'That ugly game': an Iraqi war survivor reflects on the invasion of Ukraine

Mazin Alhaidari lived through more than two and a half decades of war and sanctions in his native Baghdad, Iraq, before settling in the Sacramento area in 2008.
Those experiences have led him to avoid news reports about the war in Ukraine, but is sympathetic to the suffering of people who are dying and facing sanctions. Alhaidari describes war as being between politicians and governments, and not benefiting regular people in any way.
“I don’t want anybody to face what we faced before,” he said from his Carmichael home.
Alhaidari offered reflections on his own experiences in light of the war in Ukraine and lessons he has learned.

This is really inspiring! We need to be gentle when we criticize ourselves. In the US, I see people getting mad over superficial things and eventually they say we are depressed! Facing the threat of death is the true enemy. Surviving horrible events in different places in the world make problems in the US like a joke. Thanks for sharing your story. It sheds a light of hope and love for us.

This is a beautiful, well-made story of our neighbor, this Iraqi man -- I was surprised and happy, as a longtime CapRadio subscriber, to see this deeply satisfying, tiny story of a happy man in his new home in Carmichael. SACRAMENTO is filled with refugees who love their new lives in the city. This was a very well done project. I lived many years in Sacto with my husband - he at UCDMC and I at Kaiser. Now I live in Ecuador. Thank you, videomakers. Please share more of these vignettes soon! This one could be called "an Iraqi morning !"
