Nice. I have several tsuka and a James Raw blade mounted by him. Oh yeah, and had him do pretty much the same to my lemon of a shobu raptor. He's a good dude and customization guy.

Lemon Shobu, made me imagine a sword with bright yellow ito and saya. Not a pretty sight.

Glad you did this video. I think Adam is underrated and undeservedly poo-pooed on certain forums.

I’ve seen some people literally send back battle wrap tsukamaki work because it was “done wrong” (even though it was wrapped traditionally, just not the way Chinese forges do it).

Adam worked on my Ronin Dojo Elite and was great to work with, the work he did was stellar too. He’s currently working on my Cold Steel Dragonfly.

Funny you mention trying to save money on handle wraps I just starting to do it myself because I didn't want to pay the prices anymore so I learned from KZread! Japanese video couldn't understand a thing said but the step by step was the best...

Feels good that you're not nitpicking this to death. Have wondered what kind of nagging would ensue if you ever saw one of my rewraps, and glad to see you take it easy in this case with Mr. Novath. Good to hear that the sword is happier now

Calvin and Hobbes comic scene comes to mind: Calvin at lemonade stand, reads "Lemonade, One Million Dollars" Suzie goes "What?! Are you crazy?" Calvin: "Hey, I only have to sell one"

I think their goal is to be a top tier vendor and I think they can be with a little work. It seems like they are moving in the right direction.

Fair enough. They make a poor value proposition currently, tho. If I'm going to overspend on a sword, Citadel or Motohara at least come with a little umbrella in the glass, and a calender of scantily clad Korean pop stars. @@Matthew_Jensen

Speaking of tsuka... somebody on my katanas forum just told me about Cloudhammer using silk instead of same'gawa to wrap the tsuka core on one of their kodachi offerings. First time I heard of something like that. Is that a thing that is semi common in some Japanese swords? Maybe you could do a video on it.

Hello. What do you think about Damascus steel. I like one katana, which made of Damascus. Is it worth? Prise is 150 &.

  • @KF1

Damascus in modern swordmaking is more accurately called "pattern welded steel", and unfortunately it is not the Damascus of Syrian history. Will be less robust than a monosteel option, but still good enough for most targets imo. Expect it to take scratches and a higher likelihood of edge damage. On the other hand, they do look nice

As I'm watching this and seeing the Duke Nukem Picture in the background, I suddenly start remembering the sayings he would say in the game! "Nobody steals our chicks... and lives!" HAHAHAHAHA! Such a good game! The game would have been better if he had a sword, I think. Of course, some of those guns were a lot of fun. Like the shrink ray! You'd shoot the bad guy and he'd shrink and then you'd run over and step on him. I truly hope someone is working on that technology.

In reference to the original video, it's really shocking that Thaisuki can take 3000$ for a sword that just unravels when used. I genuinely consider that a scam. At 3000$ it shouldn't be bulky and falling apart. The fittings shouldn't really be cast either, let alone poorly cast, they should be made properly. The reason is that I can buy secondhand shinsakuto for that price, and then everything would be perfectly fit and good for use, and made traditionally. If I'm buying something from outside Japan, it should be because I get higher quality for lower price. Not shitty quality for the same price. The tsuka being poorly shaped, or the tsuka-ito coming undone is unacceptable, imo. If I buy a very basic iaito from Japan, for like 3-500$, the tsuka has decent taper, and the ito won't come undone. I have many Japanese iaito of varying price ranges, and literally none of their ito have come undone. I have an iaito from the 80s, that has been in regular use since then, and the ito is not even loose. So when I see anything over the price of 800$, there is no excuse for it to come apart. For 3000$ it should be identical to a nihonto, and at least the same quality I can get from Japan. If it's the same quality, then it's having a hard competitor, so ideally it should be better. Why would I buy a reproduction that falls apart when I can just get the real deal for the same price? Well, that's my rant on shameless price gouging for today.

Out of curiosity, what is the material the ito on your iaito made of?

  • @TopLob

    @TopLob

    4 ай бұрын

@@Vlad_Tepes_III I have no idea. That's one of the things people in the west is really focused on, picking all the materials and crafting methods themselves. The Japanese way is to find someone who makes good swords, and let them make those decisions. If they make good decisions, their swords will be known to be good. If you're a martial artist, your speciality is martial arts (presumably). It's not sword smithing. Or else you'd just make your own sword. So my job is really just to know what a good sword should look and feel like. Not the details of its craft.

Agreed with everything you said. You can get some pretty mint condition modern nihonto for ~$3K. Wouldn't buy anything else unless you're after exceptional tameshigiri performance (motohara)
