"Lulled him into a true sense of security" now that was a good one

@tm3008

@@saya7292 The normal expression is 'Lulled him into a FALSE sense of security' meaning that he believes you to be a friend (but you are not). Here Jim changes the idiom into 'Lulled him into a TRUE sense of security' meaning that Sir Humphrey Appleby was an idiot (which in this case he was) . He was an idiot for trusting his colleague who was someone not to be trusted- he was a spy for the Soviets.

Arnold is a terrifying figure for the full might of practised, intelligent, validated and rewarded cynicism. As much as his like must be respected and definitely heard, one mustn't carelessly condone this, something Hacker ineptly but on some level consistently understands. There is something fundamentally contrary to the best sides of life in that darkly monolithic mindset.

There is such a thing as having too much of a good thing. Arnold is a superbly well written/acted character but if he used too often than 1 of 2 things would have to happen: 1. Arnold always outsmarts every other character, and it will be seasons of "Arnold and the fools" which is very very boring. 2. In order to prevent 1, they dumb down Arnold which in turn ruins his character. Both are bad. So, the best case is to use him small doses.
' Lulled him into a true sense of security' absolutely brilliant writing 😂

Sir Arnold. The sharpest knife in the box. Didn’t answer to anyone, not even the pm.
RIP John Nettleton (Sir Arnold) (5 February 1929 - 12 July 2023)
Arnold really was a smooth operator, its no wonder he had disdain for humpy.
This scene makes Sir Arnold look like a soviet spy. He NEEDS Jim and Humpy working together and, at zero hour, a mysterious diary entry is found. Almost too convenient. And the wording is something you'd expect someone who knows Humpy to say.

It wouldn't make sense that Sir Arnold is a soviet spy just from this scene; after all, he's just bringing the information from MI5, as Humphrey's superior. Even in the context of this show, Sir Arnold is the ultimate civil servant insider, it wouldn't make sense for him to fabricate something that he personally hands over to Hacker.
One of the most convincing transformations this show pulled off was raising the intellectual minimum bar to astronomical levels, to the point where a character as obscenely intelligent as Sir Humphrey could be portrayed, given the right circumstances, as a goof (sic), did not break the theme or the presentation of the show.
My friend recommended this show to me and said that it is "arguably the best". I disagree with him, as the use of the word "arguably" is unfair. THIS IS *THE* BEST SHOW EVER MADE. No counter arguments accepted.
The comedic timing of both of these actors is delightfully perfect. The mis-speaks, hesitations, and 'cogs-turning' helps lift the highly crafted script.
Eddington was a genius. It's a shame that there weren't more scenes like this that showed off how much of the show is owed to him.
