Thailand cave rescue: Children found ‘by smell’ - BBC News
John Volanthen, from Bristol, was one of a number of foreign expert divers drafted in for the rescue of 12 boys and their football coach who had been trapped in a Thai cave for nine days.
He tells BBC Points West about the moment he and his fellow divers first discovered the children alive.
Mr Volanthen, a member of the South and Mid Wales Cave Rescue Team, said they knew they had found them due to the smell in the cave.

Four years passed and now there is a movie “Thirteen lives”. Once you grasp what they were really facing there it blows my mind they dared going there, that deep, at all. Never mind rescue. It seems there were so many possible ways you could have died there. Being crushed, knock out or trapped by falling material. Trapped by current in some narrow passage (where your physical strength is insufficient to back up). Lose guide rope in strong current and never find way out before hypothermia takes you. Damage vital equipment underwater while navigating obstacles at tight places with strong current and in nil visibility. Not to mention if you navigate unknown passage without seeing anything, how can you be sure you not reach and be surprised suddenly by some super strong current which will take you to some place of no return (as say underground river)? I always imagined cave divers are hard tight to some security rope (hard connected either to wall or other diver), same as rock climbers. I thought similarly as rock climbers (climbing mechanisms) they use some mechanisms allowing them escaping overwhelming current. Guessing in 2.5km rescue operation such measures were simply not viable due to time pressure and length of dive in relation to enormous resources necessary for such things.
This story is not just about saving the boys. This story proves clearly that if people have common goals, together they can achieve an incredible milestone, regardless of the nation, culture, religion, language, political relations. A hope for humanity in case of a common threat

I am thinking the diver who died just pushed himself to the limit, working so hard to save the children that he used his air faster that he expected. Maybe he was accustomed to using a larger tank. So sad.
@esquirexii
6 жыл бұрын
There were hundreds of tanks. The odds that a few were defective, I would think would be pretty high. Damaged in transport. Improperly handled. And of course human error. I hope they find a way to maintain communications with every diver or at least have them never alone. But it will never be free of deadly dangers.

He might just be too exhausted & didn't realised it. He basically lose consciousness as his body couldn't process the oxygen anymore. It would be like sleeping. He got a dive buddy at that time but couldn't save him anymore.
@dontgetmadgetwise4271

His courage is given. But it sounds like a rookie cave diving mistake... a sober warning to all divers in that cave. His loss probably galvanised many to put aside bravado and follow the lessons and meticulous planning of veteran cave divers. Each was braver than me.
@BangtanMyBangtan
6 жыл бұрын
No Gandalf, most probably a miscalculation. He's an ex Navy Seal, so he he would probably be one of those who won't downplay the danger. I did open water diving & one of the most important thing is to be able to read your equipment. With zero visibility & the cold, he would probably thought he was ok until he actually lose consciousness. He might have used more oxygen than usual but didn't realise it. It could also be nitrogen narcosis or other gas toxicity. Remember that this rescue is the first of it's scale. So the divers team might not be aware of the change in their air supply due to the water & cave pressure. Gas toxicity is very dangerous & it's one of the main cause of death among divers.

As the dumb American I am, or at least some of the world thinks we are, I'm smart enough to recognize heroes when I see them. The two British divers who went to lead this effort are unassuming, humble, and true heroes. There are so many thanks to give around the world for support, but these two divers and cave experts from England, along with the Elite Thai Navy Seal who lost his life are at the front. RIP Saman Kuman.

Sorry for my English. In all my life, I have never heard of such a phenomenal achievement. I confess that at first I was very sad and I cried. Because I thought those boys would all die. I'm the father of a 13-year-old boy. Of all the HEROES who participated, I think two deserve special thanks: John Volanthen and Rick Stanton. If it had not been for them, nothing would have been possible. I have no words to describe my admiration.

The divers were very classy and polite...the "smell" they referred to was the fact that for 10days those boys were going to the bathroom in the cave. But the divers never came out and said that outright out of respect for the boys.
Humble and human! Real star!!!

+Jefferey After the training session they visited the cave (not for the first time), the group had an appointment to a birthday party later, so that was not meant to be a long stay. They ignored the sign that warns to stay away from the cave during monsoon saison. I also heard that during the rescue operation the government redirected some rivers (or one river) which bought the team more time. With reducing that input and pumping out the water they could keep water levels lower. So it is possible the torrential rain that fed water into the system and trapped them in the cave was from farther away - it could explain why they went in and were unaware of a great rain coming down - or they were unaware that a downpour could affect them. - Driving to a party in a downpour on their bikes doesn't sound like a good plan, so I guess the weather changed quickly and for them in an unexpected manner. When rising water cut them off the front part of the cave (that can surprise even experienced cave explorers) they retracted further and further into the cave. Most of the boys cannot swim, never mind the divers also mentioned strong currents. So no way to escape but into the cave - they moved/crawled along when the space was not yet under water and they had lights so for them the journey was easier than for the divers later.
Thank you again for your contribution. The boys are fine and i sure believe they will grow up to be good people.
The effort they did to make sure they will be able to bring them out safely up to know amazes me. Even practicing at a swimming pool on how to maneuver the small child in the water. Wow. They are just normal people who did an amazing job and made something truly remarkable.
