Pretty sad about Netflix continously canceling shows after viewers get invested. Knowing how Dark evolved through 3 seasons, you'd think they would appreciate the formula; however, canceling 1899 after just 1 season, while knowing it's completely written with an ending ready, is super disappointing. Netflix is making me want to wait to see if shows are renewed before even getting myself involved in a storyline. Why watch when they are going to cancel on cliffhangers resulting in nothingness. I hope another platform picks it up, cause Netflix is getting too frustrating. 🙏

That's already how I watch most shows to begin with. I watch shows that are already finished or will finish soon. It's a nice way of cutting your losses and plus maybe finding some gems that aren't talked about because they're older and not new and trendy

Ironically, this approach is exactly why Netflix cancels shows. Not judging or anything, I'm the same, I usually only get around to watching new shows when the hype has already quieted down. But Netflix measures success in how much buzz a show creates, meaning: how many people binged this thing as soon as it came out to then go on social media and post memes about it, essentially advertising the show so people get subscriptions to see what the fuzz is all about, which is why Wednesday was such a huge success. So in not watching shows as soon as they come out, your watchtime doesn't really count towards their success as far as Netflix is concerned. Which is such a shame because it gives shows like 1899 a serious disadvantage. Tbh I still haven't finished it because I like to watch the episodes one at a time and think about them, and I know many people who also take their time with it. Meanwhile I'll binge easily digestable shows even when I don't really love them just because they make for nice background noise while gaming ^^' so I guess if Netflix continues measuring success like this, we'll end up with mostly easily digestable, easily memeable, mediocre quality shows...

@@Nirax3 About generating buzz for a show: The way Netflix usually releases shows, all episodes of a season all at once, has been shown to generate LESS buzz for a show, than releasing the episodes one at a time once a week (like HBO does). So they are kind of doing it wrong, even though personally I like to able to binge-watch it directly if I like to.

@@NisseHult101 yeah I mean they did that kind of hybrid release for Stranger Things S4 and it was a total success. I guess they are trying to figure out how to keep the bingewatching concept that is kind of their thing but also keep the hype alive longer with these stretching final episodes. I wonder if we're gonna see more of the big Netflix show following that pattern of a few 40min bunch released episodes and then some feature film length final episodes. Because that again changes how a show is structured, written and watched

I hope that you eventually cover "Derry Girls", a sitcom about four Irish girls and an unfortunately British boy coming of age during the Troubles in Northern Ireland in the 1990's. It finished up earlier this year, and though the final season wasn't as great as the previous two, it still ended up on an uplifting note. It can make you laugh one minute, and cry the next, and many of the characters are relatable, and feel like people you grew up with.

I am an aspiring linguist so 1899 is like a dream come true for me. I would love to work on a project like that as a writer or translator. I am also a huge huge fan of Dark, it’s my favourite thing I have ever seen - including both shows and movies. I am also Polish so I was super excited to see a Polish actor working with my favourite showrunners and when I heard him speak Polish for the first time I literally jumped because I was so excited. It was the show I anticipated the most this year and it definitely lived up to my expectations. Easily my favourite thing I have seen this year!

I am hungarian and there are plenty of movies and shows with hungarian actors but that's not what will make me like a show, but good writing and interesting concepts.

It is so annoying to see 1899 getting cancelled. Dark was one of the best shows in television history, but, honestly, it wouldn't be if there was only season 1. It is so common for shows to open up several plot narratives and mysteries just to disappoint with the payoff. Dark is the opposite. Mid season 3 I thought there is no way to tie all of this toghether in a coherent way. I was wrong. I don't think we can ever judge 1899 fairly, unless we get to see the scripts or it get's continued against all odds.

  • @reductosmash2483

    @reductosmash2483

I agree to an extent...but even so, Dark had already done more than enough to prove that it was worth your time by the end of its first season. I love Dark as much as Ninja and it's easily my favorite show...but they dropped the ball a bit with 1899. Is it terrible? Absolutely not. Is it incredible? Absolutely not. I enjoyed it, but compared to all of the other shows on here (and three shows it pains me to NOT see on here: The Last of Us, Wednesday, and Only Murders in the Building), it is bluntly profoundly mediocre. It most definitely could have turned into something remarkable, but it definitely didn't come anywhere close to instilling me with the same level of commitment and intrigue that Dark did. And I think the fact that, in addition to 1899 being cancelled, after nearly 5 months it hasn't been picked up by any other streaming service (and, based on how this kind of thing has gone in the past, never will) speaks volumes. For example, NBC announced that it was cancelling Community on May 9, 2014, and Yahoo announced that it was picking it up June 2, 2014, less than a month later. Upsets me a lot to see it cancelled because I'm still a fan and I would've really liked to see where things go, but it definitely doesn't deserve a spot on this list more than any of the three I named.

Eeeeeh, it was really mediocre. Nice animation but that's about it. It fails to set up this universe and explain it properly, just throws various characters at us that I guess people who played the games would know. Like the sick doctor guy, where was his story going? It did not lead to any good conclusion. Jinx was an idiot who after making some terrible mistakes, just right off the bat turned into ersatz Harley Quinn the next time we see her, going crazy out of nowhere. And the show never explains just... why does the high city oppress the slums? They have machines and tech so it's not like they are capitalists oppressing the workers, they literally don't need the slums. They could just as well let them separate and go their own way instead of policing and waging a war on them.

But I kept hearing about Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke’s performances so I finally checked it out and I’m so glad it did!! It’s like early GOT like season 1-3 and I’m so excited to see how wild things get in season 2! *Also I absolutely called your #1 pick because ofc you’re taste is excellent!*

As someone who has tried and failed multiple times to watch GOT, and likely never will because I know the plot already, HOTD was amazing. Completely fresh and unknown to me, Matt Smith drew me in but the whole cast made me stay (amongst other things ofc), and just the weekly hype was unbeatable.

I'm honestly surprised how lauded House of the Dragon is. It's not that it's completely awful, it's just... meh. The writing leaves a lot to be desired in my opinion. Some of the writing choices have been... baffling (especially the deviations from the source material) and on the level of post s5 GoT. And some of the characters have been butchered beyond repair. The direction is lacking in some of the episodes (looking at you Sapochnik and your awful day for night and 10 different cuts with actors standing in 10 different places between closeups and wide shots). The actors are carrying the shit out of the barebones material that they're given, but without their strong performances it wouldn't be where it is. I went in with no expectations, managed to get hyped after the first three episodes but sobered up pretty quickly after.

My favorite show of 2022 was Our Flag Means Death. It's really wholesome and funny. It starts as a workplace comedy for pirates then slowly morphs into a romantic comedy. I was really happy because it's been so long since I saw a good romantic comedy, where the romance is really cute and the comedy is gold. The two leads are Rhys Darby as Stede Bonnet, the Gentleman Pirate and Taika Waititi as Blackbeard. It's loosely based on real historic events and I was really surprised to discover the existence of Stede Bonnet because while we have all heard of Blackbeard I don't think many people know the Gentleman Pirate and he actually sailed with Blackbeard during the Pirate Golden Age. Pretty wild. Also, the show has a lot of good queer representation and has been applauded for not queerbaiting with their romantic leads. The romance starts with hints here and there, evolves and actually confirms the romance before the end of the season. I'm really excited to see the second season next year!

Its wild seeing Antony Starr go from playing Hood to playing Homlander, because you can see him using that same barely contained rage at the core of both roles, but the way he layers it under the two characters is so vastly different to get the beleaguered exhausted grey hero in Banshee, vs the egocentric entitled monster in The Boys

I went into it fully expected to have a good time but I was surprised how deeply I loved this show. The execution was beautiful, the directing was amazing (who gave Ben Stiller the right to make something this phenomenal) it was such a brilliant example of story telling with such a fascinating concept. Even the opening was gorgeous. It doesn't miss. Not with the story, the acting, any of it. Every choice was just perfect. And yeah my boyfriend I were screaming at the end right along there too! Severance sounds so interesting! Got to find the headspace to watch it. My list would have Our Flag Means Death near the top. I haven't actually watched a lot of new stuff, been too busy catching up on things I missed. Doom Patrol season 4 is starting to look wild, even for Doom Patrol. I'm a sucker for Criminal Minds, and I've been glad to see it resurrected. Loved The Sandman!

Also another good show this year was interview with the vampire, that one took me by surprise as well, I didn't expect such amazing performances from it.

My favourite show of the year is “Half Bad: The Bastard Son and The Devil Himself”. It's a fantastic magical, supernatural witch series with a good dose of gore, but the gore has its place and isn't just there for gore's sake. The series deals with a war being waged between two different witch communities: The Fairborn Withes vs The Blood Witches. Our main character, Nathan Byrne, is caught in the middle of this due to his heritage - half Fairborn on his mother's side and being half Blood on his father's. To add fuel to the fire his father, Marcus Edge, is the “World's Most Dangerous Blood Witch” and because of it, The Council of Fairborn Witches has been monitoring him for the first 16 years of his life out of fear he'd turn out like his father. There is a lot of commentary that can be gleaned from this series, due to the MC's race, gender, and sexuality and how that conflates with violence. As well as the idea of propaganda, the idea that history is told from the POV of the victors, and the twisted nature of politics and war. From what I've heard, this series also had an intimacy coordinator, which shows how the characters interact with each other and how touch is shown. Sadly, this series got very little to no promo as well and was cancelled after only one season, and even counting this I still can't recommend this show enough. The show contains excellent acting, good pacing, fitting music, and writing that doesn't insult the intelligence of those watching. The writing has faith in the audience to be able to piece everything together. Just know that its targeted demographic is teenagers, but for a teenage supernatural drama, it excels on every front. I love it so much, that I started reading the books just after I finished binging the show. I really hope you check it out and also Happy Holidays!

Thank you for the list and recommendations! I highly recommend watching The English. It is a slowburn 6-episode western mini-series with stellar performances by Emily Blunt and Chaske Spencer. The story is a usual revenge plot with some twists set in the late 19th century. It is very-well written, the production quality is topnotch and it has that classic (spaghetti) western movie vibe. It is easily one of my favourites of 2022.

Would recommend This Is Going To Hurt, a show I’ve not seen a lot of people outside the UK talk about. A dark comedy starring Ben Whishaw and based of the diaries of an ex junior doctor in the NHS, it doesn’t skimp on the reality of treating people in a hospital and the strain working in one puts on its doctors x

As somebody who works in a small restaurant very similar to the one in The Bear (East Coast pizza place as opposed to Chicago sandwich shop, but very similar), I have never felt more seen by a writer’s room. They perfectly captured the hellish grind of working in a place like that. There’s a fucking Hobart dough mixer in the background of a few shots that we literally have at my work. It speaks to me.
