    The quick shifter on my 1250gs was jerky when I first got it but now its smooth as butter. Also you want to be accelerating when you are shifting up and completely off the throttle when shifting down, otherwise its more likely to be herky jerky.

    Great review.Thank you. I liked a lot also the descriptions of the 1250 Gs and 1290 SAS. Having ridden them myself, your words entirely matched my thoughts and memories of them. The downhill control - dont know how it feels on the bike, but i`ve used it several times on a rental X3 in an insanely steep mountain area and I cannot describe how incredibly good and useful that option felt (you can even adjust the downward speed). All in all, thank you for a great video opinion !

    Top review Sam. You’ve got me interested to try the 1300GS. After having both 1250GS and 1290SA, I concur with everything you said about these bikes, and agree that the 1290SA is preferable for the reasons you spoke about. I’ll be test riding the 1300GS as soon as they arrive in Australia.

After a k1200r, f800gs, r1200gsa (which were after lots of rides on my dad's r80rs, k1200lt,r1200rt's, you get it; BMW all over), I had a 1090R and a 1290SAS for 6 years, but now awaiting my r1300gs. Throphy version in white. Imo perfect between the somewhat boring 1200gsa and the hooliganesk 1290sas.

    Great video! When the 1300 came out, I had just purchased my 23 KTM SAS and was like…’oh no..what have I done?” I say that because I really liked the 1250 when I did an extended test ride one day. But that same day, I rode the KTM and was sold instantly by its performance and the feel of it. However, I also said that if BMW makes improvements to that 1250, it just might make me think twice. I have not had the chance to ride a 1300 yet, but your impression of it does feel logical and about what I expected.

    The only thing carried over from the 1250 is the layout: a flat twin. The rest is all new. It’s still the same weight as the 1200 so only took off what the 1250 added. My GSA was pretty nimble despite its bulk but I’ve never ridden a 1290 to compare it. I liked the telelever front end. I went to an ATAS ES DCT from the GSA and it felt horribly vague. My 890 Adventure feels better than either. That said, the 1300 looks intriguing……

I ride in the sun, rain, and snow. On 6 lane highways at 150 km/h and on fire roads with rocks the size of baseballs. Here in the Pacific Northwest of Canada. However I am 67. Good that they've improved the Telelever front end so much, that was a huge criticism of mine on the old bike too. Shame it's still a Boxer engine though, as the dull engine drone that sent me to sleep was the other primary issue with the previous bike which they've not changed, even if it is usefully more potent! I'm gonna start calling you out now on your IAM denigration now though Sam... We've chatted about this topic before. 20-30yrs ago your criticisms might have been fair, and I know there are still some fuddy duddies that would hand themselves in to the nearest cop shop if they exceeded the speed limit by a single mph, but that's not the case any more... There was more KTM 1290's in our group last year than there was GS's Sam, and precisely cos they're more fun, more engaging to ride! 😁 I joined IAM to further my skills, ride with better people and learn more from them... You've seen I don't hang about (I was hanging back a lot on the ride out last March cos I didn't want to lose you all), and I am as critical of the POLITE vest wearing nobs as much as you are! So yeah... Bruce can clearly ride a bike (and he's learnt from ex Police riders himself I understand, I am going on his Chickenstrips Tour to Scotland in August so will find out first hand!)... Give it a go mate! Get signed up to IAM... You can't knock it if you haven't tried it! 😉

    Haha yes I know pal! Little bit of light hearted banter aimed at those polite vest brigadiers! Not at the IAM course itself. The riding style and approach to everything is definitely a better way of looking at how we ride and I've never come across a slow IAM qualified rider. Those jokes are just for the guys that spend more time criticising people online than they do riding their bikes haha. The 'Nigels' who spend their time constantly berating everyone else's riding because they have a further qualification! I know that's not you mate!

    You can just put it into Dynamic Pro and then adjust the wheelie level between 2 levels, and the ‘old’ GS did that too. I think I most;t agree about the excitement factor. I put a stage 2 kit on my 1250 and it can rip it in the twisties, even with knobbies on, but it’s not as exciting as some bikes. I use mine mainly for multi day trips where there is ~50% off-pavement, and was thinking of selling my ZX14r for a 1290 GT for on-pavement only touring, because I enjoy sporty riding and touring with some moderately hard off-road.

    Hi Sam, great vid mate, very objective. Question for you: when I blew up my old SDGT I took out a 1250 GS and every time I came to a stop anywhere I ended up ruining my shins on the cylinder heads (one more than the other because they're offset which really messes with my OCD and thoroughly annoys GS owners that hadn't realised or noticed) like literally every time. I mentioned it to the dealer he said "yeah you get used to it". Did you notice it on the 1300 at all? Hope you're well 👍

Other then the price I don’t see the point on illuminating switch gear, only my main bike has it and it makes no difference to me, should need to look at controls when riding, just a distraction

  • @SamVBikes

    Thanks! Yeah always knew it would be a great bike, wasn't expecting it to be as nimble as it was though! The back-lit switch gear definitely isnt a deal breaker by any means, it's just a nice thing to have when you do many hours riding in the dark. For me, it makes it more of a quick glance at the buttons rather than a longer one trying to see which button you're pressing. Especially with those bulky winter gloves!

    Thanks mate! Seating position just felt like a standard GS. It did have the bench seat so slightly more uncomfortable that I assume a stock seat would be but it was easily a place I could sit for a few hours. KTM was slightly more upright but that may have been my style of riding the GS. Bit supermoto. KTM feels like it has wider bars and more leverage. Both bikes are easily 2 hours in the saddle comfy. KTM is marginally better but I have the ergo seat on my SAS so not fair to compare a Rally seat to a comfort seat! Either way you will love them. If you're used to a KTM and want that more aggressive ride, the KTM would take your money

    Nice review Sam I love the GS but don’t think I’ll be splashing out on a new 1300 good as it is. Watch those wheelies on video not saying as a oh you shouldn’t be doing that. 44 teeth video last year with the motorcycle specialist barrister said it’s 99% of cases are classed as dangerous driving not careless wit a certain ban and big fine. He said even being seen just lifting the front wheel a little would attract this charge.

    Thanks bud! Haha yeah I did think about that. The camera makes it look way higher, and even suspension travel can look like a wheelie too. Appreciate the thought 💪🏼

    Hi Sam I totally get the hooliganism element , I personally like bikes that are a beast , a bike can be to good it’s almost boring , I currently own a couple of diavels , rocket 3 . I sold a h2 Kawasaki because it was dull , don’t get me wrong I did 23,000 mile on it , it just lacked something ,yeah it was rapid , almost like having a stunning girlfriend that your mates fancy , but only you know she’s rubbish at bedroom activities , luckily I’ve monkeybikes , groms and benellis if I want have a riot on the road , stick to ktm and don’t ever sell your monkeybike 🏍🏍👍👍

    Haha I nearly spat out my coffee laughing at the stunning girlfriend's bedroom skills! You're 1000% right mate. You can have the fastest, most expensive bike of them all but if it isn't putting a smile on your face, whats the point! Also that monkey isnt going anywhere!!

    @@SamVBikes I am watching your video now. I get what you are saying about your bike wanting to fly and the 1250 is a steady comfortable bike. I think if I had your KTM I would get a few speeding fines because I do love to fly. I remember thinking this on my triple black that it was sensible for my nature. :).

  • @SamVBikes

    @SamVBikes

    Haha yes the KTM is very tempting with the speed.. although I found myself way less sensible on the S1000XR weirdly. All the power was over 7k rpm which was already in illegal speeds!

    I like the look of the new BMW V-Strom 1300GS. But why is it not at V-Strom prices...? More like a Bentley GS1300 for what they are charging....

  • @SamVBikes

    @SamVBikes

    Yeah it's definitely a big chunk of change. It's got quite a bit more tech than the Vstrom but there's definitely a BMW tax/premium bike tax! Mind you... nowhere near as much as Ducati tax!

    Having had a VStrom 1050 XT, and now the owner of a 1250GSA Rallye, I can tell you that the GSA is twice the bike in every department over the Strom. That’s why it costs what it does.

    Look 'n' feel = subjective, but too many bike visual-designs look plonky. Surely not too hard. We're left having to talk ourselves into buying or rely entirely on handling characteristics to sell it. Men typically like the look of things first and the feel next! #men #plonky #look #feel #hard #controversial
