Trout LOVE ballyhoo. I used to fish the Port O'Connor jetties at night with ballyhoo a lot. At first we used a light, but then we started turning the light off, and found that we caught more, bigger fish in the dark. Hook them up under the mouth and out through the top of the beak and you can catch several trout on the same bait. You would think that you would miss a lot of hookups because the ballyhoo were so big, but that almost never happened. It's best to break the end of the beak off, so that it doesn't catch on the leader and cause the ballyhoo to spin. They absolutely have to pull straight. I had a flounder boat, and in the summer the flats are full of ballyhoo that you can scoop up with a long-handled net. You have to slowly net them from the front. You have zero chance of scooping them from behind. Zero chance. The trout understand that, and they seem to always attack the ballyhoo from the head end. We had many nights where none of the many trout we caught were under 20 inches, and we had at least one fish over 25 inches most nights - often more than one of them. Ballyhoo are oily, and redfish love them too. Some nights the redfish were so active that we couldn't get past them to catch any trout. We got in a habit of floundering early, then netting our ballyhoo and heading to the jetties for trout/redfish. And, yes, we caught "limit slams" more than a few times. I wouldn't keep that many fish today, but back then things were different.

Thanks for the information. I wonder which spots are to catch the ballyhoo very interesting!!

I worked with some guys in Freeport who wouldn’t even go home 2 or 3 nights a week. Got off work, straight to the jetties and fish all night. They caught ballyhoo out there in a castnet and almost always caught monster trout on them. Pretty much every night they went they would catch a 7+ pound trout. Then come in and catch an hour or three of sleep at their desk before work. Lol

@@MrOmar60 Ballyhoo are all over Texas bays during the warm months - Spring to Fall basically. It's hard to get them without a boat because they are VERY fast when they want to be. If you're at the jetties fishing with a light, they will come close to the boat and you can use a long-handled net or a cast net to catch them. But you asked which spots, and the answer is that just about any flats area has them. The best area is in about 2 1/2 - 4 feet of water, but they will be shallower and deeper, just in smaller numbers. A lot of people think they are little gar, but you learn to tell the difference pretty quickly. They look like little billfish. Usually you will see them in loose groups of maybe 4-6, and you can scoop several of them before the rest swim too far away. If anyone reads this and doesn't have a flounder boat, we also used to get them out of a tunnel hull boat my friend owned. You can use the outboard, but that's pretty tough. We poled along with a flood-pattern light on the bow. It's a little hard to handle a pole and a net, so usually we would take turns. It's not hard at all to get a couple of dozen and go fishing while they're still fresh.

@@matthewtischler918 LOL. I love guys who love it that much. When I was in college I would go to class, go to work, go fishing all night... come back the next morning and clean fish, shower in the field house at school, and do it all over. I remember sitting down to watch a Cowboys game after three nights of that, and waking up on Monday not knowing where I was.
