Great video! I’m a new player and your videos have helped me so much. The folks I play with have been so supportive and helpful, but many of them play from near the baseline. I feel like although they are better players, in a sense I have more knowledge about the game than some of them…It feels empowering. Thanks, CJ and Tony!

That's my favorite too Tony. We need to be kind to ourselves! Thanks for shooting this with me! Someday I'm going to string together our blooper reel. We made a few doozies!

With lots of practice and games with so many different players, I am finally getting confidence and making good hits on the pickleball. I recently discovered by asking the folks I play with how they learned the game. The consensus was they learned from each other. None of them seem to know about dinking, getting up to the NVZ, returns, third shot drops, etc. But most seem to love sending that ball speeding down the middle. And then the games end in short order. The guys love to do this shot. I try to slow the game by hitting the ball softer, but it doesn't work for long. Kind of frustrating to me.

Hey Joyce, I think your situation is fairly common especially since players have tended to play in smaller groups or pods since the pandemic. My guess is that as these players start playing (and losing) against players who have the ability to control the ball they'll change their tactics. In the meantime, keep trying other options so you continue to grow as a player. We have a great podcast about learning from our losses open.spotify.com/episode/4DjtOzuZCnV80D6ViCjGsR?si=qFDsxoPIRTimNLQdAxTang

The "nonviolent" zone!😜 At 5:30 in the closed captioning. You might want to watch the video and see what the cc says that you are saying. There are lots of mistakes - football for pickleball, nonviolence for nonvolly zone, nonbally for nonvolly, nbc for nvz among others.

we hear that at the end of the year, there may be a change in rules to not allow bouncing the ball before the serve. Will that apply to those not in competition?

Know what I think is the number 1 mistake beginning pickleball players make that is very easily fixed? Not reading and learning the rules. If people would learn the rules they’d already know that you don’t have to wait for the ball to bounce before you can step into the kitchen.

  • @BetterPickleball

The rule book is the answer. But as in most sports, new players usually rely on others to help them understand the rules of the game, until they find out if they like the game or not.

@@BetterPickleball and they’re learning from others who haven’t cracked the rule book either. My sister and I regularly encounter people who think being inside the baseline when serving is fine, or they will be behind the baseline but not between the center and sideline. I have seen people try to straddle the center line or be beside the sideline inside of the baseline, insisting that they’re not on the colored part of the court so it’s legal. And they have been playing for over a year yet never knew that was not legal. Those are just a couple of the serving issues regularly encountered. Some people who have been playing years don’t understand the rules about the kitchen. Or the other day another player told me my serve was illegal because I dropped the ball out of my hand and then hit it. She insisted that the ball had to bounce before I could hit it. Not knowing the rules can be a major issue.

The rec group I play in are mostly "bangers" not soft game at all or minimal. Is it inappropriate to ask ( especially in a rec mixed group ( all levels) to ask at the beginning for people to try including a soft game ( dinking?). Not sure how to develop that skill if it is just banging the ball back and forth . I think that dinking is the fun part of the game but seem to be in the minority

  • @BetterPickleball

That's a pretty common situation. One of the things you could do is suggest a dink game as a warm up. It's fun and it will help your soft game. kzread.info/dash/bejne/qJWfy6x8ebG8Zto.html
