The $100 Million Process of De-Aging Harrison Ford

Ойын-сауық

You may think you know how Lucasfilm de-aged Harrison Ford for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, but the truth may surprise you.
In this video, I'll break down exactly how Harrison Ford was de-aged through "deep fake" technology, bringing the total budget for Indiana Jones 5 to almost $300 million. I'll also explain what deep fake is, and how it's being used in Hollywood today by companies like Metaphysic.ai.

    I think I’d be more okay with it if they signed some sort of contract before they died permitting studios to use their likeness in the future

    It's only fine if 1. They signed off or 2. It's only a one time thing. Case I point, Harold Ramis's send off in Afterlife or Paul Walker's in Fast 7. It's meant to finish a story, and as long as it ain't used again after that, I'm fine.

    I think it's okay if done to bring back a character in a prequel or a flashback scene. Should be done sparringly though - essentially what they did in Rogue One (although the technology was not yet perfected back then). What should not be done (but no one wants it anyways) is inventing completely new characters "played" by dead actors.

    My jaw dropped. I hadn't seen this Ford in a LONG time. He was 45 years old again - he was the Harrison Ford of The Last Crusade who rode off into the sunset, except now, a few years later, a WW2 spy. As Indy would have been. Great opening to a great film.

    I disagree. The low point of Indi 5 for me is the first action scene, when he face looks weird most of the time. I like the approach of him being old and tired, I think they find the right tone for this movie. I have no problem with a strong “female character” or convenient plots, because old Indi movies had that too and they are great anyway.

    My understanding was that it wasn't just deepfake. They used a lot of stock footage they had of Harrison Ford. So i think it was a combination. There were some shots looked like remastered footage, until he spoke. There were a couple of times that it looked a bit unnatural, but overall, i was impressed with the blended technology.

  • @panathentic

    @panathentic

    4 ай бұрын

    Here's some clarification. GOOD deepfakes need hours of the highest quality footage to train off of to get a face looking realistic, as it absolutely had to for this film. Instead of just training the model off of Indiana Jones 1 2 and 3, they also used any existing footage of Harrison Ford form the same time frame, including deleted scenes, outtakes, alternative takes, bloopers, other projects such as starwars, and stock photographs of him from that time. they fed ALL of this information into the Deep Learning algorithm so that it would have solid reference for almost any lighting, any expression, and any angle of his face. This is how the stock footage was used.

  • @stormbowman7148
    @stormbowman7148 Жыл бұрын

    I see deep fakes as a tool that, when used appropriately, can do a lot of good for a movie. Just like all the other tools in the box, mostly CGI, which can be used to enhance a movie - or completely destroy it if over used. I think it worked well in Indy 5.

  • @kthx1138
    @kthx1138 Жыл бұрын

    I'm all for it and I think the technology would've worked better for resurrecting Peter Cushing and Carrie Fisher in Rogue One, if the CGI artists used this approach, mining actual footage of the actors, instead of trying to recreate their likenesses from scratch.

    The de-aging effect looks okay & believable on the most part. But as someone who grew up with Harrison Ford movies, I noticed that his voice got deeper as he aged. And they didn't do anything to his voice. So it's kinda funny to see the old man voice coming out from the young Ford., it's like watching a lipsync.

    I think Hollywood should looking into deals licensing the face of characters for future use without them. It could be lucrative for actors, as it could generate income each time their likeness is used in the future (without them even having to work) and could even be written into contracts as willable to their children.

    Honestly, I have a bigger problem with NOT de-aging actors' characters, because the older look is incongruent with the time of the story being told. Let's also consider that CGI "still" has a long way to go. The lions in the upcoming "Kraven The Hunter", clearly look like CGI fakes, and this film is being made with a massive budget. So, I applaud any de-aging of humans that looks better than the false-looking CGI animals that we often see.

    CGI quality has been declining because some pieces are rushed into production. Have you ever seen the CGI from Pirates of The Caribbean? Now compare their CGI to recent installments from 2023 like The Flash or some Marvel movie. The difference is so noticeable, with the recent CGI looking like it came from the 90s instead of actually looking advance. There are some notable exceptions like the Godzilla vs. King Kong but for me, a movie that came from the 2007s looks superior over than the current 2023 movies. Any movies that came from 2005 - 2011 are bound to have superior looking CGI.

  • @phil4986
    @phil4986 Жыл бұрын

    They could deepfake his face but not his voice? That was a huge mistake. Deep faking voice is extremely cheap. The number one complaint I heard was his old voice did not match his young face. But I also heard the face swap as sloppy. What this points to is the problem when you upscale a computer image that was modded on a computer monitor, to a huge movie screen. On the movie screen you see absolutely every flaw. This is why the old movies are so special. Where all the colors and exposures were perfect. All of the images were perfectly managed because that was all done in excruciating detail real time on site when the movie was shot. That level of perfection is what was actually captured on film. Not manipulated into the film after it was shot. I have heard several people say it would have made so much more sense to find a young actor to play a young Indiana Jones. Some new talent that could have given the franchise another forty years of life. Not a gender swap social warrior. A real adventurer with a moral compass and pathos and appreciation for the people around him. I would like to see one more Indiana Jones movie with Steven Spielberg directing it and Kathleen Kennedy nowhere around the entire country it was shot in. And the young actor could hold his own and maybe old Indy could do a cameo. It would actually make a funny scene where the young actor looked in a mirror under the influence of some South American tribal mushroom drink and saw the real Harrison Ford looking back at him. And Old Harrison Ford scolding him for being so lazy and letting the bad guys get the best of him (up until then). I think this movie could have saved 100 million dollars and made THREE billion dollars by just giving other actors a chance to shine and especially by writing a script that actually loved the Indiana Jones legacy and characters. This was a terribly missed opportunity to do it right one last time. More CGI is never the answer to poor filmmaking.

Definitely the technology has come a log way, but still not quite there yet.

    Yeah, no...his voice did not sound at all like they de-aged it. It sounds like an 80 year old man with a 40-something's face and body. In fact, I highly doubt they did _anything_ for it. Mark Hammil in Season 2 of the Mandalorin is an example of how to correctly de-age someone's voice: you have the actor say the line, then use AI to dub over their voice using samples taken from audio recordings of them during younger stages of their career.

    Hiring a "younger version of an actor" would require genetic engineering and cloning. I don't think we are quite there yet. 😂

    Question - if it's so damned expensive to do, how come sole individuals can do it so well on a shoestring. I'm sure ILM added bells and whistles, but still... Also I respect there's more screentime rather than a 30 second clip, but...

    Agree. It's really good all the hate channels are lying and misrepesenting the film as something it isn't. Glad I have a mind of my own and actuially watch something before critizising it.

    @@themobseat What the hell are you talking about? He LEADS THE FILM HANDS DOWN! He has the most dialogue. The most scenes. The most action. He is 100% the reason to see the movie. You are just out and out lying. The film is excellent. Too bad you let others decide what is good for you. Its truly pathetic how ridiculous what you wrote is. Unreal.

    How could it be disrespectful to Harrison Fords legacy? People don't think he knows that they're de-aging him in a movie he stars in? What's disrespectful is that they keep making these bloody movies for all the wrong reasons and ruining yet another franchise in the process. Who asked for another Indiana Jones after the 3rd except Harrison Ford? I liked him better when he used to have integrity and turned down projects. But at some point in his career he said "screw it" and made more Indy films, Star Wars and was even in Expendables 3... His legacy was tarnished long before they deep faked his face.
