TGO | Hoyt Recurve Bow .vs. $100 Amazon Recurve Bow

Ғылым және технология

When you are looking to get into archery, pride is something you cannot usually afford. Whether for fun, or for hunting, or for learning archery as a survival skill, it is important that you know what you are buying. It is important that you understand the need for proper gear. However no amount of money spent on gear can make up for a lack of skill. There are many good quality traditional bows on the market today, but in this video I'm gonna do my part to make you a better informed consumer so you'll less likely to be up sold. There is in fact a bottom floor when it comes to bargains, and I may have found it.

    Had the bow set up at a pro shop. It performed just fine kzread.infoUgkxQEKUoxLWwayEDZR0NKB-5limn4MBU-2L . And I would say this is a good starting now that I could pass down to my son when he is older.But the package was missing the release and a nock was missing from one arrow.Dealing with customer support was terrible. They suggested I buy a new release rather than correct their own quality control issue because it’s to expensive for the. to ship it out from China.Update: manufacturer got back to me and resolved the issue. I retract the above statement.

    My first bow was a 5 dollar fiberglass recurve I bought at a flea market when I was a kid. It had about a 35# draw and I was lethal with it on the rabbits in the fields. By the time I was 15 the ranchers around let me hunt them around their gardens because they didn't want anyone using guns around their livestock. Since their isn't many archers I had a monopoly on those rabbits. The first rancher was skeptical that I would get any rabbits especially with my equipment. Two months later I searched for 3 hours without a sign of rabbit no scat nothing. He approached me in stunned disbelief saying, you killed every single rabbit here. Never underestimate a cheap used bow.

    In the U.K. You need a huge, fenced off overshoot distance behind the target area, with no public footpaths, or roads, and a large area with no habitation, or public risk to each side, before you can even apply for permission to practice archery within the boundary of an urban, or suburban area. And even then many clubs have closed down because public liability insurance premiums are often stupidly high, due to a sudden rise in court awarded payments to anyone who so much as tripped over a kerb in the U.K. while drunk... The last club I belonged to had more than 150 members, paying heavy fees, but despite the lack of any accidents or claims, the new insurance premium quoted, rose without explanation by thousands of pounds to more than 50% above the club’s yearly income.

    that's what I've been talking about. a samick sage can be had for cheap. quality control isn't the best so you have to pick out a good one. I've had mine and I shot the snot out of it drawing 31" past the 20000 shots mark with no problems drawing 62#. I've shot many different bows with different pricetags into thousands of dollars. the sage or any other value bow is as accurate as the next. what you really pay for in a high end bow is the material, the brand name, or the warm fuzzy feeling/status of having something you paid through the nose for. neither of these things will make it any more accurate. which is why I love traditional archery. YOU are as good as YOU are.

    The principle of starting archery with a cheap bow is reasonable (some people start and give up quite quickly), but as a long-term investment in terms of durability, chances are that the Hoyt bow will better stand the test of time and intensive usage, as opposed to a bow of an unknown brand and probably not made with the best materials available for cost reasons. The 36 lb Hoyt recurve bow I purchased over 20 years ago for competitions is still in fine shape: an outstanding American-made product indeed. Quality comes at a cost and requires years of expertise: you ultimately get what you pay for.

    arrows are more important than bows when it comes to acuracy. any bow shoots fine with practice. I agree that it's about getting close but 40 yard practice makes you a better short range shooter.

    To play devil's advocate and speaking from experience, going too cheap is frustrating and a turnoff. With things like arrows, you may save some money by getting China made arrows... BUT when 3 of your new dozen arrows break whether it be the tip, nock, shaft or fletchings, it quickly becomes as expensive as buying quality the first time. As far as bows go, I love my $150 Sage!

    Cheap is cheap. I see your point (especially for takedown bows) but there are plenty of American companies (Hoyt and Martin) that sell decent recurves in the $150 range. Throwing away a hundred bucks for unfixable broken limbs, delaminations or bent risers is dumb too. I don't think the industry doesn't provide good starter bows. These companies take pride in their name and won't sell crap. If people want to overpay for ''survival'' bows they don't know how to use anyway that's not the bow companies fault.

IMO this kind of "progress" just makes it less challenging and less interesting. But I do like your point about developing skills even if I don't find your equipment interesting. .

    @ 4:55 the first grouping was shot by the cheaper amazon bow, and the second grouping by the hoyt. How do I Know? Well, in the first grouping the arrow did not penetrate deeper, while in the second grouping, the arrows penetrated deeper. This means that the arrows in the second group were launched at a much higher velocity. And by looking at the two bows side by side, it is fair to conclude that the Hoyt had thicker limbs on it, which implies a higher poundage, hence the deeper penetration of arrows in the second group.

    @@rrjcavallo I might have missed the detail because the host is too slow in his delivery and I might have skipped a few bits. But I watched this video again, yes you're right. But, towards the end of the video, the arrows that he shot from the Hoyt penetrated deeper. I suggest you go watch that bit again. I don't know but maybe the thicker (stiffer) limbs are causing less flex and more spring-back force and causing the arrows to launch at a higher velocity. Not to mention the brace height on the Hoyt is visibly more as well, causing higher tension also resulting in a higher velocity launch of arrows. See, it also proves a thing or two about the premium products. Obviously, they have a better R&D and produce high(er) quality products. If what you said about the poundage was true, then Hoyt has certainly engineered a product that is more efficient in it's working even with a lesser draw weight.

    +GregDaGoblin I think that's what he means but the skill required to make a true traditional bow, the techniques for which were tradition, is by no means primitive. I'm not saying that's what you were inferring, just something I've noticed some people don't appreciate. To me, there is a distinct lack of tradition in “traditional” archery. Whether what you say is correct or not.

  • @Dark__Thoughts

    @Dark__Thoughts

    6 жыл бұрын

    Traditional refers to the design, not the materials. Modern materials and manufacturing make them obviously more sturdy and / or lightweight but the overall principle of a recurve bow is the same as it was / is with primitive bows out of wood.

  • @TristanBehrens

    @TristanBehrens

    6 жыл бұрын

    I would disagree. I would say that a 180lb english longbow (traditionally made) would be far sturdier than that 45lb fibreglass piece, no? And the D shaped cross section means that if well kept, it would likely outlast these as well. I understand that's not what you meant, just an interesting point. As for the principal being the same, again I would have to say no. Aluminium arrows do not have the flex required by traditional arrows in order for the archer’s paradox to properly take place. Rather they would bend. To combat this, modern recurve bows have a shelf cut to or past centre to eliminate the archer’s paradox wholly. Therefore, in my opinion, they have removed the tradition from bow-making, arrow making, fletching, and even the art and skill itself. Where then, I must ask, is the traditional aspect? These bows are just as modern as any compound. I'm not denying that it may be classified as such, I merely believe it to be an incorrect classification by definition.

  • @BilboSwagginsTheThird

    @BilboSwagginsTheThird

    A fiberglass bow will, without a doubt, be sturdier than a 180# english longbow, just because it says 45# doesn't mean that's its max, that would just be it's draw weight at 28" or whatever draw the manufacturer chooses, at ~170lbs I could probably hang on one without it breaking, if it's not super cheaply made. Carbon fiber arrows, much more common than aluminium because aluminium has a tendency to bend out of shape, can easily flex enough to make use of the archers paradox, they are also stronger and lighter than wood, which means they go faster, which means they have more energy. An example of that I can comment on is my arrows, my new arrows are 30 grains lighter, they go 10fps faster, they also have a 1 ft-lbs KE increase keeping everything else the same, and yes I know it doesn't matter I needed new arrows and they were cheaper. Speaking of that, I wonder how much of a difference it would make in velocity and KE if someone used a modern carbon fiber arrow with a 180# longbow.

  • @ADVJason

    OK that was painful to watch. How many times can you say the same thing. OK and seriously who is telling people to buy a pvc or "survival" bow to learn archery? The quality of the bow does matter. But like you said (sort of) you have to learn a lot before a lower end bow isn't going to work. Bows in the 100 - 200 range are great for a long time if they hold up. Heck I have some old bear bows that cost me a whopping 20-30 dollars. They are awesome bows. I can usually set someone completely up with arrows and gear for $100 if your looking. The trick there is how the bow is treated and knowing what to look for. As for the 100 amazon bow. I would be interested to see how it holds up over time and lot and lots of shooing. Put a couple thousand shots through it and if it is still good, then it isn't a bad way to go. Now for the cut past center and laminated limbs.... Ugh where do I start. Basically what your getting at is that it isn't so cheap they don't laminate and just use solid fiberglass. Although I have a few old kids bows that still shoot great that are all fiberglass. I wouldn't recommend them to more than a kid. Now the center cut thing. That is more of an issue with arrow spine. You can get away with a little more with a bow "cut past center" and is probably a good idea but not an absolute necessity. I have a built Osage self bows. No lamination no cut, not even close to center just shooting off my knuckle. And they shoot great. Again Spine of the arrow is key here.

When I got into archery my brother in law pushed me to get a 600 plus compound, but I was not so hip on the price tag and the complexity of compounds and their need for often repair of strings. I like the simplicity of the re curve and went with the samick sage for about 150 total with accessories included. 3 years later I am still enjoying my cheap bow with an increased skill level with while only investing about 250-350 dollars total (string, arrows, target, etc). It is a great way to get started into archery as a hobby or for hunting, can't beat the bang for the buck.

    I've got a feeling he doesn't mean a really nicely made PVC bow, I've seen a lot of extremely nice ones that people put a ton of time into and they're very well preforming bows. I think he's referring to an unchanged tube of PVC that has 2 notches carved into it, because that type of thing will never get anywhere close to the performance of a real bow. As for handmade bows out of wood; it depends on the craftsman, and their personal experience with making bows.
