SAN ANTONIO - Katy football is known for putting up a lot of points, pressuring their opponent, and out running them like Usain Bolt. They didn’t realize Austin Vandegrift was also Usain Bolt and loved pressure.
Hayden Arnold’s 37 yard field goal as time expired lifted the Vipers past Katy 38-35 and into the 6A-II finals for the 1st time ever. They will face Desoto who beat Denton Guyer in the other semifinal. The Vipers outlasted San Antonio native Seth Davis, who broke Katy’s all-time rushing record, and took advantage of a defensive pass interference they committed that saved a touchdown.
Davis ran for 251 yards and 2 touchdowns to break Rodney Anderson’s all-time Katy rushing record at 6,748 yards but the defense couldn’t stop wide receiver Miles Coleman who had 267 yards receiving and a touchdown and threw for 2 more.
Davis had a 64-yard touchdown run, his 2nd of the 2nd half, that tied the game at 35 with 2 minutes remaining. But Brayden Buchanan moved his team down the field and aided by a roughing the passer foul, set up Arnold with the field goal attempt which went right down the middle for the win that ended a wild 4th quarter featuring 31 points. Buchanan threw for 453 yards.
Katy (13-2) took a 28-21 lead with 8 minutes to play on a Caleb Griffin 92 yard catch and go to the end zone. But Buchanan threw an 83-yard catch and go to Beck Ormand down to the 1 that set up the game-tying TD.
After a defensive stop, Buchanan hit Grant Lindley on a long strike that set up Coleman’s 2nd touchdown pass, a 17-yarder to Alex Witt, with 3 minutes left to give Vandegrift (14-1) the lead back at 35-28.
In the 1st quarter up 7-0 Vandegrift defender Davis Scott was beaten by a Katy receiver on a route to the endzone. He committed a DPI to save a touchdown, much like in golf when a golfer takes a penalty shot and saves par, but Katy not only didn’t score a touchdown they missed a field goal that proved costly later on.
Vandegrift joins Wimberly as Austin teams in the finals this year. They join Lake Travis, Westlake, Cedar Park, and LBJ as ATX teams to reach a football in the 2020s.
