    Bollocks. Missing whole chunks of it all, especially Christian Death and Fields of the Nephilim. But of course, it's not for us who did not wait for tee-vee to tell us what we must listen too…

    @@herchelleonwood7463Yeah, there were always those in the "scene" who tried to be cooler than everyone else with their musical references. The vast reality though was an inclusive environment and also an appreciation for all bands expressing their feelings of otherness. But, just like any group of people, there are always the "jerks" who try so hard to be cool but really aren't. Any list of Top 10 songs will be difficult to curate as so much material is out there. I give this video credit for delving in and putting it out there. It is inclusive and hits on some of the great that defined a movement and a subculture that has stood the test of time.

    @@herchelleonwood7463 but that person has a point. Christian Death has to be on a top 10 goth list. Not only they were one of the few pioneers of that movement but were highly influential. No group can be more goth than them with their lyrics, videos, etc. Songs like Romeo's Distress or Spiritual Cramp has to be there. At least as an honorable mention...

    Yeah, weird to see such a list without Christian Death's (nor Fields of the Nephilim's) songs. Songs like Romeo's Distress or Spiritual Cramp from C.D. has to be there.

    Nice video and I liked it. But your Sisters of Mercy choice is really bad. Their iconic songs would be either Temple of Love or Alice. The one you putted there is barely with gothic themes and was almost a commercial song. The Cure's iconic songs would be either Boys Don't Cry or K*illing an Arab. I guess you discovered Gothic pretty late. Your omission of the band Christian Death is a blasphemy. There was one of the most influential bands of the Gothic movement and were pioneers of that movement along with Bauhaus. Romeo's Distress or Spiritual Cramp has to be there on that top 10. Overall, though, I enjoyed your list and your comments and anecdotes about the singers or the groups.

    If I remember correctly, indeed, the 12' inches was released in 1979. I think the confusion is that another version of it, a live version, has been released in 1982 on a live album by Bauhaus. The Hunger was released in 1983,

    «10 best goth songs of all time» says who? Controversial choices. A choice of ten best songs is always subjective, you can never define it as the ten best of all time. For example, I would never choose Dominion as the best SoM song, it isn't. Not even their 15th. But that's just me.

  • @nietzschescodes

    @nietzschescodes

    that is not just you. Dominion was an awful choice. It is commercial, with no really gothic content in the lyrics. The obvious choices would have been either Alice or Temple of Love.

    @@nietzschescodes Your opinion, that’s all right with me. Dominion is a good song, but an awful sisters of mercy song. If it was written/composed by any other ordinary band, i would accept it as a good song, i can never see it as a great sisters of mercy song. In fact, Eldritch should change the name SoM when Wayne and Craig leave the band. From that moment on, everything that came after, could never be considered sisters of mercy. That’s what i think. Everybody can disagree.

    @@domingospinto4285 I agree. Dominion is a good song, but it is really neither a top song of Sisters of Mercy, nor even an iconic song from them. I also agree with your second point. A song like Serpents Kiss from the Mission is basically a legit SoM song. It sounds more SoM than songs from "SoM" after First and Last and Always.

    @@nietzschescodes One more thing, Dominion is a song written and composed in the time of andy, hussey marx and adams. Contrary to what one might think, there was a demo of that song, long before floodland. I just don’t like how it sounds in floodland. I heard it in demo, and if i’m correct was Wayne Hussey the one who sang it.

    A good list apart from Starman - I agree about Bowie's massive influence on goth, but Starman just isn't goth. Not sure I agree that The Damned's Phantasmagoria was a goth album either , although Shadow of Love is close enough so I'll let you have that one!

    Most people don't think of Black Sabbath as Goth, but they are. Look at the cover art of their first album and listen to "NIB" (AKA Nativity in Black). I think of them as the first Goth Band. Combine David Bowie and Black Sabbath, then you've got what Goth became.

    Nice beginner's guide. But some of these choices are well into the career of the artist and don't reflect the real gothiness - such as The Cure, Sisters and even The Cult who had a couple of gothier incarnations too. But yeah, Bowie Bowie Bowie - I love Bowie but he's NOT GOTH (until he donned black eyeliner for Outside) and he's not the only source. As well as the Doors (mentioned elsewhere) most of the UK goths were heavily influenced by early Roxy Music - some of the Banshees met at a Roxy gig. If you listen to "For Your Pleasure" you'll see why. In Every Dream Home was later covered by Rozz Williams, Peter Murphy has it up on his greatest hits, and so on. I know Roxy didn't make it big in the US, and in the UK we tend to think of them as a slick 80's band, but go back into the 70's and you'll see what the goths were listening to. I heard a shortened version of the Bogus Man a couple of years back live, and it was the gothest thing I'd heard in an age. And I goth my goth :D
