Thameslink Trains Between Brighton and Cambridge

The Thameslink Programme arrives, meaning you're now able to catch a train between Brighton and Cambridge, and Peterborough and Horsham .. amongst other destinations coming as they ramp it up and roll out the the new service through London.
It also means passengers trains are going through the new Canal Tunnels for the first time.
We took a ride from Cambridge down into London, through the tunnels and into the 'Core' section, as we drew a map of what new service pattern will look like!

    As someone who doesn't live in England, I find it very useful to have increased direct service from Gatwick Airport to points north of London. This would enhance the convenience of the airport, especially compared with Heathrow. There is a lot of growth in trans-Atlantic flights, especially with low cost carriers such as Norwegian and Wow Air, who are expanding at Gatwick because Heathrow is at capacity.

  • @sihollett

    @sihollett

    6 жыл бұрын

    Gatwick is actually more 'full' (really 'some way beyond the ideal capacity utilisation rate' - both airports keep finding a bit more room each year) than Heathrow. The last year of data sees Gatwick's single runway deal with 285,969 aircraft movements (2.1% growth) and 45.5 million passengers (5.2% growth) while Heathrow's 2 has 475,783 movements (0.2% growth) and 78 million passengers (3% growth) - about 85% less busy than double Gatwick (as Heathrow has double the capacity) on both measures.

    Thank you, thank you, thank you Geoff for this video! My child and I have begun considering universities and university course programs and have always thought Kent to Cambridge is just too tedious to consider but with this new information (which we have watched to the very end), we now know that will NO LONGER be an issue! This is BRILLIANT, as we would like to consider Cambridge as well as Oxford, which we can already get to quickly and easily from Kent on a very regular basis. Why does it matter so much if my child will be as far as Cambridge if he or she is living there anyhow? Well, my child has Asperger’s Syndrome and so being able to get to and from home and back for both of us MUST be factored into this huge decision. This video has opened up a great opportunity now with Ashford connecting to Cambridge twice an hour during peak time from end of this year! This is great! My child has a heart set on Oxbridge and now BOTH may be considered equally! Hurrah!

You are amazing and loved your friend on this video, the blending of the maps, very inspired. Never seen this video before, it came on after a BBC News report about how uncomfortable the seating is on the Thameslink trains. Watched to see if you mentioned this. Due to East Croydon to London Victoria being closed last Thursday, part of a 10 day closure, I made a return journey to St Pancras to get to London from there. I was left in AGONY in the days following that day, including an emergency Osteopath appointment last Saturday. Still in a lot of pain. LOVE every video I see of yours. It is amazing how much the infrastructure's changed since i grew up in Croydon back in the 70's and 80's, back then there were no north/south London crossings at all. Now there are loads of them. Big difference. I have lived down in Devon for many years now so have not witnessed any of the changes myself. No doubt the whole rial network will seem very different to how i remember it with the old slam door trains.

Full load between London Bridge and Finsbury Park only. Light loading between 3 Bridges and Hitchin. Impressive use of ECML. Great alternative route but with a one hour penalty for a Norwich to Brighton day out. We will contrive to use it again on a day out in Chichester or perhaps Lewes. Tom Cat

    The idea of running services through a capital city is hardly a novelty in other countries. Admittedly, it's a smaller capital city, but Line 0 in Brussels was planned in 1909 and opened in 1952. Over 1,200 trains a day, running on six tracks, including international services to France, the UK, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Germany. Regular clock-face services from one side of the country to the other, many going via the country's main airport. International trains linking airports in Paris, Brussels, Frankfurt and Amsterdam. We have some catching up to do in the UK. I can't even catch a train to Heathrow from the south-west of England, even though the line goes right past.

    No mention of what are possibly the most uncomfortable seats on the UK mainline railway together with nowhere to put your (windowside) foot/leg if you sit on the window seat due to the protrusion at floor level. You either sit at an angle, put your foot on top of the protrusion or else sit in a gangway seat. Not a very high score for the design.

    Some much needed useful direct links being created here. One more that's being lost though, if the Luton - Rainham service is replacing the Charing Cross - Gillingham route, is the direct link between Blackheath and Charlton. Lewisham passengers will still be able to access the North Kent Line via the DLR to Greenwich, but it'll be a slower journey. Blackheath will definitely lose out.

    WOW I'm impressed (I'm also a LONG way away now, so makes little difference to me) BUT, I'm wondering, it's always been a nightmare getting from the SW, say Totnes or Paignton to the east coast, Brighton or Cambridge/ Lincolnshire > so is this now possible? And is the change straightforward? I'm asking for my elderly relatives who are losing the will to drive! Very fascinating - would like to see more in-depth of Brighton Station as I saw some behind the scenes during refurbishment some years ago. 👌👍😉 You do a smashing job Geoff Marshall.

    There are a variety of reasons, but in a nutshell: the stuff used at Hitchin is (based on) the BR Mark 3 electrification; lightweight, cheap to put up, but unreliable and not suitable for really fast (125mph+) running. The GWML is getting the new NR Series 1 kit, which should be more reliable than any UK electrification and suitable for 140mph running with multiple pantographs. (More than one pantograph on a train is a big problem due to resonance waves.)

    My current way of getting to uni is Thameslink up to Farringdon, tube to Liv Street, train to Norwich. New way to cut out underground and London expense could be Norwich to Cambridge then change straight onto Thameslink, which I thought would be neat, but I finish in May anyway. The trains are also totally unsuitable for longer distance travel. It's enough of a stretch in the hour and whatever it takes for me to get to Farringdon, but adding Cambridge onto that would be a nightmare, plus no tables to get work done on.

    True! That was connected via a flat junction, though. It was briefly considered for reinstatement in the 1990s, but it would have been a nightmare to have flat junctions at both Kings Cross and Blackfriars.

    Also there would have been no room for a platform long enough for a 12-car Class 700 at Kings Cross, and the northbound platform (Platform 16) has disappeared in the redevelopment of the station. I believe the curvature of the "Hotel Curve" was also too tight for carriages of normal length to get round without hitting the sides.

    Indeed, the old alignment would have been quite inadequate for the current Thameslink, but its still an interesting thing to note. These services aren't new, they're just reinstated.

    Actually the eventual plan for December 2019 has an *increase* in frequency between London and Cambridge. Currently, it's 2tph fast, 1tph semi-fast, 1tph stopping, all from King's Cross. From Dec 2019 it'll be 2tph fast from King's Cross, and 2tph semi-fast, 2tph stopping from St Pancras.

    Thameslink did originally have a Guildford service (via Streatham, West Croydon and Epsom) but it was replaced in 1995 by the current Wimbledon loop service as this was more self-contained and didn't cut across so many of the newly-privatised franchises.

    Not sure what the exact plans for driver training will entail between now and May, there may be more than two trains a day or they may just keep it like that. From the May timetable change there will be an hourly service between Cambridge and Brighton; that will then go up to half-hourly in December 2018. From December 2019 there will also be a half-hourly service between Cambridge and Maidstone East (extending to Ashford in the peaks). No plans for Portsmouth to be served by Thameslink, probably too far from the main routes to be useful.

  • @bigdmcc1

    @bigdmcc1

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yes, it will stop at East Croydon. For now there are only two departures a day to Cambridge, at 12:18 and 15:18; from May this will go up to hourly, and then from December it should be half-hourly. In the meantime, yes, you will probably need to change somewhere. It's also possible that the journey planner is telling you to change at London Bridge because the "preview" services have a long layover at London Bridge (~17 minutes) to fit into the existing timetables - so it's possible you can leave East Croydon later, change at London Bridge and still make the same train. Try clicking the "show overtaken trains" option and see if they show up?
