Thank You, James: A Grateful Farewell to Prison Fellowship President and CEO James J. Ackerman

Members of Prison Fellowship’s senior leadership team share their favorite memories and best wishes of retiring President and Chief Executive Officer James J. Ackerman. When God brought James to Prison Fellowship in 2016, the ministry needed a turnaround in both mission and culture. We had to transition from being led by-and known for-our founder Chuck Colson, who passed away in 2012, to being known for our work and our mission.
What the Lord has accomplished at Prison Fellowship, especially through the challenges of the last few years, far surpasses anything we could have envisioned when James came on board. Our work has remained rooted in the truth and the hope of the Gospel. With the generous support of our partners, we have been serving prisoners and families in states where we once had no ministry presence. Now prisoners line up for applications because they see something “different” about the men and women in these programs.
Today Prison Fellowship is in an amazing position to build on that legacy of restoration, and our partners and volunteers can be excited about the direction in which we are headed. We are embracing a strong vision to bring transformative ministry to every prison in the country-and the only way to do that is to engage the Church, which was Chuck’s vision all along.
