That's what I really hate, intro's to 'important' lectures. Everyone knows who they've come to see and doesn't need anyone to tell them anything about the lecturer. They just can't help themselves. "Welcome all, Carl Sagan!" Would have been quite enough. :)

Does anyone else suddenly realise they've been smiling whenever Carl Sagan is talking? Despite the sadness of knowing that he'd be gone three years later, and that he probably knew it himself at this time, I still found myself smiling the whole way through this ... What a human!

I am also from Nepal and Sagan became an inspiration, when I was in my eighth grade, I got to listen to him for the first time. Now, I am an undergrad student of physics at the Central Campus of Technology. And after my graduation, I want to bring changes in my country Nepal, as Sagan tried to bring in the USA.

Sadly missed, Sagan must certainly be one of the greatest presenters of ideas ever. a brilliant mind gone to soon.

Wow... this man was so amazing. I never seen more comments about a person who's past, be full of admiration, respect, love, and longing. Everyone brings up the fact that he's dead but do so in their own unique way. Its absolutely beautiful.. Carl Sagan would be filled with such delight if knew now how much people in the world still cared about his vision.

Crazy to think that - if Carl Sagan were alive today - he would be 84. Well into his mid eighties. And even at such an old age, I wonder what kinds of contributions to science he would make, if at all. Moreover, I wonder what kind of impact he would have on our world and our planet.

My dad kinda knew Sagan. He worked as a photographer on the set of Cosmos, just taking behind-the-scenes shots of Sagan, the crew, the sets. There's a really nice shot of my dad and Sagan talking. My dad tells me that even after he became very famous he was still very friendly and would talk to anyone. He's got a couple Sagan stories, nothing very interesting, they weren't close or anything. But the way my dad describes him, he was a very nice man.

to hisvorpalsword, you must be very proud, these moments are the moments that make you smile after thinking about them, also, I could just imagine seeing a big undated black & white photograph of Carl Sagan with a smile on his face talking with another person heads slightly tilted, both talking, well really at this point The photo marks a most profound historical event, & I am not sure if your Father is still alive or not, but if I was you, I would find that photo, get it processed & enlarged as big as poster size, & put it up in the lounge room with a lovely framed background, think about this, you do this "& maybe within your lifetime we finally make contact, at least on the mainstream aspect, I don't presume to think it hasn't happened, but that in the big picture the period of the moment scince that photo taken, until the moment our species finds out that we have a much larger cosmic family, well the moment of the photo until the moment of confirmation of other life is like a time wise galactic nano second, because the relavence of that photo time wise until we observe fruits of our labour in terms of a young space faring planet, is currently still very relevant even if the photograph is like a classic black & white 1960's photo.

Sagan, although he regretted it later and defended him, was front and center in silencing and censoring Immanuel Velikovsky and in forcing the publisher to drop Velikovsky as a client despite having been no#1 on the the bestsellers list for 11 straight weeks, something that had not happened before or since and opposite to the values he preached. To add insult to injury it was alleged that Velikovsky was pushing pseudoscience even though much of what he was proposing was self admitted speculation. Velikovsky has since been validated on the radio signals from Jupiter, The magnetized nature of moon rocks, the atmospheric composition and temperature of Venus, The electrical nature of Saturn and dozens of other points used to motivate his speculation. Sagan admitted the treatment of Velikovsky was wrong in his Cosmos series but stopped short of issuing an apology. He also clearly made the statement carrying bitterness from his consistent defeat at the hands of Velikovsky in 1 to 1 debates and couldn't resist getting in a couple of barbed comments, it was observed by many at the time that the only time they saw Sagan flusted was during his discussions with Velikovsky. That is not an excuse by the values of science that Sagan promotes so eloquently. I say this as a fan of Contact and SETI but not as a fan of burying those who disagree with you when they should be held in the very highest echelons of science for their remarkable intuitive grasp of scientific thinking personally and individually overturning thinking in 46 different scientific disciplines.

To make a comparison such as that, holds next to no merit. Both men reached their pinnacle in completely different worlds. In the most fundamental sense. Being a visionary is a rare trait these days, so for Musk and Sagan to stay true on their vision is something I greatly respect. It's something all others should strive for

I've just recently discovered Carl Sagan, fell in love with his legacy, and found out that he died. I'm listening this with awe and grief, and can't reconcile that he is no more among us. I can imagine how disappointed he would have been if he had known what happened during these 30 years: Trump, Amazon forest on fire, a very little progress in greenhouse gases pollution, hunger, devalvation of education, nuclear threat is still real...😥

Not many people know about him anymore. I first read Cosmos back in the 90's when I was in high school. It was an eye opener and it encouraged me to delve into science. I was very sad when he died back in 1996.

i love how easily he shows our species to be silly and infantile despite our glorious miraculous achievements. : )

A thought occurred to me as Mr Sagan was describing all the greenhouse gases we are adding to this planet. The aliens might believe that we are not indigenous to this planet but are terraforming it.

The man is genius. The first book I ever read was from him about our solar system. He would turn in his grave if we told him today there are still millions of people who insist the earth is flat! I know how that hurts a living human, but it does not hurt him any longer. I tend to say things as they are - which brings me often in trouble. The truth is troubling and I see Carl's frustration about ignorance between the lines of his speeches. RIP CARL SAGAN.

Yes, I cried when I learned of his passing. …and my favorite quote from the original Cosmos series was when Dr. Sagan said, “In the deepest sense, the search for extraterrestrial life is the search for who we are.”

2:03:33, without even realizing it, he said that the world needed to unite against a pandemic 27 years before they had to. He really did think ahead.

20:30 lmao Carl was actually very funny, I love the emphasis he puts on BOONdocks. It makes me laugh every time I watch this lecture, which I come back to regularly. RIP Carl we miss you, there will never be another quite like you. I enjoy Neil DeGrasse Tyson a whole lot, and he I believe he is the best from our era and does a fantastic job in his own way. But Carl was a very special individual and I still stand by my original statement. I also really enjoy the work done by Brian Cox as an honorable mention, the man is constantly smiling and you can tell how much he enjoys his work and bringing knowledge to people that otherwise might not learn about it

Indeed. And nobody was saying much of anything relating to our existence that wasn't first vindicated by Mr. Sagan. To watch Cosmos in real time when it was first aired was a wonderfully fresh and enlightening program of which I always watched wihout fail. It eventually went on to become a timeless and engaging way to look at life on Earth and in turn, our place in the immense distances and power of our solar system. I'd like to believe Carl is where he wanted to be long before his heartbreaking passing.

@@AALavdas wholly agree. I first read the COSMOS when I was just 11yrs old, and watched the series which aired in the UK on BBC2. It changed my whole outlook on life. One of many I have found though out my life. Dr Sagan is greatly missed. His ideas of introducing young kids to the universe with the message be what you can be, your imagination is the future. I always remember a story he told, he went as a kid to his local library and asked the librarian could he have a book on Stars, the lady librarian returned saying here you go kid! it was a book about the Hollywood stars of the era. He politely said no a book about the Sun you know stars. Just goes to show how dumb we treat Children. Sagan a true genius of our time, I hope in the future he goes down in history with the greats.

The sudden ending is our full teaching moment. And we have to ponder, if he was alive today - so much is in this lecture, imagine what he would be saying today. Maybe our fate is to end quickly....after a civilization festooned with billions of brilliant cosmological discoveries.

It's interesting how much of this lecture is also featured in Sagan's book Pale Blue Dot (e.g, the segment about cars being Earth's dominant organisms)

Lighting and sound crews dropped a bollock on this lecture. Still, great to hear Carl in the last years of his life :)

Death is a very sad thing but the truth is better

If anybody deserves to be part of the cosmos, it's def Mr. Sagan my hero!! The human race still doesn't get it, sad~

The very fact that none of the Indians even in 19th century have mentioned any surprise to new developments in scientific astronomical discoveries unlike others tells that these concepts though unclear were a part of Indian Astronomy.

I really wish that Carl could have been here to see the JWST and its incredible discoveries and to tell us what they mean.

I am so happy I can even comment this time whilst mankind remembers him. Remember what he said.

Carl was wonderful communicator his talk got us to consider the paradox of our so called intelligence. Carl was way ahead of his time. CO2 levels in 1993 320ppm now in 2021 they’re at 415ppm gone up by 100ppm in 26 years. With no reduction what’s so ever in emissions! . 100/26 = 3.8 pa. in another 30 years if we keep pumping it up at current rates will be 515ppm. God help us? By then I’ll be 100 if I’m still alive?

When I heard My understanding of spiritual dimensions explained by carl with the 2-D 3-d example it changed my faith forever. He was trying to explain it relative to anti logic perspective but it definitely was founded in logic and reasoning originally and is one the coolest plagiarized examples of which he left many for us to teach by.

Carl Sagan is obviously a genius, no point talking about that Can we discuss how a world-leading university got a guy who can't publicly speak to introduce CS? They don't have a PR department?

The late, great Carl Sagan is the Mr.Rogers of the science community. RIP to the astro-g.o.a.t.
