Neil had an aversion to strangers, which made the "being famous" thing, very difficult for him. The line "I can't pretend a stranger is a long-awaited friend" is the realist lyric ever.

For me, this is Alex Lifeson’s greatest guitar solo of all their songs. And that’s saying something, because Big Al has only ever delivered amazing guitar sounds throughout his career.

That melancholy sound in Alex guitar solo gets me every time. Not playing a ton of notes, but very emotional and beautiful. Fitting for this song.

Wouldn't be surprised if this was in I Love You Man. It's been a long time since I saw that movie but one of the main things I remember was the two lead actors bonding over their shared love of Rush.

Thanks for reacting to this classic song! It's one of my favorites for both lyrics and musicality. I suggest watching a live performance from Rush; it's amazing to watch them in that context. My personal favorite lately is their live performance in Dallas of 'Where's My Thing? Here it Is'. The song is an instrumental that really shows off everyone's skills (there is a drum solo in the middle). The instrumentals are just relentless throughout and by the end, I felt like I'd run a marathon!

Flashbacks of hs in Chgo 😁. Carnivals had this great ride that was basically a short circle of rollercoaster cars that would whip around, first forward then stop and reverse, then forward again. They blasted music as it went around and they always played Tom Sawyer. Good times! When Coheed and Cambria came out I was like, what am I hearing?? They're a perfect combo of Rush and Pink Floyd! Fun fact Cliff: Rush fans were called Rats. So I was a Rat back then and now Im a Sewer Rat in the AoD 🤣🐁⚔️

Part of the reason for Neil's discomfort with life in the public was because he was an introvert as I am, whose traits are often misinterpreted as shyness, but simply reflect our need for time to ourselves to recharge our mental energy; he also struggled with anxiety issues stemming from a near-drowning incident at the age of 10, as recalled in his book Travelling Music and in an online article from Rolling Stone Magazine. "One must put up barriers to keep oneself intact" refers to how we introverts need to set boundaries to protect our mental energy for what's inportant to us; "I can't pretend a stranger is a long awaited friend" refers to how we need time to establish a meaningful connection with someone before we can feel comfortable allowing them into our personal space; and the chorus speaks to how extroverts mainly crave the spotlight and think that they need to act like they're someone else to attract a large crowd of followers, while we mainly prefer to work in the background, follow our own internal motivators, and seek authenticity in ourselves and others. As another excellent example of how gifted he was behind the barriers he'd put up to keep himself intact, I second the above recommendation for La Villa Strangiato, particularly the Live in Rio performance. Cheers from Canada! 🇨🇦 🎤 🎹 🎸 🥁 🎸 🔥 🔥 🔥

Neil was notoriously uncomfortable with adulation and this was his take on the trials of being famous, this was also one of Alex's favorite solos to perform live. Try the live in Montreal version of Free Will next if you haven't done so yet, great lyrics and they all solo at the same time. 😊

If you don't mind a bit of a long video, check out Rush's 2112. The story goes that their label told them to make a shorter song to get on the radio... so they came up with a track they introduced live as "side one of our latest album."

Great reaction! I know you're a lyricist and like to analyze bars, but Rush has some really awesome instrumentals. If you are willing, there's one that Alex (Lifeson, the guitarist) wrote based on a dream sequence and is presented in several movements. It's called, "La Villa Strangiatta" (the unusual way) Please check it out, if you will.

We knew exactly what you meant - there’s three measures in the transition from the chorus to the verse where they go to half-time feel. It lulls you, but it’s only for a few seconds before they switch back. Most of the guitar solo is in half-time, as well, and I love how Geddy and Neil switch back while Alex is still sustaining those soaring notes. The rhythm guitar comes back in two measures later, and they drive it all the way home. Just a perfect song. Give Freewill a try if you want to hear an incredible “guitar solo” that is more of a 3-way musical explosion. Cheers!

Hey Cliff, love you brother. If you want to contInue down the Rush rabbit hole, please consider YYZ. It is an instrumental, so no lyrics to break down. The song does speak volumes without words though. YYZ is an international airport code for Toronto. For Rush, YYZ means home. And they are such crazy musicians that they play parts of the song in Morse code.

Live Rush is the best Rush. If you get to La Villa Strangiato you should watch the live version from Rush in Rio. No lyrics, but Alex (the guitarist) does have a rant towards the end of it.

To me this encapsulates all the very best aspects of Rush. It rocks. The musiciansh is crazy good, the melodies are emotional and memorable, the lyrics utterly profound. Its a song in 7 and still was a top five rock hit.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND "Tom Traubert's Blues (4 Sheets to the Wind in Copenhagen)" by Tom Waits (Also known as "Waltzing Matilda"). His voice is so unique that one critic once described it as though "it was soaked in a vat of bourbon, left hanging in the smokehouse for a few months and then taken outside & run over with a car"! He's a well-regarded & respected songwriter from within the "Rock" genre from the 70's & 80's. I'd LOVE to hear your take on his signature song. Great reaction! Such a well-written track in every aspect. My favourite part of this song musically is Geddy going off on bass during the instrumental section and Neil's fills at the end. Just love it. Lyrically, to me the best part is the nuance (many reactors miss, being so focused on the organized chaos) between those who wish to SEEM acting a certain way and those who wish to BE acting a different way. Neil was definitely someone who always wished to BE, and that really spoke to me as a young man who also wanted to just BE but felt out of place. Amazing stuff.
