    I learned over the years that under stocked tanks are so much easier to maintain parameter wise. Plus adding more plants also helps. If I want more or different types of fish I can set up another aquarium. And btw I don't think your 20 gal. tank is over stocked😁

    All these fish are producing waste, this plays a part within the tank size, less oxygen also. If the nitrates are low, then keep as many as possible for the tank size

    Pushing the boundaries in a tank can be more easily done if you spend a lot of time watching the tank and the behavior of the fish by having the tank in a room that you spend most of your time in so you can easily spot even the slightest problem such as aggression or unusual behavior. Oversizing your filtration and having a good turnover rate are great too. I shoot for 6x in my 125g Silver Dollar/Veiltail Oscar community tank and 4x in my 56g planted angel tank. Both are tied to a single sump for a 200g total volume. Adding Catappa leaves in a high flow sump will quickly up the level of mulm as will having a lot of driftwood that the plecos chew on and eat. Fast growing Amazon Swords create a ton of mulm as the oldest leaves underneath disintegrate. Since connecting the tanks together and adding the Catappa leaves all of my Silver Dollars started breeding after having had them for over 4 years with no prior breeding behavior. I found babies in the sump.

    @@DanHiteshew-oneandonly They go from silver to black on their bodies and fins. All of them get wound up at the same time and there will be 2, 3 and 4 of them lined up side by side shaking their bodies into each other. I posted a video of them doing it. It does disrupt the harmony of the tank and they have no interest in their food when it happens. It usually lasts for a couple of hours and they have been doing it every week now. I'll keep the two smaller than a dime sized babies I found in the sump but I really didn't plan on keeping more of these once they reached the end of their lifespan.

    Love how you broke this down. It's exactly how I think when stocking. I find it so ludicrous that people think they can always tell if a tank is overstocked by looking at it. Sometimes you could have a lot of fish but lots of plants or do lots of water changing. As long as fish have room you can't use silly rules like 1 inch per gallon

    I split my tank in layers… top, mid, and bottom. I’ll pick a species or 2 for each layer n fill it bit by bit. I’ll keep an eye and adjust accordingly. But I mainly try to not overwhelm one of the tiers as that section could become “overstocked”.

    A aggressive fish may not be over stocked many people in the child branch. Thinks that it is then better to stock some more and spread out that aggression. So maybe with a aggressive fish it may be understocked..🤔🥰😍💕

    The important parameter is the volume of the fish body, not it's length. 10 inches of neons is NOT equivalent to a single 10 inch fish, the latter has a far higher body volume.

  • @Dassenkop
    @Dassenkop Жыл бұрын

    Ended up going through the same considerations you explained. Spend several weeks/month checking different fish that could work with my ‘bioload’ and ended up with 6 black neons who now peacefully occupy the higher parts of my tank. Will continue to monitor parameters the coming weeks although I expect no issues.

    I currently have an understocked tank! One betta in a 10 gallon tank, with nothing else. I mean, plants, of course, but no other animals. I was thinking of some small type of shrimp like cherry shrimp, or some snails, my betta is too old and slow for anything that might get nippy with it, only the most peaceful tank mates are an option at this point, but then bettas like water on the acidic side (my tank ranges from 6.6 to 6.8), while things with shells or exoskeletons like water that is basic, so it doesn't seem like a good idea to put them both in the same tank. Now I need some other ideas...

    Most of those probably could be summed up to fish having good quality of life but id separate that with biological capacity/maintenance because in a lot of fish rooms people have auto water changing set ups so even if they have a bare bottom with a small sponge filter and constant dilution the fish are fine.

    I have a 29 heavy planted tank with 6 panda garra, 3 german blue rams, 10 otos, 2 guppies a pair, one juvi male wonder killi, one baby mustery snail two nerites, 6 corys, some ram and pond snails. Tank is tested once a week I keep a journal and will go to zero if I don't fert. Tons of hornwart, anubias, water lettuce a tidal 55, a hyyger double sponge filter with biomedia val and lots of crypts mulmy gravel bottom capped with a good 2 maybe 3 inches of sand. So far so good but I've been trying to not overstock it its been peacefully going along no issues as of yet I keep a journal and test weekly to see what my plants need as I also have TONS of duckweed pothos and salvinia also have lots of Java fern crypts val and pinto ridleyi 😅 thoughts? I don't plan on adding more accept the one female guppy to make it a 2 female 1 male trio. I feel like it's a full house but I have population control through the killi and I let the Cory's eat the eggs for now till I get another tank. It's been going solid for about a year or more Crystal clear water but if I sent fert even with the amount of fish the plants suffer.

    I'm quite new to fish keeping and this was a helpful video. I honestly think my 12 gallon bookshelf is overstocked. The reason I say that is because my filter media gets absolutely filthy in 3 to 4 days. I do a 50% water change every week and a gravel vac every week or two but my two sponge filters and my HOB filter are absolutely filthy. I'm very anal so I stay on top of it but through some circumstances, i.e. my kids buying me fish, lol, I believe I have too many and will just wait for some of them to die off. Until then, I will stay diligent in my maintenance. I just don't want two tanks to maintain. I will add that I have only nano fish and there are 16 fish which probably isn't terrible but I still think it's too many based on how dirty my filtration gets.

    I think you hit it on the head. It depends on the various circumstances. If you were a novice it would probably be on the side of being overstocked. But someone with long-term experience like you who knows how to monitor parameters, aggression and growth (and has the means to deal with the angelfish should it get too big) can make it work, so it doesn't appear to be on the side of overstocked under those circumstances.
