@@dimoned123 He had a Blog about the experience, but my aunt took it down a while after he died. They were apparently treated very well and welcoming. But they couldn't even leave the hotel's floor, without someone coming running and walking next to them. The hotel had mostly Journalists, Diplomats and economic big hats, from all over the world, who all had their own handlers. The handlers were simple people, who enjoyed being able to eat, drink and smoke western brands/goods. And so they did 24/7. They would sit all together on one side of the hotel restaurant, while the guests were on the other. He tried to roam everyday NK and was given a few opportunities to travel, with guides, even outside the Pyongyang district. But was heavily 'encouraged' to only take pictures of nice things. It was an open secret between the guests, that equipment will be searched regularly, phone calls and internet communucation recorded and the whole Hotel would be bugged. But they would never confront people who brought foreign currency. The people he worked with were very talented and dedicated in their craft, welcoming friendly, but shy to have a chat beyond work related things. Handlers would not stop nicely bragging about the superiority of their country and wouldn't believe that there's not only a small group of rich people and the rest has to struggle to eat in the West. A completely distorted image of reality. They made him do a few recommended tours to learn how the dear leaders have stopped US aggression and freed the Korean people, while their brothers in the south suffer with prostitution, drug crisis and are lapdogs of the US.

It was part of a mission trip with my church. I had a degree in sports medecine at the time and worked with some kids at a local soccer team. The country is actually more corrpt than you might think. We all often had to pay the police to look the other way for minor infractions-- I had to have my parents wire me money so I could leave- was there 2 years longer than intended because had trouble leaving because of threats/ need to pay bribes there for anything and didnt want to ask my dad for help was young and emberassed.)@@bigfenix8272 lots of absolutely fucked shit-- such as they have ""child workers battalions" not even sure if they have families-- theyd be out on the roads clearing stuff untill well past curfew for me

Educators & Humanitarians are normally selfless awesome People but those that have chosen North Korea are all this + brave Heroes. At any time the North Korean Regime can use these Humanitarians & Educators as Political pawns. At a moments notice they can be charged for crimes against the Nation, or worse Then its incarceration, including torture often without a Trial. If they do get a Trial they will be subjected to a North Korean Show Trial. I re-iterate these Humanitarians & Educators are selfless, awesome, brave & heroes.
