    And because of that double overtime loss, LSU had to play Alabama again. You don't want to play Nick Saban twice and Les Miles was complacent. But I have some confidence that LSU would have beaten Oklahoma State since they beat either 4 or 5 of the top 10 teams in the country. And if they had done that, they would be considered the greatest team of all time. But thanks to BCS computations and the freak Oklahoma State loss, LSU went slowly but surely downhill from that loss to Alabama until they beat them last Saturday!

    Because, dumbass, lots of #2 teams in the human polls got snubbed in the final game. Kansas State snubbed and #4 Nebraska getting into the BCS championship games were jokes. OU and Nebraska got in when they didn't even win their conference. They tweaked the computer rankings nearly every year. I don't think any poll was more powerful than another: they were all equal parts.

  • @taylorplankers8970

    @taylorplankers8970

    4 жыл бұрын

    The BCS system took into account the two polls and the computer rankings to make the BCS rankings. So, all three were used to make the final BCS rankings. Bama was #2 in 2 out of 3 and OK State was #2 in 1 out of 3, so that put Bama as #2. Bama smoked LSU so it was't a bad choice to put them in. Would OK State beat LSU, we will never know.

In 2014 by barely losing to the eventual champion, in 2015 by routing #3 and beating #1, in 2016 by whooping #4 and barely losing to #2 on a pair of missed OPI calls, and in 2017 by whooping #1 and rallying to defeat #3. None of y'all would argue that OSU in 2014, MSU and Clemson in 2015, Washington and Clemson in 2016, and Clemson and Georgia in 2017 didn't deserve to be there. Alabama not only wasn't the best team in their conference, but they lost the head-to-head to LSU, the best team in the conference. Them being given a second chance was the biggest unfair advantage in sports history.

They played one less game than LSU, lost at home with two weeks to prepare, and gave up over 300 rushing yards to Georgia Southern. Nobody asked if the rematch was fair to LSU or if it was fair to deny Oklahoma State a shot at the Tigers. Bama had their shot at home and blew it with poor coaching decisions by Saban who put his kicker in a position to miss four field goals. It was all to serve ESPN's agenda to create a playoff system we didn't need.

    Oh, that's a bunch of hogwash. For one thing, Oklahoma State played a far tougher road schedule than Alabama. The Cowboys played three "true" top 25 (by Simple Rating System) teams: A&M, Texas, and Missouri. Oklahoma State beat all 3. Alabama played ZERO "true" top 25 (SRS) teams on the road. The Cowboys also showed an ability to overcome adversity and dominate; against A&M they were down 20-3 at the half but outscored the Aggies 27-9 in the second half and 2 of those points were a safety Okie State gave up willingly in the final seconds. To put that in perspective, in the last FIFTY YEARS, only 5 national champs have played a road schedule as tough or tougher than 2011 Oklahoma State. That is, only 5 national champs have played 3 or more "true" top 25 teams on the road: 1982 Penn State (lost one), 1986 Penn State, 1988 Notre Dame, 1991 Washington, and 2001 Miami. So that includes 2 teams considered among the "greatest ever" and one that lost a game. Point being that tough road schedules are no joke. They're really hard and generally proof of a very good team if the team goes through them well. Alabama had their destiny in their hands, at home against LSU, and choked. Alabama also got luck on the road; down 3-0 early against Penn State (an average team at best) they went for a fake punt in their own territory, got stuffed badly, but got a ridiculous bailout first down spot from the refs. Alabama was able to gain the momentum after that. Oklahoma State got no such luck on the road. Iowa State went 6-6 in the regular season, by the way, which is far from "horrendous." On average, and especially on the road, Alabama played a weaker schedule than Okie State but SEC homerism carried the day and gave Saban a fake national title.

    @@aaronrider4051 Lol just stop, your SEC/Alabama hatred is showing in full colors... Alabama finished the season with a top 15 SoS so stop acting like they did not play anyone. As far as the Penn St. game, I believe that Penn St. got a FG and then didn't score again until the 4th lol so saying "they were able to gain momentum after a bad ball spot" in the 1st quarter further shows your naivete. A loss to a 6-6 Iowa State team who barely beat an FCS team was much worse than by the #1 team by 3 points. SoS is not the end all be all when it comes to ranking teams. The 2011 Alabama team is regarded as one of the greatest football teams of all time especially when you look on the defensive side of the ball. It is even more impressive if you look back now and see how many of them went on to have NFL careers. Point remains the same, Ok state wins and they are in but the game that they lost was to a bad 6-6 team and that is what kept them out of the championship. 45 players from the Alabama - LSU game went on to play in the NFL (to put that in perspective only one other championship game in the history of college football has had more NFL talent on the field, the Ohio State/Miami game in 2003) so guess what? Despite your animosity towards the SEC it looks like the two best teams in college football did in fact play each other for the national championship...

  • @aaronrider4051

    @aaronrider4051

    @@Defiantllama14 Okay, first of all, using "NFL players" as a metric for grading the strength of a team is MORONIC. Otherwise we'd have to pretend a team like 2004 Penn State (loaded with great talent on defense but went 4-7) was a "great" team. Don't waste our time with that absolute crap. But, for the record, it isn't exactly like Justin Blackmon wasn't one of the finest college receivers you could ever see. Secondly, who the crap regards 2011 Alabama as one of the greatest teams ever? Not even for an iota of a second does that Alabama team belong in the same discussion as 1971 Nebraska, 1972 USC, 1991 Washington, or 2001 Miami. Thirdly, Michigan lost to Ohio State in 2006, just like Alabama lost to LSU. And that loss by Michigan was better than Florida's regular season loss. But I don't hear any of you SEC homers noticing the fact that it was wildly hypocritical to give Alabama a title shot if Michigan did not get one (note: I don't think Michigan deserved one). I also love how SEC homers trumpet SEC superiority then say things like you just said, about how SoS isn't the only thing that matters. What an absolutely idiotic thing to say. If you have two 11-1 teams, how else are you supposed to evaluate them than by how they played against their schedules? You want to keep avoiding the fact that Oklahoma State was better against a better schedule (Alabama did NOTHING as good as blowing out Oklahoma or Baylor like Okie State did). Good for you. Go waste your own time. And, finally, as for the Penn State game, if Penn State had been given the ball in Alabama territory in the spot in question, they put a lot more pressure on the Alabama offense which, with the bad call and ensuing TD, was able to play to its liking. On the road, that sort of thing is a big deal.

If we are just using ranked wins in total and not where they finished LSU beat 8 top 25 teams. 3,25,16,17,19,2,3,12 in that order. Bama beat 23,14,12,24 before playing LSU. Only one finished ranked in the final AP which was #5 Arkansas who only lost to LSU and Bama. I remember watching "the game of the century" with my family. We were all bored out of our minds. We really didn't care that it was number one vs number two, I don't care how many future NFL players this game had, and it's kind of hard to care at all when this game was ultimately pointless. Iowa State's upset of Oklahoma State essentially made the outcome of this game mean nothing. And to those of you who are probably tempted to say "go watch the Big 12 if you don't like defense," I do enjoy defense. I will never tire of seeing Jadeveon Clowney bulldoze Vincent Smith or Troy Polamalu pick-six Joe Flacco to send the Steelers to Super Bowl XLIII. But those games didn't end as 9-6 in overtime. Those games had more offense than field goals. Still, I'm glad this game happened. This was what got everybody on board that the BCS needed to go. Nobody outside of Tuscaloosa wanted to see those two teams play again. I've looked at multiple lists of the greatest games in college football history, even just of the 2010s. What do they all have in common? "The game of the century" was nowhere to be found. It makes me glad that so far, the college football playoff has almost always delivered great title games (except for OSU-Oregon in 2014). There's still a lot of kinks to be ironed out, but at least we're going in the right direction.

    The entire point of opening the playoff up to 4 teams is to try and get the best 4 teams. In 2011 Alabama and LSU were the 2 best teams by a significant margin. If there had been a playoff they would have probably played in the championship game any way. Alabama would have still been the champion in 2011 with or without a playoff!

    @Dennis Williams thank you for that. I’m an LSU fan who knows USC deserved to play way more. Although your loss was in 3OT on the road, LSU’s was very good as well. (OU’s was terrible) 8-5 Florida lost to #15,#13,#11,#8,#5. Three of those by 5 or less, one by 14 and one by 20 in the bowl game. Which is nuts bc UF was 1 score away in 3 games from having wins over top ten UGA, LSU, FSU, and Miami. I digress, OU didn’t deserve to go in 2003 and ironically y’all spanked them in 2004 when Auburn should’ve played you. I doubt auburn wins but still you get what it’s like

In our situation, if I were doing it fair, I don't know how I could put us in front of them right now." Oklahoma State's own coach said that. What changed? Both teams won out from there. Disagreed. While the atmosphere around campus was probably fairly somber for a little bit after the tragedy, it had zero bearing on them pissing away a lead to a team like Iowa State that they should have beat. I doubt a single one of them thought about the tragedy during the game, especially when things were getting close later on, seeing as the deceased were women's basketball coaches and not football coaches. They pissed away their chance to play for a NC and that's all there is to it, shit happens. Even their destruction of OU in the regular season finale was too little, too late given the opponent their loss was to compared to Alabama's. FYI, I say all this as a fan of none of the teams in this conversation - LSU, OSU, Alabama, or ISU - and by no means am I sullying the dead as what happened was indeed a tragedy, but it played zero part whatsoever in OSU losing that game, plain and simple.

Maybe it had no conscious impact, but it's extremely naive and unlikely that it had none at all.

    The only reason it was controversial is because of the pathetic rank change OKST had after losing to ISU. Usually, if you are in the top 10 and lose to a bowl-ineligible team, you drop by about 5-10 spots. OKST dropped by 2, fucking 2. The boneheaded rank change is the only reason OKST had consideration.

    @@User-wh1mh Iowa State went 7-5 which is not bad. It was a classic upset, a controversial one too. Oklahoma State should’ve been in that natty

    People also forget that Stanford, Boise St, and Houston also only had 1 loss. Then we had multiple 2 loss teams that were really good like Oregon, USC( on probation),Arkansas, Arkansas St, South Carolina, southern miss, TCU, Virginia tech, Wisconsin, and Kansas St end their regular season with only 2 losses. The more I reflect on the past seasons and the more I look at CFP today the more I realize that they should expand The CFP to 16 teams.

    This was probably the reason the playoff started. I still believe that Alabama and LSU were the top 2 teams in the country that year though. Guess a lot of the problem was that they had already played in the regular season. Kind of off topic but as a Penn State fan I think that 2008 USC got snubbed after watching them beat us the way they did in the Rose Bowl. I still can't figure out why that team was only ranked 5th. Glad we have a playoff now to sort things out a bit more.. would like to see it expanded to 8 teams though

    This should have been Lsu vs Oklahoma State. I always get annoyed when Alabama hardly drops after a loss.

    Didn’t losses from Kansas State and Baylor factor in as well? Or was that the next season?
