The 20 Best Solo Games of all Time (2022 Edition)
Ойындар
In this video I'm presenting the 20 best solo board games of all time as of 2022 (in my opinion). Note that I'm only including games I have actually played. I plan to revisit this list annually - next year, this list could include other board games in my top list.

I considered that option but then people would merely read the list instead of watching my reasons for ranking the games this way. And that would be a shame given the time and effort I put into my videos.

I love that so many of these are available on iPad: Castles of Burgundy, Everdell, Wingspan, Terraforming Mars, Onirim, Cartographers. It's a great way to try it out and I usually end up buying the physical version. Other iPad games I love to play are Sagrada, Scythe, Root, Pathfinder Adventures and Raiders of the North Sea

Love Warp's Edge, Under Falling Skies, and Cascadia. Also enjoy Skulls of Sedlec and Death Valley. Need assistance in getting Dawn of the Zeds to the table....help! (Great list, btw.)

You have good taste! 😛 Dawn of the Zeds shines most as a solo game or a two-player game. I'd suggest playing the first one or two games by yourself to get a feeling for it. It's totally worth it imho.
I love the touch of magic you added to this video using snaps and waves of your fingers and jump cuts. Your voice is engaging and pleasant, and you made me want to play more of these solo (or solo mode) games. Personally, I love Tiny Epic games solo, as well as Roll Camera.
@SirThecos

Thank you so much - I'm really happy you enjoyed this video! 🙂 Roll Camera is a game I'm really interested in, too. 👀
That's a really solid list! Some of my favourite solo games include Sprawlopolis, Coffee Roaster, Nusfjord, the Castles of Burgundy card game, Peloppones the Card Game and Railroad Ink - I tend to find myself leaning toward games with a half-hour max play time.
@SirThecos
Жыл бұрын
I completely get that! I tend to get those shorter ones to the table the most as well. But there's also some great games that play longer. Time is just a very limiting factor. 😬 I like your list as well! But I haven't played Nusfjord and Peleppones yet - what do you like most about these two games? 👀
@bearfishpie4916
Жыл бұрын
@@SirThecos Nusfjord is pretty special - it plays solo in about 20 minutes once set up, and delivers a lot of the joys of Uwe Rosenberg's other mid weight euros in that tight timeframe. It uses the brilliant solo system from a Feast for Odin whereby you play alternate turns with different coloured worker pieces, blocking off spaces for two rounds at a time each time you place a worker and forcing you to plan carefully. Peloponnes is a tableau building drafting game, where each round markers representing disasters will move forward based on the cards in the market. You have to balance building up a scoring tableau with choosing which of the disasters you think might trigger during the game, as they can hit you hard, plus need to periodically feed your population. The endgame scoring does the Knizia thing of your final score being the lower of two different metrics based on population and wealth.
@SirThecos
Жыл бұрын
Thank you for these detailed descriptions! These sound pretty good. ☺️ Would you recommend getting the two games for solo play only? Also, how's the setup time?
@bearfishpie4916
Жыл бұрын
@@SirThecos I'd say so, though I'm not sure if either is in print any more, and I'd not recommend them at inflated prices. Setup time isn't too bad for either game, especially if you make up per-player ziplock bags for the player specific components.

Awesome list. I will add warps edge to my collection. My top 3 would have to be: Robinson Crusoe, Frost Punk, and This War of Mine.
@SirThecos
Жыл бұрын
I hope you'll enjoy Warp's Edge when you get to play it! ☺️ I'm really interested in Frost Punk and This War of Mine as well. Robinson Crusoe I owned but sold at some point. It's a good game but it's really unforgiving and, unfortunately, did not lead to fun game experiences often. But I see why it's so popular!
I completely agree with Warp’s Edge. It is a game that consistently makes its way to the table. The Anomaly expansion added a few more options that were very welcomed. Wreckland Run was another game by the same creator as Warp’s Edge that I thoroughly enjoyed. Not as good as Warp’s Edge but incredibly thematic and fun! Final Girl has also made its way onto my all-time favorite solo board games. Fun video!
@SirThecos

Nice - definitely a game on my list as well. 😁
Great video - thanks. I'm new to solo playing - currently really enjoying Cascadia, Cartographers, Skulls of Sedlec (plus the Dig & Write), Sagrada (using Solo Automa by dukefanblue2005) & Trekking Through History. Based on one of your playthroughs, I've preordered For Northwood! and looking forward to giving that a go. All very lightweight, but that is where I feel most comfortable and at ease with a game. Luck plays a part in all of these games but I'm ok with that. I've seen a few different videos for Lands of Galzyr - looks like a great experience, but with such a high price tag it, I might have to revisit it in a couple of years when it comes to the second hand market. Same with Roll Player and its expansions - maybe I'll look at the digital version instead (I have the digital version of One Deck Dungeon and quite enjoy that) Thanks again & I hope you find your 'Sir Thecos' caracter in LoG soon!

Yes, I heard so many good things about the game! Alright, I'll definitely check it out in more detail! 👀
Thanks for sharing your list and for explaining your love for these games. I will definitely pick up Bullet and Warp's Edge. Personally, I can recommend the deck building game Legendary Alien Encounters if you like high tension, sitting-at-the-edge-of-your-seat games. Just make sure to play two characters. This game made me even watch the Alien movies again, as the scenarios let you replay them 😊. Oh, and do check out Flash Point if your dream job as a child was to be a fire fighter. Very intense at times but it feels so rewarding if you manage to rescue the last person out of an inferno just before the building collapses 😊

@@SirThecos It seems like a lot at first. But ultimately it isn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. I have a channel called Board Game School that has some RealmSpeak tutorials... but also a game in TTS which demonstrates how the game flow goes. If you just watch a few of these you will get a sense of the game fairly quickly, rather than reading the manual. Then once you see if it looks like something you like from watching the game play, like video 5B or the solitaire play throughs, you can dive into learning materials more. I think the 2nd vid is better than the 1st since it is more condensed and has better on screen text describing the different actions, daytime phases, etc. Also, we have a pretty helpful BGG community as well as a decently busy discord channel where we run beginner games here and there to help new people in.

Great video, great list :) Really enjoyed it. My "really personnal" point : - Roll player is amazing as you said and underestimate. Just be carefull of price you need at least one expension - You should check paper dungeon : better than cartographer as solo game but cartographer better as multiplayer (love draw ennemy on other sheet 😈) - I recommand aeon end Legacy for solo game :) - Some solo game i looooove : - mage knight : probably the best for me. Not as hard as people think to understand the rule and soooo fun and mind blowing. - marvel champion : best JCE specially solo player - Some i didn't play but probably amazing : too many bones, sleeping gods, final girls I'm gonna check bullet and lands of galzyr 😁

Roll Player is a great game for sure, especially with the first expansion - I still need to play the second one. I also really enjoy Marvel Champions. I do own Paper Dungeon but I haven't been able to get it to the table yet. New year's resolution: Play Paper Dungeon. 😅
Have you played the ranger Ron variation for parks off bgg? I like it because he is tough lol. Do you have the new maps for cartographers yet? Hmm my top three would be Calico, it's a wonderful world, warps edge. Runners up is crystallo
@SirThecos
Жыл бұрын
Your top three is very solid! Crystallo didn't really capture me, though - I sold it after having played it a few times. But I definitely see the appeal. Unfortunately, I have not played against Ranger Ron yet! I'll really have to do so soon - people keep recommending it to me! 😅👀
I figured there would be some crossovers from your "Best Games" list to this list. I've only done a few solo games over the years, mainly during the shutdown period. I have some dedicated solo games, some games that allow a person to play solitaire, and some games that have had fans make a solitaire version and post it on BoardGameGeek that I have grabbed to allow me to play those games solitaire. That being said, I have (somewhat sadly) not have the opportunity to play yet. Also, I am a bit of an "omni gamer", meaning I play war games as well as euro and american games. So my top list is rather limited. 6. Starship Troopers (the old Avalon Hill version). A fun romp in a science fiction setting 5. Star Fleet Battles . When I really want to sit in the captain's chair but cannot find an opponent. 4. A Touch of Evil . Usually, when I play solo, I play with 2 or 3 heroes to give myself a chance. 3. Sprawlopolis. A little card game with a lot of challenge. I've yet to win a game, but it plays quick enough that I don't get too frustrated. 2. Hornet Leader: Carrrier Air Operations . Reminds me a lot of Top Gun 1. Hexplore It: The Forest of Adrimon . A "land crawl" instead of a dungeon crawl, with a very interesting theme and a lot of depth of what all goes on. I have a couple others I'm really wanting to give a play, but haven't yet. Those are "Keep Up the Fire: The Boxer Rebellion", a true solitaire game, "RAF", another true solitaire game, and "Founding Fathers" (from Up and Away Games) with the expansion that allows solitaire play. One of these days....
@SirThecos

Hah! I came here to check out some new games to play solo only to see that... well I already have most of them! Woo! Everdell, Wingspan, Under Falling Skies, Warp's Edge, Cartographers, Roll Player, Parks, Cascadia ,Terraforming mars, Spirit Island. All good times. I'm new to board gaming so I'm kind of catching up on older games. At the moment my list is quite extensive. I just finished playing through the Rise of Fenris expansion for Scythe (Really fun solo!). I'm working on playing through games of Root with the clockwork expansions. And I'll be breaking out some Flamecraft again tonight, I absolutely LOVE that game solo. I will need to look into Aeon's End and Lands of Galzyr.

@@SirThecos I would have to say the tightness of it all. No time, or turn is wasted. Last two games I pulled out a win on my last chain, of my last move in the game. It can be played much faster in a solo game than the big boxed sibling, but at larger counts the time to play is comparable.

Please excuse the late reply - I thought I had answered already! 😱 But to get to your question - the language independent games in my list are: Coffee Roaster, Onirim, The Castles of Burgundy, and It's a Wonderful World. Have you tried the solo mode for A Feast for Odin?
@SirThecos

No, I have played it multiplayer but the overhead was really large for this game that I didn't feel like trying the solo mode, too. It took me 3-4 hours for my first play including setup and teardown and I found that a lot for this game's depth. It's a good game but invested time and depth didn't feel too good imho. But I might pick it up again some time and try it again. 👀

I absolutely loved playing Nemesis solo. Very hard but very rewarding if you make it. However the odds are against you and you need a lot of luck to make it. The game is very tense and will put you in impossible situations, resulting in complete despair. Very thematic and exciting, just like the movie ;) Also I've recently played Zombicide Undead or Alive solo (Mission 0, 1 & 2), and this was much more fun than expected. Playing solo you have complete control over 6 (I played only 4) characters, so you can plan very strategically. I actually think this will be more fun than playing it with my group. This War of Mine is also a great solo game (very heavy though) and last but not least Maquis 2nd edition, which is a short, lighter solo only game, but with a lot of strategical depth.

Mage Knight I played once for seven hours - it was a really interesting game but not enough to be included in this list. And I haven't played the other games yet.
So personally I think that Tiny Towns is a great solo game, with the card deck and every 3rd material is free choice. It just gives you a bit more freedom than a roll and write and with the different possible cards each game is just slightly different and always frustrating in a nice way :P

@Eikenhorst

@@SirThecos Personally I think it is a fantastic solo game. Because the puzzle is just as good solo as with a group. That is because even with a group I always prefer to play with the material cards with a free choice every 3rd round. This is because if you have each player choose their preferred material in turn, it very much results in 'groupthink' where everyone is just selecting cubes for building the same building in the same spots. Like I said, with the cards, it plays very much like a roll and write with a bit more choice and variation than normal in such games. The only thing you are missing out on is the group all screaming that they don't want any more glass and begging for stone to be turned over, and this shared frustration with the cards revealed is fun (more than other roll and write games in my opinion, you don't really care that someone gets super exited by seeing a nr 38 with a pool in Welcome To as it doesn't mean anything to you, while you very much understand why people don't want to see any more glass)

@@SirThecos TE Dungeons: I totally agree the iconography is something too much. But they did a great job... it's a lot and once you get it, it's ok! And there's a lot of games with less icons and more difficult to understand. What I think about the game is: it should be in a bigger box. I know, they have this Tiny series but... Dungeons crossed the line for what should be in a small box. The game is great but if they removed a little thing about the game (to fit in a small box) or put in a bigger box... probably will be a perfect game.

Why add time stamps, but not the actual names of the games? I’m looking up some of the games you mentioned. But I’m having trouble going back to where I left off. No disrespect meant to you. But I usually avoid channels that do not have time-stamps with names. It’s too confusing.
@SirThecos
Жыл бұрын
Well, I'd say these are two entirely different things but I do have my reasons for the way I use timestamps: I don't write the titles of the games in there because then people would just read the list and not watch my reasoning behind my choices. And that would be a shame since I invest a lot of time and effort into my videos, especially these lists. But that doesn't mean I should leave out timestamps altogether since that way, the viewers can still jump around a bit and watch the rankings they're interested in the most. I don't mind creators not putting the games' titles in the timestamps but I do have a hard time watching videos without timestamps at all.
