Good to see someone firing other than just round balls. I cast from three different Colt molds. Heavy, medium and light elongateds. I m getting ready to test the Navy against the pocket Navy firing the elongateds. I m surprised as to how powerful the Pocket Navy is. There is only a slight charge difference between the two. Target will be a 1 in layered pine board type. 25, 35, 50 and 75yds.

Dont forget the Spiller and Burr 36 cal! Yes, all CS 36s would have been able to use the Richmond labs bullet. Adding Colts name to the package was a best practice, for sales and marketing. I'm actually quite fond of the Richmond labs, in my early Uberti navy and early Spiller and Burr but newer revolvers had some accuracy issues.

I was wo,xering the same thing. If you left out the wad and greased the bullet with spg or the like what would it do

The is about a 1/4 inch of gap between the butt and the rest. My posture wasn't that great for shooting. The seat on the bench I was using is about 8 inches shorter than the one I regularly use, so I wasn't exactly lined up right to begin with.

My pietta 51 shot high and left, and while the high is just a matter of sight picture and bore axis, the left was sight and bore alignment, it needed the rear notch cut about a 16th of an inch deeper and almost the same moving it to the right, and that was dead on, and I think a major factor also in realigning my poa to poi was recrowning the muzzle, the crown bevel was an almost long taper on the right side(looking down the bore) and just about a sharp squared corner on the right, basically untouched, so the crowning was way off and it had to have also been throwing the shots to that open side. Anybody who's got one of these and its shooting way to the left should definitely be looking at that crown, might save you a lot of filing at the notch, not to mention should always be done anyway, every gun except the real high end products need a good crowning.

I have the same mold and I get better groups without a wad. In my experience, I have found that conicals, in general, group better without a wad.

I use the wads because they leave a cleaner bore. I might give it a try with some grease over the ball and see if things do better. The Colt Cartridge Works bullet works fine with wads. They grouped about an 1 1/2 inch.

Hi. Cool video. Where did you get the wood stand/rest you are using at the range?

How many grains does the bullet weight? What happens if you put a bigger charge with it?

I am not sure about the sight calibration on the percussion 1851, but in the 1873 the sights were calibrated for 50 yard shooting with a 6 o'clock hold so you could see your intended target as you fired. So perhaps you should do your testing in a similar fashion. In the day the calvary was armed with the revolver as well as having their saber and a carbine. The handgun was used as last resort, and since you might still be mounted on your horse you would desire to engage the enemy from the 50 yard distance because the horse would close the distance real fast.

Thanks for the video. It seems to me that a bullet that was made to be used in a paper cartridge wouldn't be very accurate without the paper around the reduced rear section of the bullet to center it in the chamber bore. It looks like it would come out wobbling as the rear end could be off center. What do you think?

I've used the Richmond labs a few times. I believe the little tapered paper cartridge didn't make any difference, it burns up way too fast. The bulbous nature of this bullet makes it slightly bigger than a typical 376 even a 380, so its pretty tight fit, great seal, grabbing the grooves very tightly, makes for a steady round with good pressures for a 16gr charge. 16gr was the recommended Confederate charge. I'm curious to know how they decided on the shape, lead usage or less powder usage, had to be some reason. In older revolvers it was great, newer ones had some issues, but certainly a good round, the cool factor is pretty high. I've used them with and without a wad, not really any difference from my experience. I do feel they performed better in Uberti made 36s but will probably always use them in my Spiller and Burr and Griswold and gunnison.

What diameter did the bullets cast at ?

  • @DukeFrazierProductions

The largest diameter is .390. They shave a very healthy ring of lead. You really have to use pure lead when you cast these, otherwise you'll have issues.

They are. However my fat fingers can't roll a paper cartridge worth a crap, and you have to modify the modern reproductions to accept them.
