Thai Basil Chicken (Pad Kra Pao) in Jimmy’s Kitchen + Jimmy’s Garden Tour

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

We're BACK in Jimmy’s Kitchen! Today we’re making Thai Chicken with Holy Basil or Pad Kra Pao, one of my favorite dishes of all time. And it’s super easy to make! I’m also taking you on a little tour of my garden to pick some fresh thai chilies in this very exciting new episode of Jimmys kitchen.
In the upcoming episodes, I’ll be cooking with friends! Can’t wait for you to see me cook with Harry Shum Jr in the next one :)
Also my new movie "Love Hard" is on Netflix now! A super rom com featuring Nina Dobrev, Darren Barnet, and Harry Shum Jr!
Leave suggestions in the comments for the next cooking video or mukbang!

I’m Thai. I like Jimmy and I like how Jimmy preparing Pad Kra Pao it’s almost perfect except one little thing; that basil is called ‘Ho Ra Pa’ not ‘Kra Pao’. Usually, we use Ho Ra Pa in red curry. So technically, this dish should be called Pad Ho Ra pa, lol( Pad is stir frying in Thai word). But everything else is perfect. I like the dipping sauce part.

The confusion between Ho Ra Pa and basil is real, but probably not as bad as my friend (a Thai who lives in Thailand whole life) who just look up to me and ask “Does we used Ho Ra Pa or Sa Ra Nae in Kra Pao?” Most painful moment of my life to realize what a derp grew up with.

The thai basil is supposed to be “holy basil, aka bai kra pao”. Too hard to find so you use regular basil instead “ho ra pa”.

Yeah I noticed that too but I guess Kra-Prao is harder to find than Horapa maybe? but people who dont buy or cook regularly can be easily confused. When I was abroad (UK) I substituted Kra-prao with normal Italian basil I think it taste more similar to real Kra-Prao than Horapa :) Anyway the rest of his recipe including crispy fried egg was very legit!

It's super cool that you have a backyard garden to use for your cooking! By the way, if you recorded this video around the time this premiered, it's likely that your tomatoes aren't fruiting because it's going to dormant in the winter and might just completely die off on its own, unfortunately. If not, it just looked like it was putting too much energy out making leaves, and sometimes you gotta prune some branches off plants to trick them into creating more flowers/fruits. Also, regarding the Thai Basil plant you said you had trouble planting, the trick is when the plant grows about 7 inches or so, you need to snip an inch off the main branch before it flowers, and it tricks the plant into creating a bigger, bushier Thai basil plant with larger leaves.

I was pleasantly surprised with Love Hard. I usually prefer watching action or psychological thrillers over rom-coms, but my cousin forced our family to watch it when we couldn't decide what to watch. Even though the film was predictable (i.e. it's easy to figure out who will end up with who based on the trailer), it was such a fun film to watch. It even got my brother, who absolutely loathes rom-coms, to laugh a few times throughout the film. I think Love Hard may be his favorite rom-com, only because he's never liked any other. Good job, you've unlocked 'Asian Brother Approved' for Love Hard!

That is exactly how Thai people eat Pad Ka Prao. Sunny side up egg on top of the finished plate. Great Job, Jimmy! Note: If you can find real Ka Prao basil (Google says it is called Holy basil), it will taste even better. But it is so hard to find.

Loved Love Hard Jimmy! Really authentic down to rendering the bit of fat from the chicken breast (when you didn’t get the thigh), and recommending the better Lee Kum Kee oyster sauce. And adding that crispy fried egg that’s not just a sunny side up egg. Enjoy your meal! R

Thanks for posting! This is one of those dishes where everyone can put their own twist on it. I think the key is the Thai basil…which has a really nice pepper flavor compared to Italian basil.

Jimmy!!! It’s such a shame! Just 2 months ago, I had a huge basil bush that went waste because it died as winter came. I wish i could make this dish with my basil. Your dish looked absolutely amazing! Thank you for sharing❤️

Try to manually propagate the tomato flowers, maybe! 💕 Had the same problem with my hydroponic setup before, solved pretty quick by shaking/blowing on the flower buds, or grazing with a paintbrush to spread the pollen around 😊

Can you next make a dish with Sichuan peppers? I've been in love with them ever since I had tasted them a couple years ago. The Sichuan peppers were part of a dish comprising of fried squid and fried (dried) chili peppers.

Thai Basil Chicken is my favorite Thai dish. 3 of my favorite Thai restaurants closed during covid, so this was a true blessing for me. Jimmy this recipe is fire. I told my Aunt about the oyster sauce you recommend and she loves it.

I don't think that even "Kra-pao" here. Holy basil = kra-pao, Thai basil = ho-rha-pha and here is the later one for sure. Nothing terribly wrong about how you do it (and occasionally - more like rarely, since holy basil is much much MUCH better - we have some Pad-ho-rha-pha), it just not the right leaves. BTW a bit more details in that chili fish sauce (Nampla-prik) would make it much better - slices of garlic (if you like shallots - this would be a great fit also), pinches of sugar, a splash of lime would make a great Nampla-prik.

I believe your version is very delicious as well, but the basil you used here was not actually “Kra prow”. Kra prow is Hot Basil & I believe you can find them in any Thai grocery market. The basil you used is called “Ho-ra-pa”, or sweet basil which is widely used in many Thai coconut milk curries. Just a little fun facts, but enjoy however you like 🥰 BTW, very impressive herbs garden, especially the Thai chillies! And the sauces… you nailed them! The Holy Trinity in all Thai stir fried dishes! 😉

Yes, many westerners make this mistake. They confuse between holy basil and sweet basil.

I love that garden!!! I grew a few modest Siam Queen basil plants from seed over the summer, and made this dish a few times because it really highlights the herby flavor rather than just using it as a garnish or in a soup. I tried growing chilies too, but some bad luck wiped out most of my gardening exploits. Hot chilies are nice since if you have too many, they can be dried! Ah, to have fresh-picked spicy condiments anytime~

4:39 You have to get the correct fertilizer. Some fertilizers promote plant growth. Other fertilizers enhance fruit growth. The dish looks great! Thanks.
