The drummer wrote 95% of the lyrics from 18 of their 19 studio albums over their 40+ years careers! Not only was he a phenomenal drummer he was a true poet with most of their lyrics! RIP Neil!

Neil Peart the drummer was also the main lyrist for the band. He was a private and shy person who felt uncomfortable with all that came with fame. what you were talking about is time signatures. Rush were the masters of smooth transitions from one time change to another. I would suggest La Villa Strangiato official music video. It is one of their masterpieces. Cheers

Funny story about this video, I had a dog that would sit and watch the whole thing. At the very beginning you see a german shepard walk into frame and run off. My dog used to run to the tv looking for the dog. She would sit and watch the whole thing and run up to the tv when the dog comes back at the end.

With RUSH you don't hear the music, you feel it. The guitar solo is how they feel on tour. Meeting people they have never seen but are expected to know. It's a haunting solo.

Limelight is my favourite Rush song because I really love how the emotional expression in Geddy's voice and Alex's guitar solo beautifully bring out Neil's lyrical expression of his discomfort with life in the public eye. He was an introvert as I am, whose traits are commonly misinterpreted as shyness, but simply reflect our need for time to ourselves to recharge our mental energy; he also struggled with anxiety issues stemming from a near-drowning incident at the age of 10, as recalled in his book Travelling Music, and in an online article from Rolling Stone Magazine. Their song Freewill is another excellent example of what a gifted musician and lyricist he was behind the barriers he'd put up to keep himself intact; and if you'd like to put the above comment about it being better to the test, I recommend the Exit Stage Left performance. Cheers from Canada! 🇨🇦 🎤 🎹 🎸 🥁 🎸 🔥 🔥 🔥

Rush is one of my all times favorites. Teddy Lee absolutely had the biggest voice in the tiniest body, Neil was an absolute genius songwriter and one of the greatest drummers to pick up sticks, and Alex Lifeson is just absolutely stellar on guitar. I couldn’t get over it when I learned they were just a trio. I told my dad they were a “wall of sound”.❤❤❤ At the end of the day they were use 3 Canadian potheads who liked using, D&D and each other. They were best friends and band mates for somewhere around 35 years before we lost Neil a couple of years ago. It sucks that I’ll never see them again but I’m lucky I got to see them live 3 times. Every single time was 3 hours of magic.

I had all of their albums through the 70's, to about the mid 80's. Grace Under Pressure was the last I bought...but I continued listening to them. Ever since hearing Working Man on the radio...I have loved this band. I even had their Caress of Steel album.♥

This song is about how people that are thrust into fame are often SHY around the FANS because the FANS have more knowledge of you than you have of them. So you build barriers to deal with being famous... Peart has some of the most thoughtful and poignant lyrics - so when you listen to the MUSIC - you need to also really listen to the LYRICS and what he is trying to say....

That "skipping ' that you hear is a time signature shift. In this case the verses are in repeating measures of 4 and 3, or 7/4 and the chorus shifts smoothly into 6/8 and then building out of it for 8 bars of 4/4 ( the only time we hear the more standard 4/4 is in those crescendo sections, haha)

Greatest band ever. I love watching them, but you also need to know the lyrics. So you have to listen to it over & over (lol). You have to watch La Villa Strangiato. It's an instrumental. Neil Peart (drummer) - watch any of his drum solos. Working Man (live in Cleveland), Natural Science (need words to this), Spirit of Radio, Subdivisions. If you're new to Rush, you're going to get a lot of Rush fans (including me) coming here suggesting all kinds of stuff.

Rush is the masters of changing time signatures on a whim in mid song. they will go from 3/4 time to 4/4 time in a single phrase then back to 3/4 time. It is called knowing your craft.

you're thinking of "Odd Meter" time. Most popular songs are in 4/4 or 3/4, counting 1,2,3,4 1,2,3,4 or 1,2,3 1,2,3 etc. Rush likes to throw in plenty of 5 and 7 beat long bars (or measures) tripping up the impulse to feel the time in more "even", common patterns.
