I gotta say, the 8 cupholders in my corolla seriously underestimated my beverage needs. The long search for its replacement is finally over. The Ascent is a must have for any serious beverage man.

I work at the Subaru plant that assembles the Ascent - along with the Impreza, Legacy and Outback. We are currently hiring. It has 19 cup holders bc there is a motor taking space in the rear.

He doesn't really need anything else tbh. What seperates him from any other car youtuber is how in depth or in detail he is about everything. It would be nicer to have a professional camera to shoot drive by videos (which is not too often) or for general interior views/ aspects of the car but it's not really necessary for going through the infotainment or seat controls lol.

As a new father, I immediate see that the 5th cup holder on the 3rd row is designed for baby bottle. It's smaller than usual and sits in the middle. Good job Subaru. Will change from Outback into this car when (if) I have a second kid lol. Good job Doug with the review.

If this is a 'mid-size' SUV, it makes me wonder what a 'large' SUV is. I looked up the Ascent and it is 196.8 inches, which translates to just under 5 metres. I also looked up the BMW X6, which is the largest SUV I know of in Europe (it earned itself the nickname 'Chelsea tractor' in the UK) and it's a bit shorter... (4.9 metres)

Short of dense urban areas, most of America is built to support heavy duty pickups like the Ram 3500, Ford F350, and so on, making large SUVs a non issue for most situations. A car is only too big if it can't fit through a drive through.

Fun fact: the approach light in the mirrors with the Subaru logo actually illuminates the ground approaching the car, so you can see where you're going or if there is anything on the road and it's very dark outside! I actually find it quite useful!

Personally, i like the rear camera screen in the rear view mirror instead of down near the floor like every other car....it seems more intuitive, and you can turn it off to see your rear passengers. Can't remember what vehicles those were in.

@@brightlight7217along with better articulation, the groove helps guide the arm into place and keeps it there. Some people hold their shifter as they drive and rest their arm there

I have those approach lights on my 2018 Outback. They actually light up the ground in front of the door and the door handle so you can see where you're stepping and where the handle is. Great feature :)

my mom actually owned two Tribecas, an 06 and a 2011, both ran great for her even past 100k miles, the only real issues she had were tire pressure sensors going bad

The side mirror blind spot and puddle lights have been around for a few years. The approach lights are there to help you see your door handle in the dark as well as avoid puddles or something on the ground like ice etc.

10:37 Here in France EVERY MPV has sunshades for years. I mean my parents had a Citroen C8 (launched in 2002) with 4 sunshades : 2 for the middle row and 2 for the third row.

The approach lights are on my Forester and they are honestly of the most weird and unexpectedly wonderful additions to the entire car. One of those little touches you can't imagine doing without once you've gotten used to them. Parking in a dark lot or anywhere unlit is no longer a problem.... The path to you door is lit up with just hte right about of illumination - the key lock, as well as a potential puddle beneath the door. Such a nice touch. And though "X-Mode" is a goofy name and easy to make fun of.... It allowed me to go places a total of zero other cars could go here in the Seattle/PugetSound area a few weeks ago when we were destroyed by snowfall upon snowfall. It works. It disengages if you go above 25mph but while you're in it the only thing I can compare it to is a computer-aided version of driving an old Jeep in 4x-low - you feel like you could go up a tree.

If you looked at the touring model, you likely would have given it 10 for features. The touring includes cooled front seats, smart mirror with rear view camera to be able to see behind you when you have a full car, front view camera to help with parking since the hood is so long, heated steering wheel, and several other features that set it apart from the Limited.

You missed out on one of the biggest Subaru advantages... their All Wheel Drive system and Boxer engine ! Their AWD has locking/limited slip front, rear, and center differentials... with 3 wheels on ice without traction and 1 wheel with traction, power is sent to the one wheel and it will pull itself out. I’m not aware of many other family SUV’s that can do that. The boxer engine is also very smooth and compact. Since the engine sits lower in the car, center of gravity is lower, which improves safety and handling. Love Subaru!

Kyle Burdick - Actually, I owned two outback’s with CVT’s, and they were really good off road... not rock crawlers...but great in mud, snow, ice and forest roads/trails.

@@brushcreek you do realise the vast majority are open diffs, LSD was on some varients in the rear. The 'symmetrical' drive is oriented around open diffs. Hence the 3 wheels off one on.

You should have done the touring model. It has a rear view camera that you can turn on and it fills the whole rear view mirror, Incase you have the back full on luggage and can’t see out the back window. It also has a front facing camera for maneuvering in tight spaces

Agreed.. the super Sport and stupidly expensive cars are fun once in a while but normal cars is what Doug needs to do more of. I would follow up with the Explorer as a comparative.

Dough is an entertainer, not a automotive journalist and his "Score chart" proves it.

I work for a Subaru Dealer, so naturally I appreciate this review. Doug did not do X-Mode justice is my only beef.

Nice review. I’ve seen one of these at the parking garage at work and it looks nice. I guess I’m the only one that liked the old Tribeca grill. I’m patiently waiting for the Baja to return.
