Hey Willem, just wanna say, the way you've moved from mostly a gear channel to exploring your own journey and process as an artist has been so great to watch all these years, and now your ability to communicate your ideas and processes is so insightful, even just a Q&A becomes an inspiration and motivation to keep working on my own things. So yeah, thanks so much man, keep doing what you're doing.
I would love the video of you going over some of your favorite websites! That would be amazing, I change my website once a year because I can never make exactly what I want or something that vibes with me... so inspiration would be great!

I've always appreciated seeing your whole shooting process, from good photos to bad. it gives the viewer a realistic idea of what shooting film is like, nice work
Film prices are fine....now I've sold that kidney
Your natural honesty really resonates with me and I think a lot of your other subscribers as well.
Absolutely agree, the reason I love your videos is because I see your process. I find there's also some magic in seeing a fantastic shot within it's less perfect context. Thank you for sharing your hard work!
At this point, I just bulk-load Vision3 film and develop it in C-41 chems. Since I'm legit only into this hobby for the chemistry, I don't much mind the added imperfections from the remjet layer.
Black and white film is still very affordable for 35mm and 120. I think more people should go that route until film prices even out again but also there is nothing wrong with having a film and digital work flow. Being able to use both and find what works best for you. In all just enjoy the process or you will never be satisfied no matter the costs.

I've done that Very same thing, color was getting out of hand so I switched to B&W and never looked back. I only do monobath developing at the moment but it keeps the 35mm and 120 rolls going and my enjoyment of film. But when I want. A digital B&W workflow I have my Leica M-E ready for me, which result I really enjoy to - everyone needs to find that balance
@Awayne429

@@SebastianOakley there is something about B&W at night here in San Francisco that color film just doesn’t do it for me. Also B&W 120 for medium format portraits is probably one of my favorite ways to photograph people. I also use my digital camera when I need to take a lot of photos with a fast turnaround time for certain projects I’m working on.

@@dahterrasse I still shoot primarily color film stocks but only what I can afford and what Willem said how expensive it must be for those who are in college/university on a budget it would be really difficult to start this hobby. One thing about digital, it is very difficult to replicate the colors of film.

@@Awayne429 I got a film camera with my tight budget so I wouldn't need to wait any longer saving up for a digital camera. Sure I could've gotten a cheap dslr but I know I wouldn't have been very happy with it. I prefer the colours of film anyways so it was a good choice. I'll get myself a lil digital camera for less artistic photos and especially for video soon though.
Thank you so much for another meaningful video. Your transparency in sharing your work process is something I respect and admire. So much of what you say and do resonates with me. Quality over quantity. Acceptance of the messiness and mistakes in creating artful work. The struggle to create something true to yourself and how Instagram affects that journey. The questions make for more questions - and this curiosity and openness is what fuels our work. And for those of us who are not Instagram, thank you a million times over for making these videos accessible here on KZread!
Love your content and this Q&A, Willem! Keep on rolling
This guy is just the best. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
I’ve been watching for years and have found myself growing in a striking similar way in terms of my relationship with photography. Looks like you’re really progressing in a very observant mature way. And I’m happy to see it because the photos are just getting ‘better’ (just my opinion) Good luck man, keep it up. :)
Lovely video! Bring back the C-41 podcast hahaha, I really enjoy longer form content like this one!
Prices have spiralled - legit 3 years ago I could get a single roll of Portra 400 for £10 - they’re now £20
Never met you before (and hope to one day), but have always enjoyed your video content! So humble bro! Keep it up Willem~
Love your thoughts on Instagram, that’s exactly how I feel too. It’s a dangerous place if it’s not used correctly. Love your videos and how genuine and authentic they are, obviously would love to see more of them but appreciate the purpose and pace behind these all! Thanks man!
A M3 found it's way to me a few years back and I got a 40mm 1.4 Voigtlander for it. The camera is simple and solid.
You should try the Minolta CLE. Basically a Leica M7 but lighter and much cheaper. The rangefinder and film loading process are also a lot better than the CL, and it was released in 1980 so they will be significantly newer as well.
Sorry to hear your CL didn't work out... It's a lovely camera. Loving your recent projects and the trajectory of your channel. It's always calming and has artistic value. Definitely second the website video idea, would love to see what's out there.
Appreciate the honesty!
I am shooting mostly black and white film, I reserve color film for medium format and 4x5 large format. I think budgeting for film is important and making each shot count. As far as darkroom printing, I would also recommend the Intrepid Compact Enlarger, it can be set up with a copy stand, it’s a great way to learn printing of 35mm and Medium format negatives, it’s very compact and can be stored on a shelf in a shoebox.
For your Morro Bay project - when looking for more and more perspectives, have you been able to hop on a boat and shoot the rock from the water?
I agree with lab developing. I work in a lab we run control strips daily. I don't plan on ever doing my own C41.
Love the channel and like your new hair style.
the goat of youtube film
Cute hair Willem! 🤣😍
Knowing what you actually need is a huge achievement in itself.
I was looking through some figures from weddings I shot in 2016 vs today. I could buy the film and get it all developed for about £400 in 2016. Now it costs circa £1200 for a wedding of the same scale. The prices of everything has gone up, sadly, but it would be nice for film to come down in cost a bit to something more manageable. 5 rolls of Portra is around £85 on average here in the UK as of Aug 2023.
New Willem Video Time‼️
definitely up for a video looking at websites
Thank you for sharing the Q&A, I felt like it really helped! Do you have any photographers you are interested in right now?
Felt that last bit about instagram. I’ve been off of it for the last few months purely for mending my attention span and my relationship with photography. My philosophy and attitude toward photography has changed significantly in the short time I’ve been off the app.
Please make a video about sharing other photographers websites! I would love to see

I'm new to film photography so the film prices suck but worth it to continue pushing along an art like this. I just wish that I could actually find some film because all of the stores are sold out and the online retailers are backordered. Lol.
These banger accounts pumping the stoke on film definitely don’t mess with prices
I think for film prices, I’m not dealing with it so bad because I know what I like photographing and I search really deep for prices. I primarily just shoot Portra 800 and Gold 200/Ultramax 400 in 35mm a lot. I also shoot a lot of digital so the prices isn’t totally bad.
would love to see a video on websites!
Beautiful video🥰
Hugely agree with the IG point
I hope you don't give up on the CL. You definitely got a bummer of copy but there are plenty of good ones out there - love mine as a great little walking-around camera, especially when coupled with the 40mm f/1.4 Nokton Classic (or the 40mm Summicron-C, which is TINY). The meter is kinda terrible and I almost completely ignore it and meter with my eyes, which I'm guessing you do as well. Hard to beat the price, too - I can't justify spending the dough on a comparable Leica that's gonna be bigger, heavier, and will make me cry real tears if it gets damaged.
Bummed about the Leica! I’ve been relying on plain old Fuji 400 for $25 at Wal-Mart (3 pack) to keep shooting film. Haven’t been able to find Ultra Max for a few months at all the local Walgreen’s. 😓 Love that you’re finding balance with your KZread output and relaxing a bit about constantly creating. Knowing how fulfilled you are is such great self-awareness.

Extreme Rock Photo Challenge - get in a kayak and shoot the rock from the water :D Willem do you only use an enlarger for prints or do you sometimes print the scans? Any printer recommendations there for digital scan prints?
How about ZV-E10 for vlog photography? I saw a filters's set for it in Kase store.
Very instructive. Sorry about your camera. Has to be very disappointing. Because misery loves company, it's good (sort of) to hear that many pictures are made before a keeper materializes. Cheers1
bro you really kept my question in the video??? 😂😂😂😂
running a youtube channel with film...unlike digital...takes forever since not many ppl know that extra time it takes to take a photo (metering composition, settings focus, etc etc) after that post process/ in home or lab then getting it back scanning to digital format then cleaning the images for dust color correction, then incorporating that with script/dialog to explain that moment that scene as an artist combining that with the scanned photos and video editing it takes more than 2x 3x more effort than shooting with digital...but its worth it. thanks for a great input on your process. really appreciate it I kinda wish....Fujifilm makes a film camera like a rangefinder that can be fixed.... Pentax is hopefully making a film camera (hoping its not aesthetically pleasing...cough cough :D)
Go for the Minolta CLE!
do you know any good pace in ca that repair old film cameras. if not ca then internationally?
Film is so expensive now in the UK 😭 I am being so careful with how I shoot but it's becoming harder and harder to justify. Digital doesn't feel the same to me, it's heartbreaking
To bad about Lecia. I bought mine at a local thrift store for $10 in mint condition. The only issue I had with mine is while on vacation in Florida the camera would not advance. I called a friend of mine who is very knowledgeable with film cameras. He told me to gently tap the camera on a pillow. He explained that if the camera has not been serviced in a while the lubricant can become thick. Sure as sh!t it worked. So I'll be taking the camera to be serviced soon.

The CL and CLE are also not Leica built. Minolta built them. Support on them is lesser than a Leica M camera, even M2 and M3.
Hopefully Kodak’s recent stance of a roll for a “single digit” price helps things get better! (You know, the selling price of film is unregulated?!)
Waneer komt de video met de Porsche Stuttgart Tour?
what lab do you use? i’m in la and trying to find a new spot

Shooting film in Türkiye is almost like a dream for me.
I quit shooting normal 35mm c41 film. Everyone honestly shoot Start shooting and bulk loading their own ecn2 (500t,200t,250d) film. So many companies are making ecn2 films and labs are starting to do true enc2 developing which turns out to be cheaper than portra.

If you ever feel sad about the price of film in the US, Im about to exploit an immigrant friend in the USA cause film prices are half there stay toxic ev
Beside all cameras I had, Leicas were the most unreliable cameras I had. I also bought several Leica M bodies from sellers in good condition but all of them had problems with the shutter in the end. Since then I don't believe in the reliability in that brand.
rich kids
A CLA (Clean Lube & Adjust) on a camera unfortunately does not guarentee that the Shutter Speeds will be accurate, but the seller definately needed to disclose the fact that the camera's shutter is sticking in the Bulb setting. Most of the film cameras we are all using these days do not have accurate shutter speeds because of the age of the camera . I've had several of my SLR's tested by a friend who has a Shutter Speed testing device and none of them were even close to being accurate in the faster shutter speeds. I'm sharing this so when you are looking to buy a used film camera from somebody who throws out the term "CLA'd" in their listing, it doesn't mean the camera's shutter is accurate unless they have proof of that by having the camera tested.
You paid a lot of money for that German paperweight. You should’ve bought a Japanese camera.
if you're dead set on getting a leica, don't compromise and get an m3. i've constantly been told its the best and all other leicas adopted cost cutting measures during the manufacturing process
the outer banks project is especially poignant considering they'll be gone soon
Well that is one of the leicas that craps out easily 😅😢

I swear you have the worst luck with your cameras, Willem
what makes a pretentious photo to you?
hate to break it to you, but that's not a Leica 😂
Your "Leica" is not really a Leica, it's a product made by Minolta in Japan, not a Leica product. It carries Leica branding, yes. If you like M mount rangefinders, do yourself a favor and just get an actual Leica. An M2, M3, M4, heck an M6. When properly maintained, they are reliable. The CL, the Voigtlaender you had before... you're piling up expenses by now that probably would have allowed you to get an actual Leica.
material is getting hard to aquire for film...i will still shoot...luv film
