The call aside - it takes massive balls to bounce back from something so negative - especially when we are talking about possibly the most grueling race in all of swimming. Congratulations Owen!

Doesn't take balls at all. Why would it take balls? No one was blaming him. No one was saying anything bad about him. "Balls" is not the right word.

Massive balls? To swim? You must live a privileged life🥺
Just saw the previous video and was extremely anguished. I feel fine now XD

@@wolverineiscool7161 He came 5th in the nation? I can't think of anything I did in college that only 4 other college students in my time could do better. That's about 4 in 19 million. Or 0.00002%.
He got fifth in Nationals!

Pretty good
I remember at a track meet in high-school my friend forgot his jersey so I let him use mine to throw(shotput) and the ref disqualified me because I took my jersey off to help out my friend. Some rules are silly but it about how you bounce back great stuff!
But he still doesnt get his ACC title which he earned.

That's so sad and wrong. I can understand if he went into a lane with someone still swimming in it. But he didn't. Sounds like they need to make the rule be do not celebrate anything until the whole race is over. This is heartbreaking to not be 1st with a record swim Owen had. Not just a personal best but all-time record. I swam more for fun. Then I was pressured by the coach who was my PE teacher. She knew about my swimming history at a different school. When you're a fingertip away, in practice of matching your teammate (6"6') and yells at you (5"4') in front of everyone, that I did whatever a second too slow, it just ruins it for you.
Would he have won with the time he set during his DQ meet?

No, but he would've placed top 3 with the time that got nulled from the DQ
he won, and the old crook was jealous of his well earned joy
Glad bro took his get back
And that was the mile.
Reinstate his W already...

Owen is a humble beast!

@@karlmckinnell2635 "Interference" is a judgement call in swimming: "Any competitor who interferes with another swimmer during a race shall be disqualified from that race, subject to the discretion of the referee." - Article 1.a of NCAA rules As an active NCAA swimmer, who has been in the sport 15 years, this is the first time I've seen this sort of ruling. Crossing lanes/splashing is super common during celebrations once the people next to you are done. So even though it is at the officials discretion, it was definitely a power trip

He didn't mess up anything. The rules are written too vague without the intent explicitly stated and a referee used that loophole to lash out on him. The rules exist to prevent those from interfering with swimmers. He has ever done that.

@@bigdaddynero💯 I just posted that the word discretionary in the NCAA rules are is an open door for controversy. Ridiculous that they even have a rule that contains the word discretionary isn’t it?
How was this bouncing back. 5th last whats the difference. Hey kids don't join the swim team, they got some FUKD up rules
5th is not redemption, I'm sorry
It may be a dumb rule but he needed to follow it like all other swimmers.
My stars….if the rule is no lane crossing whilst others competitors are still swimming, then, despite the heartbreak for Owen, disqualifying him was just. He should have remained in his lane. I’m willing to bet he won’t ever repeat the violation. ❤️🐈

So any rule or law is automatically ‘just’? Because I call bs on that, I can think of quite a few laws and rules throughout the ages that were unjust, this is clearly one of them….it should only be enforced if it interferes with an active swimmer
LOL should have done something cooler than swimming anyhow.

At some point we as a society lost track of the fact that one of the reasons we teach our children about sports is to teach them discipline and how to control their emotions. It isn't supposed to be about winning, or entertaining the masses. Not until you get to the pro level, anyway. That's just the bonus you get if you happen to be the best performer on any given day. He was so excited and proud that he won that he lost control of his emotions, forgot the damn rules, and acted in an undisciplined manner. The shame of his being dq'ed from that other race is not that it was a bad call, it wasn't. It's that the ref had to teach him a lesson his coaches should have drilled into him from the beginning. STAY IN YOUR LANE.

It is a bad call, because he didn't interfere with any other swimmer. The lane he fell into was his teammate's who was already done. If he'd fallen into an active lane, then fine, but it's still a bullshit call. He didn't forget the rules. He straddled the lane line like so many do, slipped, and fell the wrong way. If he falls back into his own lane, he gets the win he deserved.
