The 130-millimeter Gun Built to Rule the Pacific

Ғылым және технология

China has unveiled its latest naval achievement-the Type 055 Renhai-class cruiser. This is no ordinary vessel; it's a 13,000-ton guided-missile destroyer armed to the teeth with 112 vertical launching system missile tubes. Its floating arsenal can simultaneously launch surface-to-air, anti-ship, and land-attack cruise missiles.
This cruiser doesn't just challenge the status quo; it directly rivals the U.S. Navy's Ticonderoga-class cruiser, a mainstay of American naval dominance. With a lethal 130-millimeter main gun and a 30-millimeter CIWS system designed to swat low-flying aircraft and missiles out of the sky, the Renhai is more than just a ship; it's a statement of intent.
As if its mere existence wasn't enough to send ripples across the Pacific, the Renhai-class cruiser is part of China's broader strategy to assert its naval dominance locally and globally. With eight of these cruisers already commissioned and plans for at least 25 more by the end of the decade, Taiwan faces the growing shadow of China’s military ambitions. The message is clear: China is gearing up for something big.

    Funny how one 130mm gun supposedly will rule the Pacific. The Baltimore class cruisers built 80 years ago are during WW2 had 9 200mm guns and 12 125mm guns as secondary argument. Obviously the 112 VLS tubes are the main difference.

    The modern naval guns are automatic, and have a higher rate of fire and longer range and greater accuracy, putting an equal number of rounds on target to about 12 of the older guns.

    055 VLS is cold hot launch means missiles can ignite inside like US or press into air then ignite like Russia, and it holds missile up to 9 meter long, bigger than US MK41 VLS, it’s the only type can house ballistic missile currently. The radar is dual active array vs. US mostly old single array radar. The 1130 CWIS can fire over 10 thousand rounds per minute. Make fun of it or not, this is a very powerful war ship. China just launched the number 9 new version of this ship and with more to come. Be interested to see you review their new 6000 ton 054B frigate.

Stealing all of the peasants money in their own country is killing unity in one’s own country. Have you tested your power meter lately to see if it’s not stealing from you? China will be free soon, and the CCP is doing as much as they can to make this so. We will see in the next elections in China. Oh wait, nope!

A lot of the fuel was stolen and sold on the black market. Some of it was due to corruption, but also because the troops have not been given food or supplies. These vessels are important but represent a fairly limited capability to control sea space unless part of a carrier group in which its role becomes defensive of the carrier which is able to control a huge amount of air and sea space. China has two operating carriers, fairly old Russian tech and lightly armed with small limited capability air groups. The type 3 carriers are critical as they start to approach closer to the existing US Nimitz or Ford class carriers. However, China still lacks both aircraft and trained personnel to deploy a fully operational carrier wing as well as lack of operational experience, which the US has 60 years or more of experience in. None of these carriers are nuclear so needing replenishment. This leaves China with some likely very capable pieces but still lacking clear combined arms capabilities and experience to make them work.

    @@midtownmariner5250 Indeed, they would be formidable against peer adversaries but against a carrier group with combined arms capability of sea, air and subsurface they would not last long. This is why China has spent so much effort technically and propaganda wise on its “carrier killer” missiles as well as seeking true carrier capability of their own. We know their subs are at least a decade behind, their carriers are very limited and the journey to carrier capability will be long and expensive, likely decades or more and the US continues to evolve things like the longer range anti-ship missiles, the ability to launch these in air dropped pods from cargo planes, stealth fighters, 5th and now 6th generation along with drones that can be both aerial refueling platforms and stealth missile launch platforms as well as stealth bombers like the B2 and now the B21. Then the latest development is the autonomous subs that can position smart mines, first was handed to the navy last year. The US strategy is similar to what Regan did to the Soviets, keeping moving the technology needle to make the Chinese constantly spend on catch up. This is completely aligned with Trump starting the chip technology denial and problems China has in LLM (Large Language Module AI). US Air-force has demonstrated that it can already have AI fly F16 missions, You can guess that Block 4 F35’s and Gen 6 fighters will all have AI embedded as will the drones being developed.

    The first 2 Chinese carriers are Russian hulls only with modern chinese techs, not old Russian tech. The russian techs weren't installed to begin with. Second, if these chinese war ships bar none can only be countered by sending a huge ass US carrier groups 3000 miles from its own shores at tremendous cost to the tax payers, then it's mission accomplished. Do you then realize how difficult going forward it is for US to maintain supremacy over Chinese shores facing its land, sea, air and missile combined arms capabilities? In this environment where China's A2AD renders US carriers out of action, the Chines big guns will indeed rein supreme as it should be with any big country in its own sphere of influence.

  • @rogerkant3696

    @rogerkant3696

    4 ай бұрын

    @@TelpPov One is a Russian hull, the other is a locally made copy of the first. Both are ski jump designs and carry J15’s (SU-33 copies). The arrestor gear is a Russian design that China purchased. The J15’s cannot carry a full fuel or munitions load from the carriers due to the ski jump and the stress it places on the airframe. These carriers served the purpose of developing basic carrier skills and tactics, don’t think China ever considered fighting a war with them. The Fujian, type 03 is also a transition ship. It moves from ski jump to catapult but remains conventional powered. The catapults are now EMAL’s but it is not clear if this is operational yet as it is rumored it was a leadership decision to jump to EMAL’s by Xi despite China having some access to steam catapults from the scrapping of the Australian carrier in 1985. The real capability is type 04, not even laid down. This will feature nuclear propulsion as well as EMAL’s. By that time China may have a decent designed for carrier aircraft with stealth as well as a convincing load out and numbers. Importantly, 03 will also see the local P2 airborne radar capability on board for enhanced sensor capability and battle management. In short, China is unlikely to have full force projection carrier capability till the 2040’s. Keep in mind that the US has been at this game since the 2030’s along with the Brits who pioneered this. This is the most complicated piece of military tech on the planet. The overriding issue is economic, can China sustain its military spending and develop the associated technology to truly make the superpower navy club. The peaking of the economy does not bode well for China and China still lags significantly in chip technology which only becomes more critical. The remaining question is more fundamental, will carriers remain the ultimate tool of strategic and tactical military force projection in the coming AI age? Look at the new xtra large unmanned submersible that Boeing just delivered to the navy. The risks for carriers continue to accelerate and China needs 20 years or more to get to where the US is now on the basic capabilities of operating a modern carrier. By the time they arrive it may all have changed.

That was a big factor on why the bombardment of Iwo Jima didn't last as long as was requested since that would cause a lot of a lot of ships to prematurely head back for barrel replacement. When was the last time they had those guns changed on the Iowas? Are there even any spare guns left when the guns inevitably wear out?
