All four of the synoptic gospels give us the names of Jesus’s inner circle of disciples. Some of them are better known than others, do you know the names of Jesus’s apostles? Here is the complete list:
Peter, also known as Simon, Simon Peter, and Cephas, Peter was a fisherman by trade.
James son of Zebedee (also known as James the Greater). James was also a fisherman before Jesus called him.
John son of Zebedee (not to be confused with John the Baptist) . Brother of James. John was a fisherman.
Andrew was Simon Peter’s brother. Like his brother, he was a fisherman.
Philip is only mentioned eight times in the New Testament and is described as a disciple from the city of Bethsaida.
Bartholomew also referred to as Nathanael.
Matthew, also known as Levi, was a tax collector.
Thomas, perhaps better-known as “Doubting Thomas,” famously doubted the resurrection of Jesus.
James son of Alphaeus is only mentioned in the four lists of apostles. He is also known as “the minor”, “the little”, “James the lesser”, or “the younger”, according to translation.
Jude the apostle is also known as Jude of James, Judas of James, Thaddeus, Judas Thaddeus, and Lebbaeus.
Simon the Zealot is only mentioned by name in lists of the apostles So we know almost nothing about him.
Matthias wasn’t one of the original members of the Twelve. He was appointed by the apostles to replace Judas Iscariot.
Paul was appointed by Jesus himself on the road to Damascus.
What all of them have in common? They all were ordinary people, just like you and I.
