The 10 Current Monarchs of Europe, Part 1 of 2

Part 2: • The 10 Current Monarch...
Please consider supporting me on patreon and help me make more fascinating videos: / lindsayholiday
Ten hereditary monarchies still survive in Europe. These royal rulers are seen as figure heads and public faces for their countries. They generate good will and patriotism and are involved in charity work but most are barred from holding any tangible government power. Here are stories of the 10 current monarchs of Europe. In this episode:
King Philippe of Belgium
Queen Margrethe II of Denmark
King Willem-Alexander The Netherlands
King Harald V of Norway
King Felipe VI of Spain
In the next episode:
King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden
Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom and Commonwealth Realms
Sovereign Prince Hans-Adam II of Liechtenstein
Sovereign Prince Albert II of Monaco
Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg

Well, why not simply, say Queen, then? People automatically, know that if the person is the Queen then she's reigning/ruling anyway. Using those words loosely, of course. I was tempted to ask about that myself, because I was thinking you were meaning to say Regent, instead. My Best. Out.

Beatrix' mother Juliana and grandmother Wilhelmina also abdicated. Wise women who considered that their working lives had been long enough and it was time to turn to their private lives from then on. As Queen Wilhelmina said after signing her deed of abdication: "Gentlemen, I'm dead now" and she never performed a public function again ― after being a queen from her 18th and surviving two world wars.

Yes - Victoria, Elisabeth, Leonor, and Catharina-Amalia are heirs presumptive or apparent, while Ingrid and Estelle are second in line to their respective thrones. Denmark and the UK, though they currently have male heirs apparent, have recently done away with male preference primogeniture, so we will likely be seeing a lot more female heirs in the future.

@@Edmonton-of2ec I am afraid that I did not explain myself well. The king did not have any choice in the matter; the law gives the order to do it in that specific moment. It is as if the judge gives you the order to go to prison: you do not decide to go to prison, you only can do it. He did not make any decision as he could choose to do or not doing the action, either the moment of dissolving it. At the moment that he could not choose, it is not his decision anymore. In all monarchies, the kings appoint the prime minister and signs the laws. So, under he-do-he-decides, he is also deciding ALL primer ministers, all laws and all political desitions. In Spain, only two (three, maybe) can give the order to the king to dissolve the parliament(s). The president of the government (The primer minister) and the president of the parliament (the equivalent of the British Speaker). I am not sure if the higher court can also give the order.

They are very relaxed around people they meet and Danes love that they don’t hide that even after nearly 15 years of marriage they are still crazy about each other. Mary has on many occasions been very outspoken about the desperate need around the world for improved rights for women and girls. She champions causes that promote the rights of women and children. Looking forward to this series! Would’ve been neat to split them into descendants of Victoria (Elizabeth, Margarethe, Carl Gustaf, Felipe and Harald) for one video and then the other five into another! But I think all of them except Monaco and Liechtenstein are descendants of the Electress Sophia.

piratesswoop: Elizabeth and Harald are both descended from Edward VII of the UK, Victoria’s eldest son, Margrethe is descended from Prince Arthur, Victoria’s third son, Carl Gustaf is descended from both Prince Arthur and Prince Leopold, Victoria’s youngest son. Felipe is descended from Princess Beatrice, Victoria’s youngest child, and Princess Victoria, Victoria’s oldest child. Philippe isn’t descended from Queen Victoria, but his great-great-great grandfather was Leopold I, first king of the Belgians and Queen Victoria’s uncle. Willem-Alexander isn’t descended from Queen Victoria either, but he is descended from George II of Great Britain like the others.

As they are non-hereditary they don't really qualify as monarchs in the sense of this video. The pope is elected by his peers, the bishop is appointed by his superiors in Rome an d the French president is elected by his people.

@@MensCloset That is an issue, because the Japanese Imperial family traces their family line back to emporer Jimmu in 660 BC, but I have not been able to find any proof that he really existed (maybe someone else has). However, the first king of Denmark (Denmark as in one country that is, which is the one I count, I would do that to with the HRE or the Empire of Germany), is Harald Blåtand, who died in 987 AD, so that is more than 1500 years in between. Within that time, there is proof of there being emporers in Japan, the Heian period started well before 987 AD. Sorry that I could not give you a complete answer.

Her younger son Joachim actually got married first, and their first child, Nikolai, was born in 1999. Crown Prince Frederik was more known for his adventures and thus didn't settle down until a few years later.

The Japanese monarchy is actually older than the Danish according to tradition. The first Japanese monarch (or emperor) was Jimmu-tenno who reigned between 660 BC and 585 BC. The Japanese emperor is a direct descendant of Jimmu, and the imperial line is thought to be unbroken for 2600 years.

@@langbo9999 Yes that is true. The viking age (while a somewhat loose concept) is generally considered to have taken place between ca 800 AD-1000 AD. Which is more than a thousand years after emperor Jimmu is thought to have reined. But then again, the historicity of Jimmu is not clear.
