As a tennis player, the 2-bounce rule is the hardest pickleball rule to get used to. I have a serve-and-volley playstyle in tennis, and in tennis doubles, volleying a weak return of serve is a tried and true strategy that is ingrained in our heads. However, ever since I started pickleball, I've already violated the 2-bounce rule several times, purely out of instinct from my tennis muscle memory.

What rule do you think you’ve misunderstood the most? The 2 bounce or another one?

Hi There, I am reaallly new at pickleball and am playing singles. My question ref the 2 bounce rule is if you're serving and hit the net or out of bounds is that a fault? allowing the other playing to then serve? Also can the bounce be anywhere on the receiving sides court or does the two bounce rule have to be played to bounce on their side of the the singles court or anywhere? Thank you

Hi Karen, welcome to pickleball. In either doubles or singles the rules of play are the same. There are a couple different serving rules but only as it applies where the serve is made from and the fact that there is only one server vs two in doubles. If a serve is hit of bounds or does not pass the nvz line it's a fault on the server. In all but APP and PPA Pro division events, if the ball hits the net on serve but is in bounds and past the nvz line, it is played.

@@BetterPickleball So just to be clear if its my serve and I hit the net and it DOESN'T go over, I get to serve again? Also you didn't address that if the ball does clear the net on the opponent's side does it have to be in their half of their side of the court or anywhere on the single opponent's during the two bounce rule? Thanks again:)

@@kcz2much in both singles or double, you only get one chance to serve. If it is not in, it's a fault, and you lose the serve. The return of serve can land anywhere, same as in doubles :)

does the return have to bounce outside of the kitchen or can it bounce in the kitchen?

The return can land anywhere. Strategically, it's best to hit it deep.

So, the serve hitting the court does not count as the first bounce?

  • @BetterPickleball

Yes it counts. The ball needs to bounce once on the returners side and once on the servers side.

The wording on the rules is confusing since they initially state.. “Two-Bounce Rule. After the ball is served, each side must make one groundstroke prior to volleying the ball.” it sounds that the serve doesn’t count as a bounce because they say after the serve
