That time Lego made a Command and Conquer game...

Ойындар

Did you know that almost 15 years ago Lego made a Command and Conquer game where you could fight aliens on Mars as Santa Claus? Mars Mission Crystal Alien Conflict was an RTS game developed by 4T2 games modeled off of the old Command and Conquer series.
I've been wanting to talk about this gem for well over a year now and with one of my subscribers (shout out to Shrek Snow) telling me about the Godot port of this game I figured there'd be no better time to cover it than now.
Thanks to 4T2 games for making the original. It was a big part of my childhood. I love this game all these years later. Really it's fun check it out...

I’d argue that Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds that you mention at the beginning was more inspired by Age of Empires, right down to the fact that it was made off of AOE2’s engine and is, pretty much, just Age of Empires 2 with a Star Wars coat of paint, moreso than any C&C game. Regardless of that though; solid video. Loved this game growing up, and seeing it mentioned here again after years is… whew, nostalgia hit me hard. Edit; This web game ALSO went into Lego Battles, their Nintendo DS game, which included Pirates, Mars Mission, and Castle sets and themes.

This is pretty much my first RTS. I remember playing this game when I was little. I had so much fun and it was my favorite game at the time and I played it very often! I realized that I liked building your own base and army and then go attack the enemies', which I learned later that it is called a RTS. Funny, at the time I never even heard of Command and Conquer then. I learned of Command and Conquer rummaging through my Dad's cd jewel cases and found "Command and Conquer: Tiberian Sun." I was hooked! It was like RTS was tuned up to 11! And there is where my Command and Conquer Journey started. I wonder, considering Open RA, if there will be a Mars Mission mod? Not Lego style of course.

@@RemTheInsominiac Yeah, but that was an entirely separate game. LEGO Battles was a single game that had medieval, pirates, and space themes for a total of 6 campaigns that had 15 levels each. By comparison, LEGO Battles Ninjago had one theme, two campaigns, and while each campaign had more levels than the campaigns in the original, there were far fewer total levels. On top of that, it completely removed the concept of armies. Your units consisted of seven or so named characters. Plus, the multiplayer had significantly worse performance than the original LEGO Battles. I loved the Ninjago theme, but that game was a disappointment as both a LEGO Ninjago game, and as a LEGO Battles game. Ninjago would've been better off following the standard LEGO game formula instead of being a worse version of LEGO Battles.

An interesting tidbit about this game is how it's not the only Lego RTS to use this theme. Lego Battles, a dedicated RTS game they made for the DS, (Which basically plays like starcraft.) had 6 factions based on 3 different product lines Lego sold at the time, with Mars Mission being one of those lines. During the game's development, the original plan was to have three games, each one containing two factions, to encourage players to buy multiple copies and trade units like pokemon. They ended up scrapping this idea just for the final game having all the factions together, but this flash game did kind of serve as a visualization of what it would look like if one of those 3 planned games released on its own.

the funny thing is if it werent for this game I will never have even thinking of playing Command & Conquer 3 & Red Alert 3 in the first place. back then my parents was very strict on me playing video games as they want me to focus on studying but the leeway is they allow me use the family computer and there is where i used up my time playing online games from miniclip, nickelodeon & lego. lego was the most time I spend time in. after a while i was able to skip classes and go to a nearby cybercafe and there was an advertisement on C&C 3 plastered on the glass door & i was like what is that and booting the game i was hooked as it feels similar to the Mars Mission game and everything is history then.

God what I wouldnt give for lego to make a PC RTS at some point. If they dont want that, at least a remake of Lego Battles.. RTS games have been one of my favorites ever since I was a kid, and lego being one of my favorite brands, it was a match made in heaven for me. Shame they havent done anything like this recently.. and might not ever..

I should really get around to playing this. The original was a lot of fun (although, the two factions were pretty much reskins of each other. Luckily, the campaigns had different scenarios). Wasn’t aware a Santa mission existed. I should try that out. Let’s hope that someone’s crazy enough to remake Lego Battles. That game was a lot of fun. Since Lego seems to be fine with this and Manic Miners (Rock Raiders remake), I’m sure they wouldn’t care about someone remaking a DS exclusive rts. Speaking of C&C I wish there was a Lego theme for it. Yes, I know it wouldn’t make much sense because rts games are super niche and Lego supposedly has those violence rules (Megablocks would be a more realistic contender for this purely fictional scenario). I’m sure that someone could make a bunch of cool MOCs based on the vehicles. If anyone is reading this on Bricklink there’s this program called Studio that’s basically the unofficial continuation of Lego Digital Designer. Please make this a “reality” using that. If Lego were to put out some Prequel/Clone Wars era droid vehicle sets I’d buy them yesterday. ESPECIALLY if there was a big model for the Lucrehulk (I’d buy it from AliExpress since that’s so much cheaper. Be sure to get the ones with good reviews because they’re less likely to be missing pieces, and the colors will be more accurate).

Do you think you’ll use the Studio program from Bricklink to make C&C MOCs, or probably not? It would be cool if some crazy person made a C&C Lego fan game where the buildings would put themselves together, damaged units would be missing pieces, and other things you’d expect form a Lego game. I wish that Lego would make more rts games. Battles was a lot of fun for what it was and so was Crystal Alien Conflict. The closest we’ve gotten to a Lego rts in recent years would be those large battles in the Clone Wars Lego game. I wish they’d bring that feature back in others. You’re welcome! It’s too bad the other fan version isn’t working. What are some other videos you think you’ll make?

I remember when SP first came out I was apprehensive because I loved Mars Mission so much but in time I came to love it even more than Mars Mission. Really all the space themes were fantastic except for the last ones for me. I never liked Alien Conquest or Galaxy Squad ai felt they looked way too 'modern' with the bright colors and all. I mean they were cool but just wasn't a fan personally. I think around then Lego was changing up alot of stuff.

Now this takes me back. I played this a lot on their website back in the day. I remember the secret level where you controlled the Alien Commander. The opening text for that level read “I’m all out of bubblegum” Of course, it wasn’t until years later I realised what they had done. They had put a Duke Nukem reference in a game aimed at children. That’s *#£!ing awesome! I like to think this game paved the way for Lego Battles on the DS. That game plays more akin to Warcraft/Starcraft but it’s a worthy successor to this flash game. It even unlocks Santa as a playable character when your DS calendar reads December 25th.

This game was my childhood. I played this game excessively growing up and remembered trying to recreate the units in it with pipe cleaners and popsicle sticks as I couldn't afford the majority of the sets. One thing I would like to mention was the alien faction wasn't there on initial launch so the game in fact went through a few updates or expansions! I think there was a time where if you use the cheatcode to skip forward a level after the last level you are able to start playing the alien campaign missions from the human side, some missions were kind of fun or easy, but others were completely broken.
