Cities, businesses and government agencies all need to provide more safe protected places to lock and store bicycles at businesses, schools, bus stops, train stations and airports. Places to lock bicycles need to be convenient, in public view and hopefully near security cameras or where security personal frequent. Always lock your bicycle and park in a "safe" location for personal protection and to protect your property. More cities need to have local Police on bicycles. Having Police officers on bicycle patrols would provide recommendations for better bicycle safety. The Police officers could make recommendations for better protected bike lanes, parkings areas and safety. Having more cities adopt bicycle patrols would help reduce crime and officers talking to more people that use bicycles would help in making recommendations to the city about improved bicycle infrastructure. Children should be able to ride to school safely on a bicycle and not have to be driven in a minivan.

wow, a sensible approach to bike locks . i use a 12 mm thick hardened chain in conjunction with a kryptonite u lock and i NEVER lock up my bike in a suspicious crime zone , whatever that means . i also live in an area where people WILL get involved if they see a crime being committed which may be the best security of all . nice video .

We had been looking for a frame lock extension chain and got a Tex-Lock (after seeing it on your NBD article). It's great for low-risk situations like you mentioned . Based on YT videos, the Tex-Lock has more fabric layers than the Abus version. It's super light and easy to carry on either of our Tern eBikes (can't even notice its there). We also carry a Hiplok D1000 and Kryponite NY Chain so we use a 2 or 3 combo (+frame lock) depending on the situation.

In low theft areas I've been fairly comfortable using the cafe lock, a heavy duty 6' foot chain, and Abus cafe lock extension, and sometimes adding the Abus folding lock. That seems like a lot to cut through. I like visible trafficked areas, but I not sure a stranger would feel comfortable interrupting a thief armed with a portable grinder. I think some people would prefer to mind their own business. I'm encouraged when a good samaritan steps in to courageously disrupt a thief.

5% is a low figure for locks in my eyes, but definitely a good starting point. Always turn to the bike shaman, Sheldon Brown for his masterful guidance on all things bikes. His locking strategy is perfecto.

@@BikeShopGirl I also think 5% is too low for a starting point. I think the best approach is to try and use two or more locks and have your bike locked to two separate things. My partner and I will have one bike locked up to a bike stand and then sometimes lock our bikes together when we are going in for a coffee. It depends. My bike cost me about $2000 CAN and I've spent $350 for a Kryptonite 11 mm chain lock and around $500 CAN for a LiteLok U lock. I'm still nervous parking and locking my bike.

Tip for those with ebikes, especially costing $2k+, spend 15% of the cost of your bike to defend it, the best way I recommend is with a simple $20 rechargeable bike alarm hidden discreetly, a heavy duty U-Lock like the $299 Abus/Hiplock, or SkunkLock Carbon for $179, I'd get more satisfaction of someone getting a rocket shot of noxious gas in the face, & save $120! 😆 Also use a heavy duty chain, this is where you can make up buying the expensive U-Lock, get a 10mm-12mm AKM Chain & heavy duty lock combo, as well as a Smart Things, or Air Tag, or at least the alarm, U-Lock & chain for any city or overnight parking

Best way to protect bike. Get a kiox display installed so it can be removed to software lock the bike. Get insurance and a hiplock d1000. You get that and the cafe lock and it's the best option.

Software lock from the Kiox display does stop a thief from using the ebike properly, but does not stop the ebike from being thrown in a van or truck and stolen. At that point it is a pain for the thief to get the ebike working without replacing the display, but you would still have no bike.

Thank you so much for introducing me to the tex-lock mate. Saw it on one of your instagram posts and got it. I use it at work, because it is a gated area so that should be enough. Even got a second bag from them to use on my front rack for my gloves. At home i use a Abus steel-o-chain 9809K in the basement. Thats the lock i used before the mate and i take it with me when doing trips. Have an Abus Bordo 6000K folding lock, but i don't really like it. Got it for free from my employer because i rent the bike over the company. It's "light" and always stays on my bike in the bottle holder in case i need some extra security or want to lock the frontwheel. Also got a Kryptonite New York, but sadly most bike racks are shit here and you can't use an u-lock properly. Too heavy and clunky so most of the time it stays home.

I forgot to say my bike locking strategy! I tend to lock up in relatively safe locations, so for my Priority 600x I use a Kryptonite U lock and get my frame+wheel attached to the rack. For my Tern Vektron I use an Abus Bordo Granit but it is surprisingly hard to get that bike locked up. I think a flexible chain like this would be a dramatically better option all around for the Vektron AND I could see using this with the U-Lock for my Priority 600x in a riskier parking location.

I was really disappointed in the ABUS 8mm IvyTex adaptor chain. The plastic cover over the end of the chain that goes into the frame lock broke, and revealed that where the pin and chain attach, the steel is significantly thinner than on the chain, and would be very easy to cut. I do not think that this is higher security or a better product than the basic 6mm adaptor chain that's half the price.

@@pauldamian2988I have the Kryptonite New York U lock that measures 0.82” in diameter and I can just barely fit the Hiplok XL 14mm lasso-style chain lock. Since your U lock is even smaller in cross section it should easily fit through a link of the Hiplok XL chain. It is only 1 meter long, but the lasso end makes it work like a much longer standard link chain. It even has a nice fabric covering to keep it from chipping your bikes paint.

Looking for tips on how and which locks I need to lock up an electric cargo bike less than $1K for a commute to work. Can't park the bike inside. Also for going into stores for shopping. I've been told I need two locks. I've seen video in my town of bikes being stolen. People just stand by and film. Police have set traps. I don't want to have to spend $300 per lock. I've heard people complain about heavy chains. In the past, I've had a regular mountain bike and 10 speeds stolen. I've recovered one a block away and another at the police station a much later date in worse condition.

For the most part, if people see a handful of aggressive young adults all wearing hoodies cutting through bike locks or racks with an angle grinder, very very few are going to get involved. I'm pretty confident that bike shop girl wouldn't either. Call the police from a safe distance possibly, but still only just a minority would even do that. But what are average response times from the moment you start to dial until a patrol would turn up? Too long almost always. The most expensive €300+/- hiplock and others can have both shackles cut through completely in 8 minutes or less using a battery angle grinder and the correct discs by an experienced operator. And that is Diamond rated. And the vast majority of bike racks can be cut through in a fraction of that time like the loose and wobbly one bsg locked her bike to. Throw the bike in the back of a van and cut off the two or three Diamond rated locks the justifiably paranoid owner bought at your leisure. For just my bicycle I use a Burg and Wachter 2 metre 12mm hardened squared links chain with a mini D lock rated gold for a motorcycle but Diamond for a bike. I added a second mini D lock so I can loc lock it in an 8 instead of a long 0. Double the cutting for a thief. It weighs over 6,5kg. It gives me a lot more options for where I can secure my bike. Especially to trees and wooden poles. No bike thieves ever carry a chainsaw. Also chains are much more dangerous to cut than solid metal locks. They can cause a disc blade to shatter with drastic consequences for the operator. Hopefully the potential thieves know this too. Always keep the chain suspended and not lying on the ground. I also carry a regular large D lock so I'm as protected as I practically can be. And I'm absolutely well aware that it is still not enough if someone really wants to take my bike. Nothing is ever enough if they really want your bike, I have finally ordered my first e-bike and I think I will be using the same as above plus a little extra.

@@BikeShopGirl That is admirable and very courageous of you to do so. But always put your safety first above a bike or anything else. Add my extra large frame bike plus racks, bags and a little luggage and there's another 20 kg. I could easily add another 20 kg or more sometimes too. When I pull a trailer that's usually 40 to 60 kg behind me and I have had 85 in total. Over 200 kg on the road with pedal power only relatively easily. With just myself and a little luggage on the bike say 140 kg. 6.5 kg is just over 4.5% additional weight. I'm not riding for performance. I'm riding to go places and get sh1t done.
