Thanks for the memory (Leo Robin/Ralph Rainger) - Shirley Ross and Bob Hope (The Big Broadcast of 38)

Thanks for the memory
Of rainy afternoons, swingy Harlem tunes
And motor trips and burning lips and burning toast and prunes
How lovely it was!
Thanks for the memory
Of candlelight and wine, castles on the Rhine
The Parthenon and moments on the Hudson River Line
How lovely it was!
Many's the time that we feasted
And many's the time that we fasted
Oh, well, it was swell while it lasted
We did have fun and no harm done
And thanks for the memory
Of sunburns at the shore, nights in Singapore
You might have been a headache but you never were a bore
So thank you so much.
Thanks for the memory
Of sentimental verse, nothing in my purse
And chuckles when the preacher said "For better or for worse"
How lovely it was
Thanks for the memory
Of lingerie with lace, Pilsner by the case
And how I jumped the day you trumped my one-and-only ace
How lovely it was!
We said goodbye with a highball
Then I got as "high" as a steeple
But we were intelligent people
No tears, no fuss, Hooray! For us
So, thanks for the memory
And strictly entre-nous, darling how are you?
And how are all the little dreams that never did come true?
Aw'flly glad I met you, cheerio, and toodle-oo
And thank you so much.

For some reason, when Shirley Ross sings "awfully glad I met you" very near the end of the song, that's when the tear ducts open up for me. Anyone else feel the same way?

So, it's like 1981 and I'm new to New York, and I see Leo Robin do Lyrics and Lyricists at the 92nd Street Y. He's very old and frail, but he's all there, and toward the end of the evening he tells this story: He and Ralph Rainger are working on The Big Broadcast of 1938 at Paramount, and the producer tells them, you have to write this duet, it's for a sophisticated New York couple who still love each other but broke up, and it has to have lots of jokes but still be touching... They wonder, how are we going to do this, but they go to their office and write this, and come back and audition it, and the producer, who's going through a divorce, starts weeping. So they figure, we guess we did this right. Then they get an Oscar. Then Mr. Robin sings the whole thing, in a whisper, and by the time he gets to So strictly entre nous, Darling, how are you, and how are all those little dreams that never did come true, I'm a puddle. And I think, yes, this is why I came to New York.

To say this is nostalgia at its peak is an understatement. My late wife and I shared most everyone of these memories, just missed out on Singapore, the Great Wall of China and lipstick on my tie. They’re my memories now. Nice to hear them set to beautiful music and think back on a life well lived. My dreams did come true, but still, I thank her for the memories.

This wasn’t just singing it was a complete performance. How I wish Bob Hope had been paired in more films with Shirley Ross

There are so many classic scenes in movies but imho this is one of the very best. The song itself, so full of images, the way they sing it, their reactions to the lyrics and their emotions are just perfect. And it seems spontaneous, like it was never even rehearsed, not even once. Just beautiful.

I'm 56. Bob was in the middle/late range of his career when I was a child. So I did pick up through childhood osmosis that there was some "Thanks for the Memories" part of his identity/history. This is the first time I found out why.

So many people from my generation never realized that this song began life as a duet between a divorced couple remembering their marraige

I work at a small town movie theater as a side job. Due to the recent CoVid-19 outbreak, a lot of small town businesses are going out. Our theater was one of them.

I don't know why Shirley Ross wasn't a bigger star - she certainly gives a wonderful performance here.

Can never see this w/out tearing up. A masterpiece. Mitch Leisen told Robin & Rainger, "Well, it's not what I expected...but we can use it."

"Apparently, director Mitchell Leisen was having trouble setting the right tone for a scene between the amicably divorced couple Bob Hope and Shirley Ross; Robin and Rainger attempted to convey that the two were still in love without saying so, while maintaining a light tone.
