The 1 Concept That Changed My Life...

There have been many concepts that have made an impact on me, but this specific concept has a special place in my heart. In this video, I will share with you the concept of the "salt & water." This concept came at a turning point in my life and helped me to make the necessary shift into who I am today. I wanted to share it openly with you and I hope this is helpful for anyone who is struggling out there. Enjoy! #monks #buddhism #mentalhealth

All I know for sure is that we all have salty lives no matter what, and we shouldn’t wait for rough times to add water to the pot. Doing good and purifying our life can only do us good.

Nick, I love you and God had actually used you at tines to bring me messages that I needed at the time. I love Buddhism and a lot if the practices but one thing I've learned is that we don't have to carry the burden of our karma through the concept of grace. I finally understand that through Jesus we have forgiveness and a clean slate. As a song once said, Jesus dropped the charges. By grace we are healed and saved. We cannot buy it or pay for it. Dies that mean we continue to do bad, no because we have experienced unconditional love and forgiveness and we live a new life. We don't have to live in pain and suffering and we do good because of love.

Venerable Nick, your talks along with studying and practicing Buddhism and Stoic Philosophy have completely changed my approach to life. This salt metaphor resonates as precisely how I am to live my life. I understand that suffering is inevitable but not permanent, nor are good times permanent. What you said that “with every crisis comes an opportunity” is what I tell myself each day. It is so very simple to understand. There’s no need to try to figure out something complicated, you’ve made it crystal clear. The next step is to practice this very very wise counsel. It’s interesting that we’re here in this world, but don’t have a clear understanding of how to live our best lives. We tend to buy into living according to the messages that we receive in our capitalistic society that makes us believe that happiness comes from acquiring things and the outside of ourselves. That’s a LIE, happiness comes from within and is a byproduct of following the Eight fold path (adding water)👍🏽This lesson is wonderful, because it teaches us how to be happy by doing the right things. All I can say is wow.!😮 I will continue to meditate and follow the noble eight fold path and be realistic about suffering. I love that you use everyday language that anyone can understand. You leave to us to dig deeper to learn more Buddhist terms. Thank you a million times over.

I changed my path 2 years ago at 47. This year has been the most lonely because part of my change was to discontinue alcohol & being around others who consume alcohol and also places alcohol is, so basically i have eliminated 99% of my past social life. I feel so good and more peaceful however i have lost a lot of people from my life. I am sticking with my path regardless. Thank you for your wisdom. 🙏

Mostly because my husband's sobriety was for both of us We both had Alcoholism in our lives as children. We met and fell in love and knew we were going to be together no matter how hard it got because of this dreadful disease.ultimately by the Grace of love my husband chose me,our daughter and above ALL the man, husband, and father he became the last 32 years of our lives. Hang in there love of self first will bring all the love u will find in your new life. 🎉🎉🎉❤

Man, I wish more people in the world were like you. Honest, helpful, and you're discussing personal events that are uncomfortable (breakup), but you're giving advice from when you were vulnerable. Same with asking for advice from your mother. These are signs of strength. Helping others and expecting nothing in return like you're doing on here is exactly how we should all be treating each other. I continue to look forward to your videos! ❤

Thank you. ❤ Without realizing it, this is how I have dealt with the suffering in my life. My darkest time was in my late twenties when I began my psychiatry residency. I had gone through a divorce, and I was estranged from my parents. A chasm of pain opened inside me, and I felt completely lost. I cried A LOT. I felt hopeless and thought about suicide. But I kept telling myself there must be a reason for the suffering. I started therapy and focused on doing the best I could to help my patients. I'm now 62. Life still brings suffering, but it no longer consumes me. I have emotional strength. I have become a good therapist and have helped alleviate suffering in others. I live as honestly as I can, by my values. I work hard. I'm modest about my needs, I try to give to others, and I support organizations that protect the earth and wildlife. I nurture a garden. 13 years ago, I reconciled with my parents, who immigrated to the US from China as children. It took much longer, but we have forgiven each other for the hurt we all experienced. I stay open to learning from videos like yours! You share a profound yet simple wisdom. ❤ thank you!

"harsh reality" only reflects your state of mind, not others.hard to believe and accept, just practice, you will acquire freedom. There's no challenge if you practice to accept and appreciate your life and others. The rest will be taken care of. Remember, not on your watch!!! God bless

When we look for validation outside of ourselves ( a relationship etc) we can lose our balance. Then one day we find out that we are just fine without the outside validation. And then we learn to build on that… and THEN we see the beauty in life, and in ourselves, and in everything around us. Love and light! ❤ this is a wonderful and helpful video, thank you!

Great message, thank you Nick. I lost myself a little over a year ago in a divorce after being married 13 years, stopped intoxicants that we both used in the marriage and started working in a 12 step program to help myself at first and now others. I did the same for 6 years and it was awesome...I am glad to be back in that community. We also started a Dharma Recovery gathering 2 weeks ago, yesterday I brought a little treat for us all to share. I am lonely in a certain sense only, but in most ways we measure my life is so very full. I will keep adding drops of water, and the salt...salt for me comes in many forms, that from gluttony or procrastination or envy is hard to stop...but glad I watched this today, today I will not add salt.

Then many months after the package finally showed up at my door! So I need to call the company and pay for it. If not, that would be stealing. I had forgotten. Thank you.🙏🌿

I listen to Eckhart Tolle teachings since a year or so. Almost on a daily basis. He helped me calming the mind and find stillness, trust and inner peace. It is livechanging to come in to the present moment. Every day I am deelpy thankfull. Now I discovered you and your wonderfull channel. And I realist it is basically the same teaching as I know from Tolle. It leads me to the recognition, how much Buddhist ethos really resonate with me. Thank you for sharing this videos and all my love to you from switzerland❤️

For most parents (myself included) our instinct is to protect our children, even our adult children, and make the pain disappear but your mother handled it correctly by not minimizing or trying to fix the situation but instead providing you the wisdom to work through it yourself. I had my heart broken when I was younger, it felt like I had a knife in my chest but luckily I was surrounded by people who listened but didn't let me wallow in my misery. Positive action and helping others is the way out of the pain. Thank you so much for this!

Thank you so much 🙏🏻🙏🏻💚 How do we deal with daily elderly negativity? 😢 They don't stop complaining & they love talking to me because i listen and help them feeling better. But I kind of " absorb " their sadness, & then it makes me feel sad for the rest of the day - unless i go to nature & meditate - The next day, same thing: they complain, they cry, they think about their past & i absorb their negativity for hours 😢 Sometimes i just want to shake them, seriously 😂 🙏🏻💚

Do a ritual out the door. Sweep their umbilical cords they attach to you before you get in the car. Some of my dementia patients were inspiring and happy too. Brain changes & not realizing change, plus our medical system keeps prime alive sometimes beyond where they should be. There are dates worse than death, i think.

No matter how much you struggle to forget, you will cause tension, mixing up the jar and making the water muddy. But if you float and lay still, the salt eventually falls and gathers down to the bottom. We all have problems, and the best way to deal with them is to let them pass us by without reacting so vigorously to it. Let it pass more often, and soon, you can think, “I have overgrown my guilty feelings” That is a point in where the mind tricks you. Self doubt can stir the jar once more, the water then becomes diluted once more. Nick clearly stated how it’s not sure how long each person will heal. It could take me months, years, maybe even a decade or two. But I’m not seeking for the end goal, I want to let it happen naturally without knowing. That is the peace I want to flourish. Thank you Nick for showing us yet a simple moral in life and how it affects our perspective on life.

I am not a Buddhist, I am an Episcopalian, and I love your channel. There is the same issue in my family as far as not sharing emotions. It’s a hard thing to do and there are so many cultures that are like this. It’s because sharing emotions means admitting things are not perfect, maybe not even good, and you don’t want to share pain with people you love because you don’t want to cause them pain. Hold your precepts! Yes. I love this. Live your truth. I need to work on not harming animals: I’ve had a hard time from transitioning to complete veganism from vegetarianism. Do you think that antidepressants count as intoxicants?

Thank you very much for sharing this! There is so much in my life that makes sense now. One strategy that sometimes works for me is to first listening to sad music, watching my emotions closely. While listening and watching my emotions I imagine a compassionate person looking at me from a distance. When I think that I suffered enough I slowly change to more positive music to cheer myself up. I’m not sure if that would work for everyone. It’s just a method that I discovered some years ago and that works for me to a certain degree.
