Yeah... LoTR, The Shining and Mad Max FR are cinematic masterpieces of visual storytelling, but that doesn't always translate to normies... Even Empire is such a cut above modern movies from its filmmaking, calling them boring is more of a self admission to not understanding cinema... That said Blair witch is the most overrated movie ever made soo I guess that makes this video the Kirk cousins of his videos

I enjoyed it, but I just didn’t love it as much as others, and had lotr fanboys on me for that. There’s a certain level of pretentiousness with the most obsessed tolkien fanatics.

I am stunned that none of the Marvel films appeared on this list. Also as old person who was there in 1999, I can confirm that Blair Witch is a bad film now, but the hype around it at the time was unbelievable. They marketed the hell out of that film and made it an event. That's why it worked.

Because for a long time Marvel movies have been very divisive, a lot of big names in hollywood have outright called them "not real cinema" with a lot of people agreeing, and as popular as they are, even fans that have watched most aren't that delusional IMO, most casual marvel fans know that most of these movies are subpar on their own, a lot of them only survive because of the shared universe, and have a lot of glaring flaws that people look past just because they wanna get to the next avengers movie. They're fun, but I don't think most people are that hyped over it, it's just casual mindless fun

As a fellow old person i agree about the hype, which was maginifcent. The film, however, sucked balls. Peoples nausa was found to have been caused by motion sickness from the style of camera work. The ending made me laugh out loud in an otherwise silent theatre.

Lord of the Rings is much deeper than a simple villain. All throughout the film Frodo struggles with his mission to destroy the ring, because it has such a corrupting influence on who bears it. If it wasn’t for Sam to help him as a loyal friend Frodo would’ve gone mad

If I remember correctly, it was pretty much Avatar’s CGI that carried it to the top of the all time box office. Kinda like how Tom Brady’s defenses was what carried him to his Super Bowls. Tough scene

From what I can tell, it was considered a notable film for the technical aspects of it, as opposed to the story. While well received, I don’t exactly see it on greatest film lists beyond its year of release (feel free to correct me if I’m wrong). And just because something grossed more money than you think it deserved to doesn’t make it overrated. High gross should be considered a sign that the marketers did their job with the product well as much as anything in my opinion.

Avatar is also one of the biggest reasons to buy a 3D television. It was an emerging fad when Avatar came out, and Avatar was legitimately great on a 3D TV. Unfortunately for 3D TVs, that was about the end of the reasons to get a 3D TV.

Scarface is intentionally campy. It is meant to be a satire on 80s excess. As for its place in hip-hop, the kay fabe of rappers fits in perfectly with gangster movie bravado.

The blaire witch project becomes actually horrifying if you imagine just getting lost in the woods and going insane without the paranormal shit

I think Maverick was a tale of expectations. The first wave of people went in to a sequel for a movie that didn’t require one 36 years later thinking it would probably stink. Then it didn’t, and they were so pleasantly surprised they hyped it up. Then the second wave of people came in listening to that hype and called it overrated.

I never believed in the whole "this movie is overhyped" argument. At least I don't believe people should believe in it. You see a movie and you either like it or you don't. It shouldn't matter what other people say about it, just watch it and judge it based on it's own merit, not develop any preconceived notions of what you think the movie is going to be.

For example, I like EP 4: A New Hope and EP 6: Return of the Jedi more than EP 5: Empire Strikes Back. In fact, I don't like Empire at all, but if other people like that's great, that's their opinion.

Love to see you branch into this kind of content. A lot of these are phenomenal movies that I think you are undervaluing. Mad Max, LOTR, and the Shining are incredible that can engaged with super deeply due to the ridiculous levels of detail. However, you are definitely spot on for Avatar and Top Gun Maverick.

I'm just glad you didn't include your favorite film and my favorite film..80 for Brady. That movie is perfect.

I agree. I love them (The Hobbit movies much less so..), but they aren't for everyone, Barry being one of them. No big deal. He never said they were bad movies either, and they aren't. So no harm no foul. With that being said, I don't think they are overrated. He definitely overlooked the theme of becoming corrupt slowly, over time, and having a support system in place to help you out. He was more focused on action and the whole good-guy vs bad-guy thing. Sauron (basically Satan, corrupting minds slowly, over time) Sarumon, Orcs, the fallen men chasing the ring-bearer, Frodo and even Sean Bean...err Boromir, falling victim to it and slowly descending into madness. Anyone could have been a bad guy. Except for Samwise. He seemed immune. He only had the ring for safe-keepings to help Frodo.

Of course it's not for everyone. The LOTR is for people who hate logic, believable storytelling and quality dialogue but enjoy movies oversaturated with CGI, movie effects, needless action, unearned power and even more action.

I think since Barry has said Tom Brady is the goat, he has been evolving into Skip Bayless.

I will disagree with one thing. Rooster didn’t hate maverick because his dad’s death, he hated him because maverick pulled his application to the academy, setting him back years

Aragorn Rodgers is supremely underrated. Gimli's Run game was on point in several crutial points. Gandalf with that great audible on the Bridge of Khazad-dûm saved the play switching it to a hand off end around sweep. Bill Balrog Bellicheck was not ready for that.

Some things were shocking or thrilling when released, and show their age when you look back at them. Not saying Blair Witch Project isn’t overrated (hadn’t heard of it until this video), but I would argue that something can age like milk and still be worth a good review.

Blair Witch Project was NOT the first found footage movie. That honor belongs to Cannibal Holocaust, which was so scary that the director was arrested for murder. I recommend giving it a watch

I’m a Packer fan and Brady hater so I’ve always loved Barry’s thoughts on Rodgers over Brady. A lot of my views align almost exactly with this video. I’m hyped for future vids like this. Hey Barry, as a horror movie expert, how would you rate the newest Halloween and Winnie the Pooh movies ?

Barry as someone who likes both the psychological thriller and found footage film genres and actually agree with your statement in the film especially with Blair witch. I just want to ask you if there is any film in either genre that you actually enjoy since all the recommendations I get are fall flat by the third act.

I have to say I agree with all of your choices except for Star Wars. I can admit that I grew up on the film and it was one of the things my dad and I bonded over so bias is definitely there. Great list though, I get a lot of push back when I say I don't think these films are as good as they're hyped up to be.

It’s literally the most overrated movie in the Star Wars franchise considering how boring it really is. Return of The Jedi and Revenge of The Sith are both better and ur not convincing me otherwise

@@Pingly187 to me the force awakens isn’t that bad, definitely number 7 thou on the list, eh maybe even lower, cause Rogue One and Han Solo a Star Wars Story are both better than the 3 current ones, and The Last Jedi to me reminds me of Empire but has a little more action but still is horrible, and there’s a couple select scenes from the last one that I love that gives me goosebumps: c-3po scene and the moment Lando comes with the whole fleet, jus the powerful inspiration man, but here’s my list in order: 1. Revenge of The Sith 2. Return of The Jedi 3. Rogue One 4. A New Hope 5. Solo A Star Wars Story (mainly love my boy Woody Harrelson) 6. The Phantom Menice 7. Empire Strikes Back 8. Abysmally wrong on Maverick. No one’s saying it’s “one of the best movies ever,” just that it’s a really good movie that was desperately needed at the time it was released, as well as Cruise demanding and pushing for it being a theatrical release. Yes, it’s very heavy on the tropes, but that’s fine. It’s a really good movie with some of the best “fight scenes” we’ve seen in a movie, and with the context surrounding it’s release, it’s a fantastic film. It’s an 8/10 and one of the few movies I’d be willing to see again within like three years of seeing it one other time.

The thing people forget about avatar was how incredible the CGI was for the time. Especially in 3d/theaters. It grossed so much because it was a spectacle not some cinematic masterpiece

Some of these I can agree with and see your perspective and I know you are not big on The Shining and that type of genre but that movie, LOTR, and Mad Max Fury Road are all excellent movies that do amazing things respectively.

It’s nice to see you branch out. We will have to agree to disagree on the three LotR movies, but I agree with the rest of the list. To take it a step further, the fact that I think Empire is the best movie of the original Star Wars trilogy makes me rethink how good those original films actually were. A large part of my love for the original trilogy is undoubtedly nostalgia. 6 year old me loved Empire.

WHAT MAD MAX????? edit: WHAT TOP GUN MAVERICK????? man idk what to say, both movies made me watch movies again at different time when i stopped going to the cinema because of how bad movies were at these times. I mean if it wasnt for Maverick i would have never went to see Nope or other movies that recently came out. To me Maverick is one of the greatest experience had because i went in with very low expectation and was very impressed by how nicely done it was. The action, the fairly concise but nicely told story, all of that was perfect to me. It is a movie who know what it should give you. Mad Max is 100% style of substance and im fine with it personally.

The Blair Witch Project is a lot scarier when you realize the plot is the two guys murdering the girl.

The reason Top Gun Maverick is so hyped isn’t because it’s an objectively great film, it’s because nearly every film for the past 5 years has been so utterly dogshit that it’s great by comparison. It’s like dying of thirst in the desert. No matter how rancid and muddy that puddle of water is, the dehydrated man finds it immaculate

@@Howitgoes799 I’ll give you the first 3, Parasite was dog water, and I’ve never heard of Climax. But that’s also why I said “nearly every” movie and not “every” movie. There’s always going to be a gem in there, but for the past several years every movie feels like it’s either a superhero movie, a “reboot, remake, or reimagining”, or so chock full of political pandering that it’s unwatchable

Barry would appreciate Rosemary's Baby more if he realized it was about the conception of Tom Brady.

Yeah I definitely agree with your #1 (I couldn't make it through the movie it was so boring) and the Blair Witch movie spawned the horrible genre of found footage that led to abominations involving "ghost hunting" and bigfoot. Only disagreement is the inclusion of The Shining, which I still think is one of the best horror movies ever.

Yeah, horror is my favorite film genre overall, but found footage is my least favorite sub-genre of horror.

Hopefully we get to see the other side of the coin and hear about some better movies next time. Great work Barry, branching out to new topics is lovely.

Top Gun Maverick is overrated because of the times we're living in. You could hear a worldwide collective sigh of relief after people saw a 2020s movie without any senseless wokeness, like a Mary Sue or a pedantic stale moral lesson about racism or homophobia

My opinion on the coaches (chronological order). Ten of the following 14: George Halas Curly Lambeau Paul Brown Vince Lombardi Tom Landry Don Shula John Madden Chuck Noll Bill Walsh Joe Gibbs Bill Parcells Bill Belichick Tony Dungy Andy Reid To me, those are the top 14, and I go back and forth between them.

Honestly impressed with how much I agree with this list. You nearly lost me with LotR but then I rememebered the action IS pretty slow outside of a couple epic battles. Overall great list, some of these aren’t bad, they just aren’t AS good as people say.

LOTR movies were the first movie I went to and said, "The action scenes are too long and make me bored!"

and now the arc of barry getting no views until the nfl season begins again, has started

Blair Witch Project is good because it is grounded in reality and doesnt rely on cheap after effects to make it scary. It is the only good "found footage" horror film though - I do agree with that

Watching this I just kept on think about the warriors losing against the cavs and Brady’s awful playoff passer rating. No idea why? Keep it up Barry. X

So many people are saying that BWP is overrated that I'm starting to think that it might not be anymore. Though the movie does improve if you subscribe to the theory that the whole movie was an elaborate plot from Josh and Mike to murder Heather. Clues are there, it adds another layer to the film, and it closes several possible plot holes.

what i always say about titanic is that rose shouldve gone with her mother so that jack could have fit on the door by himself.

I read the hobbit before watching the lord of the rings trilogy, not going to lie the first one is probably the best because theirs more adventure and the cast are altogether so the film has more focus. I think your issue is that. it's hard to adapt novels into films especially Tolkiens novels, he wrote them as bedtime stories for little children, you read 1 chapter a night or you could read until you fell asleep.

This was great, loved the NFL playoff percentage stat line; Forgot that it was in that film.

I have to agree with you on the shining. It wasn’t a bad movie by any means, I loved the set pieces and the decor and the acting was great, but I felt like it left so many things unexplained and I was forced to use google.

That's what happens when you hate the novel you are trying yo adapt, the sequel doctor sleep explained a lot of ship because they used Jack arc from the first novel in doctor sleep.
