It’s a cool idea. I’m just not onboard for $600 camera that takes mediocre pictures. It might be the film stock but I’m seeing washed out colors, blown out highlights etc.

Agree, not sure what the sales incentive is. Everyone has instant photos now, so unless the idea is to go back to blurry, over-exposed, muddy images lacking detail? But you do get an instant hard copy, which is trading on Polaroid's original appeal.

I expected a higher price tag, but certainly didn't expect $600. That's half the cost of a used Leica M3/2/5, or even the full cost of a very good condition medium format setup.

@@osprey_8864 I think it also has to be mentioned that there are third party manual cameras compatible with Instax film, and from what I've seen they look to be excellent quality. More expensive, but I also think once you're spending over $500 on a film camera you're probably willing to spend almost $1000 to get EXACTLY what you want.

Polaroid film is super overpriced compared to Instax, but the Now+ is a good alternative to this camera if you really want to use this sort of system. It has basically all of the same features except the manual controls and special features are done via a bluetooth (I think) app
Unfortunately despite the price tag, the photos that came out still looks pretty similar to the entry level polaroid camera

polaroid is not for better pics it's for the vibe... Also those are disposable and i agree with the original comment they have made the 100ish dollar polaroids like "now" or "now+" or even "go" that can take many times more photos than a disposable camera and it takes pretty much the same photos as this new I-2 model. But ofc I-2 has more features and better features than those models but still don't agree with the price tag.@@YaYousef5

They've been working on a new stock for a couple years now, the problem is that a lot of the chemicals the old Polaroid company used are now banned by regulations and so when the company went defunct the door closed on those chemicals. The new Polaroid effectively has to reverse engineer something similar using different chemicals, which is a lot more difficult than people give credit for. Part of the reason Fujifilm's instax remains the way it is is that its formulation hasn't changed in like 30+ years and they still get certain exceptions. If the Japanese government ever cuts them off that'll probably spell Fujifilm leaving the analog film industry for good.
@Razzbow

@WittyDroog why are some chemicals banned? I feel like a second generation I type would finally make me go all in on the i-2. Reclaimed series is cool too
@WittyDroog

@Razzbow They were pretty toxic and/or fell outside of environmentally safe restrictions mostly. Some also just stopped being widely available for wholesale. Even when Polaroid originally worked on it their chemists tested tens of thousands of compositions (Google "polaroid chemistry photo" to see a wild photo of their early development in the chemist labs).

700 €? Hellll no!!!!
I had a cheap polaroid 600 in the 90's when I was a student. The lens, a crappy plastic one, much like those found on Polaroid's today (excluding glass lens models). Having said that and looking back at my old polaroids, you simply can't compare the quality of the film back then vs now. I'm ever so grateful for Impossible initially "resurrecting" Polaroid film. I just wish more money would be invested into fixing the chemistry of the film, instead of new "gimmicky" models, coming out every so often .. or that's my opinion at least. (The I-2 is a beauty though, I got to admit).
Photos look they came out of almost any other vintage polaroid. This a luxury item for sure.
Oh that’s so cool the way they upgraded it! I feel like the pictures still come out looking the same as the old Polaroids though, I thought they’d come out a bit sharper since they upgraded the camera.

@WittyDroog
9 ай бұрын
You're still working with a very complex chemistry (just the idea of instant film is wild), but what this camera allows you to do is stretch it to its limits in ways that older or even other cameras in their lineup can't pull off easy. Some of the other reviews I've seen for this have shown both photos that are more or less expected of a clear shot from a 600 box camera, but then some are nailing some GREAT shots in less than ideal conditions which is what really excites me (like portraits in low light coming out far better than I normall expect). This isn't what I'd reccomend as your "first" Polaroid camera if you were getting into it, but as someone who was eyeballing a MiNT SLR670 this is suddenly a cross-shop option
Those little interactions you have with people are priceless, you should put them in more videos!
I like the fact that theres new investment in to film with this release but I don't know who it's for. The pricetag takes out anybody new or inexperienced and the actual photo quality eliminates a lot of photographers who would want better bang for their buck
Hopefully Instax does something similar. With instax film being significantly cheaper than polaroid, I feel like they would have a decent crack at dominating there

@@hellothisiskyle Agreed. I like the new SQ40 but it's just old camera in a new shell. And given that Wide represents such a small sliver of their market (The standard "mini" Instax is still their most popular size category) we'll be lucky if we ever see a successor to the 500AF
@marianoguy
9 ай бұрын
@@hellothisiskyle you still have to consider that the instax camera and film is their most popular photography product, even counting their digital camera market. but on the other hand, I believe they understand that their success with this product is due to it being considered more like a toy and not like a photographer's tool. so they don't have much incentive for making better cameras, even if lots of photographers like the film for and know its capabilities with third party cameras and mods and such

Instantkon RF70 but it's priced on the high side.. Shoots Instax Wide, I think there's a square format transport version.. would be cool if they could call back to the old folding camera days and support both formats.. i.e. those 6x9 medium format folders that could mask up to 645. My pick for instant cameras is still SX70 though..
@WittyDroog
9 ай бұрын
@jhsunix MiNT's work is pretty incredible stuff, it's also VERY expensive but I'd make the argument it's worth it's value. On the in-between Lomogrpahy makes a lot of fun and wild stuff for Instax, it's less "fool proof" than the regular Fuji cameras but they tend to have a lot of fun novelty.
Nice topic! I’m glad Polaroid chose you to review this camera. I can barely recall a higher-end folding Polaroid, the SX-70, that my Dad had. I kind of remember a higher contrast result than these photos exhibit, but this look works in the California coastal fog out there. The portraits you made, the two surfers and the beautiful good dog, are awesome. For the landscapes, I guess I prefer screaming resolution. Although I can see these photos really looking great as a different point of view mixed into the overall project that you’re working on. Very tempting lux purchase, I’ve got to admit. Cheers, Willem! ✌️
It says it has a sharp lens but the photos still look like the old Polaroid, $600 is way too much for almost the same camera as the Polaroid now +

The portrait of the surfies together is so good! You should do more polaroid work mate
Actually the one with the flash too looked sick
This is a really interesting camera that looks like a fair balance of fun and creative control when you need it. I'd love to play with one but $600 dollars plus film is too rich for my blood. The instax mini evo was already a stretch, but I'm sure there's a market for it!
Cool video Willem! Photos turned out so niiice! Just wish it wasn't priced at $600 lol
Cool product and great that this option is now on the market. But not only because of the price it seems like a niche product because Polaroid is more like a run-and-gun camera for snapshots without high expectations when it comes to image quality and dialing in settings.

The flash portrait of the surfers. Portfolio worthy
good on Polaroid for reaching out to Willem for a little review video. even though i don't want one, i still enjoyed this video, and this is "marketing $" by polaroid well spent in my opinion.
I was pretty excited myself when i saw a new polaroid camera bc i used to shoot polaroids all the time till it got kinda pricey. But im amazed this cost more than the SX70 but in the end youre photos will look the same as the ones taken on a $20 polaroid camera mainly bc the film. It's hard to get a decent shot with them even if you have manual controls. Theres just not much latitude with that film and you have factors that affect it such as light hitting the polaroid while developing and temperature. so like out of those 8 shots you get per pack. about 3-5 come out good. which is not much for the cost of it. So its hard to justify the $600 price tag.,
looks interesting - any idea on just how long will the prints last before fading/colour shifts etc
Would not have believed that Polaroid still exist as a company let alone produce a new camera!! Hope it gets some sales traction to make it worth their effort and expense. I've got an old Polaroid in my antique museum of photography collection. Probably still works.
gonna need that LW backpack soon Willem :)
Those surfers were so cool to let you get that shot of them! Hopefully they get to see this haha
So I’ve been using the I-2 for about a month now and.. it’s definitely good outdoors (in ideal light) but anything indoors or in lack luster light, you might as well forget it. I’ve also found the only way is by using a light meter and adding an extra stop or so of light to bounce off the film just to get a proper exposure
Why they invest in new camera with focus mode? They have beautiful old cameras with these option. They need to invest in the chemistry formula. I think the photos looks just like from the other cameras.

Agreed my friend!
I still need to get my SX-70 fixed, but I'm glad to see the new Polaroid finally try to make something that matches it in terms of quality and surpasses it in terms of features.
I'm not sure if this applies to I-Type film, but I shoot 600 color/B&W film with my Polaroid One-Step. I keep it under the frog tongue for several minutes after each photo because I read that today's film needs to be covered/kept in the dark longer, unlike theOG film back in the day.
yooo willem, congrats to getting sponsored by polaroid! you really really really earned it! thank you for your videos, you are a big inspiration for me

That pup ❤.
Camera is awesome! But holy no one has noticed that Long Weekend Backpack!
Nice Video! I have to say I was more interested in the Long Weekend Backpack than in the Polaroid😅
I think, that´s a great camera, because it´s near the "old SX 70" with a little better lens, and the advantage that you can use three kind of films (SX 70, 600 and the I-type). The SX 70 cost for their times near the same as this new one. So, I think, it´s great that Polaroid have created a new full manual/automatic art camera! Good luck for this new camera!
is that a long weekend backpack?!👀👀
where did you buy your tripod? it looks really nice!
I want this camera. I love its look.
As a one step 2 user for years, I’m tempted to try this camera once it os made available here in the Philippines. One step 2 is still up there when it comes to i-type bests but considering the current price of polaroid films, I suggest to try the Fujifilm Instax Wide 500AF.
Yoooo, I just found a cool edit bit at 2:27 you can see the bird only flew halfway past the screen because it was landing on a ledge, but the bird was eddited to fly all the way accros. very very cool, I love the depth of detail
600$ for the camera is expensive but honestly I can wrap my head around it. What I can't believe and why this camera will flop is almost 20$ for 8 shots ! That's absolutely insane. I'm shooting 35mm half frame with an Olympus pen f because film prices are stupid. But this thing makes 35mm seem like a deal! EDIT - that image quality is hilarious
This would be great to have a 2nd (well more like 3rd) camera for work to take a high quality instant pic and hand off to the subject
With this camera, is what is in the viewfinder what the picture will be? I know some poloroids you have to offset and adjust. This is something really important to me to find out.
Very cool concept. Would love to have more control, but considering the quality consistency of the instant film and the cost of the thing, I’m gonna just stick with my $30 Sun660 😂
Thanks for this video. Is there any manual focus mode like on the SX70?

Out of my price range but glad somebody is making something new and interesting in the analog space!
I can't bother with the comments from people who have barely even shot this film, but I've been super impressed with what I've seen from this camera vs. my beloved SX-70. There's a certain glow among the sharpness from that camera that I'm so drawn to, and I actually see it on everything I've seen out of this camera. The film has much better saturation than Instax, the lower ISO options are a lot more tolerable and now that this camera introduces full control, hitting most or all of a pack helps negate the missing 2 frames from the days of yore, and even most of the cost. The film has been great for a few years now, and it's only gotten better.
the price tag is crazy hope black friday helps this yr
while I was researching the canonet ql18I saw you commented somewhere that it was one of your first cameras. could you make a video on it? I haven't found a lot of people online shooting with it in your style. greetings
Cool camera and all but when is that backpack dropping? 👀
hold on a minute is that a long weekend backpack i can see?
I feel like to justify 700 for the camera you'd need to have better film emulsions. For the price you could get a 35mm for serious work and an Instax for everyday point and shoot.
Dawg, you should check out the Instantkon RF70. A more manual take on this, it was fun when I rocked it for a short while. If they could bring down the price to around this that would help the value prop. Lenses are probably comparable but the RF70 gets you f/5.6
Willem, love your content and presentation, the image quality of your videos looks fantastic! Regarding the polaroid - I was expecting more from that "improved lens". At f8 and f18 it doesn't look all that sharp at all, I don't know if it's because of the cartridge quality or the way it prints just doesn't justify 600$ + cartridge for me with modern day standards. There doesn't seem to be much improvement at how it handles imagery. Maybe it worked better back in the day when people weren't used to seeing sharp photos. Still. Can get a used Fujifilm for the money - I went for the XE-3 thing was 300 bucks with 16 f2 lens and card.

"PICTURES IN MY SOUL"
i damn near skeeted on myself when i saw that first long exposure
Regarding the pricetag, this is essentially their flagship product. They are selling more "regular" Polaroid box cameras as well as just the ability to grab a Sun 600 off the aftermarket but this is really geared to those who want a manual control product. People say "Well I can just get an SX-70" or "For the money I can get an SL680" but even in the last two years the prices on those older cameras are skyrocketing as supplies diminish. I have five SX-70's and only three are fully functional currently, servicing getting more and more expensive for them. I welcome any new analog camera regardless what it does just for the sake of having options. Comparatively the price and feature set puts it in line with the MiNT SLR670 range, which can easily top over $1000 depending on features, and while those are gorgeous pieces of engineering and I don't scoff at their price suddenly this looks much more managable. As for those saying they wouldn't spend that much on Polaroid it's totally reasonable, I always recommend a secondhand 600 box camera for those looking to try it out, but this product is certainly for folks who want to be a bit more experimental and creative with the platform. Personally I use a Polaroid back with my Mamiya RB67 for producing the best shots I can, but I'm still intrigued by this and may pick it up for its ease of use.

Whats the release date? thanks for the video
is that a Long Weekend Backpack i'm seeing? 👀
2:44 - "shhpooped" 😂
Cool camera but for $600 I could buy a couple of refurbished SX-70s and still get that nice feeling of being upset about the quality and longevity of Polaroid's current emulsion. It wouldn't surprise me if Polaroid is working on it, in fact I am sure they are, but to release this without an updated emulsion feels like a waste of my money when Instax are seemingly higher quality just not the form factor I'm looking for, yet. Does this even have a glass lens? If not, even with the fancy tech inside of it, that price point for an all plastic body with a plastic lens is silly imo. Right now this seems like its just a rich kids toy, which I am sure there is a market for.
