'That's a Conscience Matter' - The Voice Jehovah's Witnesses Ignore

Jehovah's Witnesses are taught that they have an inner voice that guides them through life, helping them make decisions and can make you feel good or bad about yourself. What is the voice in their head? Where did it come from and how do I make sure mine works right? Should I trust this voice? What is a 'conscience matter' … and does it even matter?

This certainly brings memories back, being a JW can seriously mess you up. I saw a recent indoctrination video about the voice in the head. When the voiice in the head of the student said 'no'' she was told not to contemplate that voice and carry on with the study and hopefully it will then turn into a 'yes'. Happy holidays.

Stacey I remember as a kid we went to see a kick ass movies, once inside we saw a elders wife and the daughter. 40 minutes into the movie she got up with the daughter and left the movie theater because if got violent for her . We looked at each other and sure enough we also left. Thank God because she saw at the movie theater and at next meeting she came to us with the “conscience jigg “

I once got intensely grilled by an Elder for recording and watching the *edited, network tv version* of the original "Terminator" movie. I was ordered to erase the vcr tape (this was the late 80s) and never watch it again, because 'Christians don't view violence.' This same Elder loved Westerns. I pointed out to him that virtually every Western he watches has violent, shoot 'em up scenes, so what's the difference between his violent Westerns and my edited, "violent" sci-fi movie? His answer: his movies are based on history, Terminator is science fiction, so the violence is different. You can't make this kind of JW hypocrisy up.

In hushed tones, a conscience matters, A Voice, Jehovah's Witnesses ignore. Whispers, like autumn leaves that scatter, A plea for truth, a call to explore. Within the heart, a tug of war, Between beliefs, faith's constant chore. Yet silenced is that inner roar, When dogma's chains bind evermore. A Voice, Jehovah's Witnesses ignore, In search of light, the soul implores. Unheard cries upon the floor, A longing heart, it still adores. But blinded eyes, they cannot see, The souls in pain, longing to be free. For in the shadows, truth may flee, A voice suppressed, 'neath tyranny. Oh, let the conscience break its chains, And let the heart embrace what pains. For in the quest for truth remains, A chance to grow, to break the reins. So heed the call, that inner Voice, In seeking truth, let hearts rejoice. For in the end, it's our own choice, To find the path where souls find poise.

The fact that the organization has its own rules that are NOT biblical, and your conscience can NOT over-ride these rules without being shamed/"marked" (celebrating Christmas/birthdays, beard, dyed hair, if you turn up in jeans and a white t-shirt etc) ... shows it's a cult. One hallmark of a cult is demanding members follow arbitrary and meaningless rules. These kinds of rules weed out the critical thinkers.

So many good points in this video.. you nailed it! This video reminded me of an experience I had in jw cult about our conscience. Back when the Notebook came out in theatres a group of "sisters " went to go see the movie, during one of the love scenes 😂 half of the group walked out of the movie and sat In the front area and waited for the movie to end. ( including myself) Thinking back the scene didn't really bother my conscience at all but I thought it should have because we were constantly told not to trust our conscience and not to watch movies with sex scenes and even encouraged to have the the courage to walk out of the movie if it was something that Jehovah would be displeased with. A couple of "sisters" actually belittled me and the others who walked out of the movie and suggested that we were too sensitive and not strong enough spiritually to handle the movie. So ridiculous looking back on the hypocrisy and grey area.

Romans 14:6 was the verse that woke me up. I'd not gone to meetings for years anymore, but I still believed in Armageddon, and I ran across the mention of that verse somewhere. I *KNEW* that was *NOT* in the Bible. I knew my Bible, I had actually read it while a witness. So I dug my Bible out and read the verse. And cried. I sat on the floor of my bedroom, my small 1984 edition black NWT in my hands and cried. It's so crazy, too, because it doesn't really matter - holidays. I never really felt like I'd missed out on things; I didn't care. I didn't know what I'd missed so I didn't know to suffer for it. But. The Bible gives allowance to celebrate, as long as you celebrate to God. At the VERY LEAST that should give ambiguity to the entire matter, but instead the WT has made a rule about it. A rule that will get you disfellowshipped if you break it. A rule that goes AGAINST what the Bible actually says. Not to mention all the countless talks and articles about how terrible it is that the Christendom at large has taken pagan holidays and made them into Christian holidays. In light of Romans 14:6, to celebrate in good conscience if you celebrate to God, that is EXACTLY what Christendom has done. Watchtower was condemning other faiths for doing what Bible instructs us to do, while it was having its followers go against the Bible. For shame.

I'm so sorry Elecyah! YES, that verse condemns everything they do on this subject and it's not a coincidence that they mostly stay away from the book of Romans... and this one reason. @@survivingparadisepodcast Don't be sorry. Yes, it was a grueling moment, but we all go through it, one way or another, don't we? And speaking of the book of Romans, I noticed -- on that very day and moment as I was reading that as if for the first time ever, that only a couple verses down, is the verse about the stumbling block. That is one of the VERY few verses I ever knew by heart as a JW. It got repeated SO OFTEN. It fits the organization's narrative, but verse 6 does not. That realization was a big part of why I cried, why Watchtower fell for me that day. I knew *this* verse by heart; had molded my life around it; worried over countless little things because of it, but had NEVER really seen the verse just a little before it. Certainly had never read, with thought, the whole thing. My mom's favorite go-to is "It's all Bible-based!" "You know so much about Bible!" when she's appealing for me to return. Ohh, the things I want to say in return. But I don't. I bite my tongue. And hope that one day there will be an opening where I *can* say something in a non-threatening way.

Well we had these sp. Pios couple move in when bethel downsized. Burnt out me not thinking paired the dye sister with the sp pio wife. I want to highlight an extremely important point you made: why do JWs assume the worst of Joseph in that he was tempted by Potiphar's wife in the first place? Is it a default setting for a man to cheat on another man's wife merely if the opportunity arises, and that if he "resists", it's because he has a good conscience? It's like saying I "resist" enjoying to spend the contents of an old lady's wallet by not mugging her. It's kind of a low bar for a "clean conscience". Maybe...just maybe...Joseph wasn't tempted in the first place. I am not resisting temptation to mug old people. Some things in life...we just do not want to do. In Genesis 6:6, God regretted making man because he was "mere flesh" (according to God, man was only interested in servicing the flesh at the cost of spirituality). Hold that thought. JWs make the (unconscious?) assumption Joseph is mere flesh (a pivotal character in the bible), and that he "resisted" the temptation, rather than didn't want anything to do with her in the first place. I'd venture that most people would NOT want anything to do with a married person making advances at them. The potential for direct trouble - let alone the potential for smashing up a family - is too great. Plenty of other fish in the sea anyway. A 17 year old Joseph - as you say - was probably just initially scared because it was potentially a really troublesome situation. And just because Potiphar's wife is described as attractive - it does not mean Joseph found her attractive. If I were in his shoes, I'd have "noped out" too. Not a scintilla of arousal, just my legs making a cartoon-like circular whirring motion as a I rocket out of the house as fast as possible. But JWs think Joseph wrestled with his fleshly libido and won. What?! Do JWs love insulting bible characters or something? I can only take from this that JWs have set the bar of a "clean conscience" so low, that it might even be said that everyday I refuse the opportunity to wreck a family or commit a crime is me practicing a "clean conscience". It's like the very opposite of "evil exists when good men do nothing". The JWs invert that and say "good men are good men BECAUSE they do nothing". Joseph did nothing. He just noped out of a bad situation that was imposed upon him - as much (again, as you say) for self-preservation as anything else. Certainly, him being caught in an affair with a jailer's wife would have meant jail or death (probably the latter). "You wanna get your end away and risk death?". Who raises their hand to that proposition? Who even would consider it? It would be more like "this convo never happened and I am not talking to you again". That's what a sensible Joseph did. It was a practical decision, not a "good conscience" one. In conclusion, this is another example of JWs being obsessed with sex. B-b-b-b-but Potiphar's wife was ATTRACTIVE you see! So NATURALLY, Joseph was tempted, you see! This says much more about JWs than Joseph. For them, it's all seen through the lens of sexual temptation.

This podcast strikes a sensitive chord with me, because I was disfellowshipped over a matter of conscience! I've commented on this in some of your other broadcasts, Stacy; so I apologize for the "re-appearance"!😄 Because I have researched so extensively on whether there was scriptural grounds for my expulsion; I have memorized a half dozen key scriptures in which the foremost apostles of Christ warned Christians about on this matter of conscience. I will soon be mailing a slew of letters to the hypocrites at JW HQ on this subject; and you think that their letting up on their treatment of fellowshipped ones is over; think again people. Hundreds, if not thousands of members are writing the Society exposing the unscriptural, unloving manner in which their "one size fits all" treatment of people they deem as worthy of DF'ing; is WRONG AND NOT CHRIST LIKE!! The apostle Paul wrote at Romans 14: 2-12, to "welcome the man having weaknesses in his faith; but not to make decisions on inward questionings."......"Who are you to judge the house servant of another?.....One man judges one day as above another,....let each man be fully convinced IN HIS OWN MIND." (Not fully convinced by someone else's mind!)...Verse 10: " but why do you judge your brother? Why do you also look down on your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgement seat of God!".... 1 Corinth. 4: 3, ..Paul again went on to say, "As for me, it is a very trivial matter that I should be examined by you or a human tribunal. (i.e. "today's judicial committees of elders!). I am not conscious of anything against myself." (Obviously, his conscience did not condemn him!).....yet by this I am not proved righteous, but he that examines me is Jehovah.".....Hence do not judge anything before the appointed time........remember the rule, '" Do not go beyond what is written"!! (That includes the elder's "flock" book manual!!) Timothy 5: 21,....."I solemnly charge you, (elders) to keep these things without pre-judgement, doing NOTHING according to a biased leaning."!!!! James 4: 11, 12,......"Quit speaking against one another, brothers. He who speaks against a brother and judges his brother, speaks against and judges law. ......One there is that is lawgiver and judge. So who are you to be judging your neighbor?" There are more, but I've said enough for now! 😅 I hope JW PIMO's or just casual inquirers see this.

Anyway, enough of goats! Let’s talk about guilt. As teenager I was a sensitive person and viewed everything coming from the platform that was condemnatory, I took it personally. I was a masturbating sinner who hated field service. My feelings of guilt lead me to believe that I was not worthy of being a JW. Then I discovered alcohol which wiped out the guilt temporarily. Anyhoo you have a great break away from this Stacey - miss ya already!

Man was made with a conscience, that’s why Adam only knew good and evil and had a conscience after he ate from the tree that God didn’t want him to eat from… Also, a good conscience isn’t a social construct or group ability, that’s why you need to study and socialize with only JWs to have a good conscience…. Also, you can only have a good conscience like Joseph if you study the Bible, which didn’t exist when Joseph was alive…

Interesting their choice of words (which is never coincidental) they liken conscience to a compass which doesn't actually stear the ship, the rudder does. The compass simply indicates where you're going. So, they set up following what they say. If we say do this or that, you stear accordingly. But what happens if that compass is off? What if your whole being tells you you're going the wrong way, even though the compass shows the contrary? Well folks,.that's how we actually ignore our conscience for what the 10 guys behind the curtain tell us is right or wrong. So, I'm going up on stage tonight to give a part, should I wear that pink, red, or blue dress shirt, or should I play it safe and go with the white one? Will the elders drag me to the backroom? Will a colored shirt take attention away from Jehovah? Will Jehovah be offended? Are my side burns or moustache too long? I mean I'm not sure, if you're hispanic or black they won't say anything to you about sideburns or staches, but I'm white...so will Jehovah be offended by my moustache length? Ugh, so many conscience decisions to be made and I don't wanna risk losing everlasting life because my sideburns were too worldly! Bedlam!!!!!

Pick up sticks! We used to play the game in the 70’s. An early form of jenga… Let me tell you a true story - from the local newspaper in Zim, there was a story of a man who wronged his neighbour’s goat! Basically he got kinda horny and decided to shag the goat! He got so carried away with his actions, he killed the goat by strangling the poor creature by its neck that he was using for traction! The judge ruled that owner of the deceased goat should be compensated for the cost of his loss!
