I think you also need to mention that they should have sufficient room to move about the tank and have room to grow, but overall I totally agree. FINALLY SOMEONE WHO AGREES WITH ME. After I got into the fish hobby a couple years later I got my friend into the hobby and he always went for the inch per gallon rule and would always say my tanks were overstocked. I mean he wasn't wrong but all the fish were nice and healthy and lived long happy lives because I had a good filter and the water was very clean. It's been a few years now and some of those fish are still living and in great condition.

Good info on filtration. Speaking from a cichlid point of view, species selection is far more important when stocking a tank and no 'inch rule' as you pointed out will work/apply in any situation

Exactly bro. Doesn't matter if you have the "exact" number of fish. If they aren't compatible and your filtration is shit then who cares about the inch rule
YES ! I got single species different varieties tanks that can be considered to be "way-overstocked" but just like you, my tanks are well planted, I got good filtration, and I'm pretty consistent with water changes. Got a couple 36 gallons tanks one with only rasboras and the other with only tetras, different varieties with over 40 fish in each and love to see the schooling behavior that you can only get from large* numbers.

Surprisingly, my pepper and panda always stay together and are always roaming the tank. So the thing about having a minimum of 6 corys doesn't always have to be the case either. Do water changes, good filtration, live plants, and the fish will be happy.

Being someone who just started out in the hobby a few months ago, I believe this can be a good way to ease beginners into the hobby. Cheers great info...I have 10 gallon square mini pond with some baby comets...will either get bigger tank or all but one (tiny runt of the family) will go into a larger pond later down the line, but at mo, thanks to filtration, 15-20% water changes daily and lots of plants, with some snails for a week old set up (had fish added 2 days ago) my ammonia is 0.2 and nitrites 0.25... so much different these days than from years ago. Of course gallon gestapo will kill any joy I get and there is one of my comets that either way I will put in a big pond....just the way he swims and his body form, he will be more suited, but the others are much happier than their crap pet store beginnings. But I will try that filtration youre using...my carbon didnt arrive and so its just a sponge and a plant in the filter...will get refund and go for the seachem :)
Great tank!! Beautiful fish! Great job!!! I agree that the 1inch per Gallon (or 1cm per litre rule in UK) is not always true. An experienced fish keeper such as yourself will be fine overstocking. Also your plants are healthy and growing so will also act as an additional filter. Also when you over filter you will have more flow which always helps with most plants. Plants are such an important part of keeping a natural aquarium.

Thanks a lot for this vid- exactly what I needed- mine is a 2.5g tank with 4 fish- but a powerful overhead lid filter that sucks up almost 90% detritus or poop, kept in middle of hall in my small flat- so mild indirect sunlight or room light & no chance of algae at all- 3 white pebbles on bare bottom of tank with a plastic plant behind the tank so seems simple enough with pothos growing out at the top... People living with restricted space must also get the chance to keep pets...
Water changes are the highlight of my day lol

I agree with you. BUT always remember that not everyone is going to do the research. Set up can be very expensive. Most are not going to spend the money "on fish" just because I recommend it. Which I do on a daily basis. 1 inch per gal is just a guideline. A guideline that I firmly use because when buying fish, customers want to fill their tank. Forget that they get bigger, forget that this will in turn cause more waste, forget that the fish might not get along as they mature. Their "forgetfulness" obviously is ignorance or laziness, I tend to go with the latter, is why I keep to those guidelines. Not to mention feeding. When a tank is over-popluated it becomes very difficult to feed everyone. That it turn can lead to many issues. Not to mention the types of fish, where they like to swim in the tank (top, middle and bottom). All of those and more are key factors to ensure minimal stress and water quality. I know that there are SO many opinions on this, just remember that when posting these videos, not everyone is an avid enthusiast that have several tanks, belong to aquarists groups or educate themselves daily on the fish world. "Filtration is the Key" is a bad message to send out. You could have four canister filters and you could still have issues. You should do videos on individual topics. For example: Want more fish in your tank? >Who will get along and why. The canister filter>Why I love it. Want more fish in your tank> Top feeders, middle feeders, bottom feeders that will get along. I'm just saying, it's not the only thing that matters as you did point out some in your video, but not all. Your tank is beautiful and rainbow fish are my fav's.

I totally agree that the 1 inch per gallon "rule" is BS Fist of all, some tanks are so full of substrate, big rocks rock and other things leaving a much reduced water column . So a 15 gallon tank may only hold about 10 gallons of water. A bit of realty in in order. How much water do you really have? So what really is over crowding? Consider that topical fish have now been captive bred for many countless generations and overcrowding in now beginning to be part of their natural habitat. So, let's not rely on old standards as if they are the gospel truth and just use a bit of common sense and do what really seems to work. Fact is, the old recommendations were from years ago when regular water changes were not the norm for the average home user ...and we now have better filtration.
The inch per gallon rule can easily be broken with small tropical species like you have and planted tanks like you have. But with BIG fish, these rules cannot be broken so easily. Big fish can't usually be kept in planted tanks like that. They won't leave the plants alone and nothing can grow. Also, not all species produce the same amounts of waste. I have a 55 gallon that I turned tropical. 1 Blood Parrot, 6 Tiger Barbs, and 3 Cories. The water quality stays good for well over a week even with no live plants (Blood Parrots can't usually be kept with live plants). When I had just TWO goldfish in the same setup, the tank was filthy within a week easily. Goldfish simply produce way more waste than tropicals. That's why I stopped trying to keep them in tanks. With regards to the inch thing, also people don't calculate adult sizes of fish. The feeder goldfish might be an inch when you get them, but they'll be 7 inches in a year. Get a 60 gallon and put 6 of them in there, you'll have a badly overstocked tank within a few months. AGAIN, these rules are different for fish that don't get large. My Cories won't reach more than 2-3" at most and they're tropicals that don't produce waste like goldfish. The 1 inch rule would probably work fine with them.

I agree that the inch per gallon rule is complete garbage. However, assume you have or like to keep Dovii. Even a 120 gallon wouldn't work in this situation because once the Dovii reaches say 20+ inches it won't matter how much filtration you throw on the tank, because water changes would need to be done daily just to try to keep up with the bioload that one fish produces. Now let's say we "overstock" that 120 with 4 Dovii, it wouldn't end well for the fish at all even if you ran 5 Fx5's on that single tank. Now I know this is an extreme circumstance, but from what you said, newer hobbyist may assume that because what you said it'd be a perfectly fine ms thriving setup. I think adding that the full size of the fish, their comparability with others as well as their needs should be looked at and understood before taking to buying a bunch of fish that have the potential to grow larger than the tanks ability to house them humanly. If not you run into the fish growing deformed and ultimately being very unhealthy, not to mention the extra work in order to maintain a good water parameter. Just adding on is all.

I was thinking the same thing Mike. I have a 10 gallon tank with artificial plants, 8 glofish danios, 3 zebra danios and 2 ghost shrimp. The tank was cycled and I had the Tetra Whisper 10 filter but it could not handle the load and my ammonia would constantly rise even with 3 water changes a week. When I picked up a Fluval Aquaclear 30 it was like heaven opened up. The fish were more perky and now I only have to change the water once a week if that. It's all about filtration. Great video, people need to know this.
@MASSAquariums

Yep. Filtration is they key. You can have good numbers of fish while keeping your filtration under control
Finally common sense. Its about the filtration, and the plants. Its also the shape of the tank/pond that can make big diff to how your fish feels swimming with other fish. As long as fish can swim, turn, go up, go down, hide, explore in clean water eco system environment, they will be just fine with more than the recommended 'rules'. But, see too many fish experts harassing other stocked tanks and ponds and it takes the joy out of fish keeping.

Hey I love your aquarium ❗ And you are right, you can overstock your tank as long as your fish stay healthy and happy. Your fish seem active, yet not aggressive towards each other. But it's not easy to get to that point. I think the denser you stock your tank the greater the margin for error gets.

I know this is an older video, but it's amazing how little things change... I'm astonished that anyone anywhere ever thinks adding extra filtration can be harmful. Maybe if it's a salt water reef tank, but that's a separate issue. My main issue with overstocked tanks is the mulm build up, especially if you're feeding more than only occasionally with a tiny pinch. HIGH FLOW should be discussed, and it's rather important to help reduce mulm build up in such tanks due to greater oxygenation.

I completely agree for larger tanks, but say for under 20 gallons maybe. In my two 10 gallons, I have a least 70+ red cherry shrimp at 1/2 inch. So it comes down to what you stated, Filtration filtration.

Good filtration and larger Tanks is key
I agree bro great topic.
very true brother .....filtration is key that inch per gallon is fugazy son lol good filters aqua clear hang on the back...fluval,api,sun sun canister filters ...great video mike
My first tank I started with 3 mollies, 5 neons,2 dwarf frogs, and 2 ottos in a 20 long. About 2 years later that tank probably had 20 more mollies in it from them breeding. Water parameters on that tank were always golden never had any suprises. Ran a 55g hob filter and a hell of alot of plants. I moved with that tank from oregon to San Diego and didnt lose a single fish. Now here I am under stocked, running a high tech tank and I've got algae and ich. Weird stuff

If you’re using tap water, the quality in SD is terrible in comparison to Oregon
Good info...brodda Mass...I totally agree with you. Extra Filtration is the best and only way to go. ..so everyone should take heed to the information you just shared...because to me that's not an opinion. ...they are facts. ..

The facts brothah. You know it SON. UHEARD. LOL. That was a big slice move. Lmao. Love YA bro. Thanks for stopping by
i have a 15 gallon tank and i'm running 3 filters, one sponge filter and 2 submerged pumps with external/hanging bio and mechanical filter. i have 10 danios, 10 algae eaters, 6 colored white skirts and 1 black moor. plenty of rooms, no signs of aggression on any of them. my water is crystal and i am using plastic plants with some driftwood and pebbles as my substrate. my tank set up has been running for a month now and no fish got sick or died yet and they seem to be energetic and happy. Would be nice to hear your thoughts about my case. thanks!
I agree with you man. But I think they say it because its like most ppl who go into the store to start their tanks don't know a lot and don't buy the expensive stuff. I have canister and hobs on all my tanks. Canister is big sponges and bio media, ome of the HOBs has the fine filter floss and purigen. The 2nd HOB is just there to make water movement, use it only for the chemical part like carbon when I need to. But if you have enough plants you don't need to worry. Mine are always 0. I don't even do water changes. I just add water.
Still one of my favourite tanks. Im working on my own now.

I have a 360gph Marineland canister filter on a 65 gallon tank. I was think of stocking it like this 4 angelfish 4 Denison barbs 8 Congo tetras 15 rummynose tetras 2 Royal farowella 2 German blue rams Is this too much or can I add a few more fish?
@MASSAquariums

No that’s pretty good. You could add some more small schooling fosh
Great video.......and tank! You're preaching to the choir here. I currently have 3 schools of 7 {tiger barb, zebra danio & sunburst platy} along with a couple of 3-spot gourami, 2 dwarf gourami, 2 albino rainbow sharks a rubber-lip pleco and a couple of ottos in my planted LT 50G. Going by the inch per G rule, I'm overstocked by at least twofold. And that's total BS! I'm running 2 HOBs {next acquisition will be a canister}.......a Marineland 350 bio and a Topfin 60. Between the 2 filters, pleco, ottos and the plants my tank is clean & fish are happy-happy.

Way to go. Yep. Filtration is key. I like the Fluval 406. Great turn over rate and very easy to maintain and buy parts if needed. Thanks for watching
Your tank is nice as hell! Im new to the hobby, i just recently started on a 10 gal tank. (Wish I would've got a 20 gal after learning the 1" per gal rule) I have 12"s of fish now (4) I really wanna get two more. Would u suggest maybe running a 20 gal filter on it?...

10 gallon is very small to maximize your space for fish. I would spend your money on a bigger tank before a better filter honestly

Interesting. I am relatively new to the hobby. I have a 20 long. I have 6 Female betta sorority (no they don't fight), 8 ember tetras and 3 pygmy cories. It is very, very heavily planted. I leave my light on all day and I don't run my filter. I do weekly water changes and vaccum my substrate. My parameters are perfect, my water is crystal clear and I don't get any algae. I think I lucked out and my tank just is in a really good state of balance.

You can also do the opposite of mass filtration. I have a 29 gallon marine tank and only have 9 or 10 inches of fish. I check my levels often and never actually water change. I add freshwater when it needs topping off and knock the salt crusties back in to keep the salt level where it is. Been running it for 3 years. I have cleaners too...shrimp, snails, and emerald crabs. : )

Hey Mike, so i have a ten gallon fish tank with no plants and im running an aqueon quiteflow 10 filter. I wanted to get a stronger filter so which filter would you recommend for a ten gallon aquarium? I also wanted to know what fish i should stock my tank with i usually keep the tank at around 78 degrees. I love your videos man, keep up the great work

I would go with an Aquaclear 20 and maybe a Betta or some neon tetras and a couple Cory cats. Really what ever strikes your eye at the store. They have to stay small and be tropical. Guppies. 2 german blue Rams. So many options. Just don't put to many in at once. Thanks for watching.

MASS Aquariums I was actually thinking the same thing but instead of tetras I wanted to do rasboras
quick question when cleaning out a planted tank do you take out big stones drift wood to scrub down or never

I'm a new subscriber and I would like to say that you have an amazingly helpful channel, your videos and explanations are very easy to understand compared to other channels. With that said, I do have a question for you, I started this hobby about a year ago and thankfully I've been very lucky to still have all my fish from all previous aquariums ( started w a 10 gallon them 20 then 30 and now a 60) main reason I went from 30 to 60 is because of my Bala Sharks, I do know that 60 eventually won't be enough, they are (2 of them) about 4.5 inches now so I think I'm ok there for now. I would like to add more fish to my tank but I would like ur advise if I already have too many fish. So here is what I have: 2 Bala Sharks, 2 angelfish, 1 dwarf gourami , 8 guppies, 4 black phantom tetras, and 3 Cory ... I run one 75 gallon and one 60 gallon over head filters and do water changes weekly. All I want to add is two more angelfish, your input will be appreciated

+MASS Aquariums can you tell me what lighting and plants are in that tank? it's beautiful but the only plants I can find that are that green are Java fern and anubias.
Jesus lol and here i was worried i didn't have enough filtration. By my calculations the tank filters completely 18 times an hour when they are on max and 9 on the lowest setting. They are also fully pimped out with lots of bio media lucky bamboo and pothos. Thanks for the tips great info!

Sounds good to me
I have a 20 gallon with an AquaClear 30 with a foam pre filter some decent plantings with a lot of small fish , 11 Neons , 6 Harlequin Rasboras ,6 Cherry Barbs , 5 Albino Cory’s , 4 Otocinclus cats and 5 Red eye Tetras . I exchange 3 gallons every other week and test the water once a month or so with absolutely no problems.

Thanks for the great information! Specifically, Is 5 neon tetras, 2 tiger Barbs, 4 Pygmy Corydoras, 2 guppies, and 2 platies to many fish for a 10 gallon tank that filters 100 gallons per hour? I plan to have many live plants as well!
