For years I've been using a 10'x10' Harbor Freight tarp and two collapsable tent poles. I secure one end of the tarp to my roof rack with bungy cords and then hook the tarp ends over the tent poles. I then use parachute cords to make a triangular arrangement out of each pole and 12" nails. I only put this up if I'm staying someplace for more than a day. Just cobbled it together and it's worked all these years. 🤠

We purchased this tent and really like it. It's simple to put up (I wouldn't have read the instructions if there were some). The best thing is that it allows lots of fresh air to circulate inside while sleeping and makes the sleeping in an SUV feel very roomy. We've been camping during a heavy downfall in summer and it was great. Because the bag is so small I didn't care too much about stuffing a wet tent back in there. When we got home we just hung it up on the clothesline to dry. I hate tent management (lol, putting up and pulling down) but I think this is an exception to that rule.

I have a similar canopy for my minivan. Before opening the liftgate, line up the part that will fit the tailgate when extended. Then open the liftgate slightly, making sure everything lines up while slowly raising the liftgate. Then secure everything.

I just got the same one and found it much easier to install than the Napier. And I was actually able to fit it back in the bag, but it’s tight. I’ll be using it for the next 6 months so hopefully it’ll hold up. Previously I had a Habitent that I loved and dried it off with a chamois before storing. Happy camping everyone!

I thought of getting one of those but the reason I went to camping in my car/minivan was because I didn’t like taking down wet tents and having to dry them out later. Having said that I took a long road trip last year in the summer and the heat really got to me. A tent like this would have helped.

@GrannyontheGo! I did a couple of car camping trips in March/April 2022. I had this tent and 9 inch battery operated box fan. I made a mental note that I would not be doing camping during the summer months cause it would be too hot. Between 11am-5pm I had to turn the fan on high. Maybe would work if I had another fan to pull air in/ other blow out. Yes I kept the tent open plus had all windows on a crack. (Just a thought to share)

I've reached that age where I can't sleep comfortably on the ground anymore and can't get up easily, either☹ but didn't like the idea of being confined in the SUV. I spend most of my camp time outdoors, so this looks like the perfect solution. I'd also get some mesh and magnets to create screens for the other windows and that would complete the set up.

Excellent video. I never thought much about suv tents, but it seems to be a more functional substitute for an awning. You can prop up the awning with telescoping poles and you'd have a great outdoor space, in addition to the mesh net cover for the suv. Thanks for trying it out. BTW, you wouldn't need this if you are constantly on the move. But airiness and shade make life a lot easier on your day off after hiking 15 miles two days in a row.

What you have is an extension to your sleeping area, called an "enclosure". What these enclosures do is allow you to extend your sleeping area to the outdoors, sit in your sleeping area and look outside. These enclosures are nice in the beginning, but the novelity can wear off real quick. Kind of restrictive for any other purpose and movement is very limited. The main thought behind these things area - for a one night stay, without setting up a tent, and no other privacy issues to deal with, they're great.

Glad you did this review. I've been looking at these for a couple years but as yet haven't selected which one to begin with. Used tents and tarps. The Airbed gave out in the Great Basin this past Nov and ended up on closed cell insulated pads, .75" each so I had 1.5 inches of insulation and padding. Worked great and i didn't miss the wind shaking the fabric. I haven't replaced thr airbed yet... It would be great if manufacturers began sending you these to review. I dunno if you want a ton of tents to store but... Back in SE and it's skeeter country. Ugh. Great fishing but the skeeters....

Can see the functionality of it, works like a big screen door for the back of an SUV. Seems like it would work well in the summer for ventilation and air flow. The question that comes to mind is when it rains what is there to prevent the rain water falling on the roof of the car from flowing down into the back into the car. Thanks Triston for showing this to us had never seen this before, worth considering for hot summer conditions.

Been thinking about getting one of these on and off the past couple years. I think I'll finally pull the trigger on this. Gonna order it come June :) Thanks for the vid review! I also have hiking gears so I intend to use the two hiking poles I have to help lift the end of the awning up a little more. Seem like plenty of room to set a camp chair and a cooler (I uses it as a table) underneath and just enjoy the scenery with. I suspect the tent will pack far far better if you zipped up the awning first before rolling it up. As for the condensation, I have a small microfiber towel that I dedicated just for tents when traveling and found it to not be that much of a hassle. Seem like it would be even less of a hassle with this setup since there's nothing touching the ground thus no need to wipe the dirts off too. Just a lil quick wipe of the top before packing then hang the lil towel inside to dry off while driving off.

I had one of these kind of tents I thought would be a good thing to have. Boy was I wrong. Mine was the kind that gave more floor space to place a cot or a cook stove on a table. The thing had a butt load of tent pegs and hooks and straps...then after I had it set up the next day I found I needed to go into town and I looked at this thing attached to my car. The first rain storm I got flooded out, it collected over 20 gallons of water and Everything inside was soaked. All in all the thing was a pain in the ass.

Enjoyed this, and would definitely like an update some time. I'm testing out the Napier Sportz Cove soon. One important issue is the composition of the fabric. It determines whether water will be completely blocked or just resisted. You don't want water seeping through the main fabric in heavy rain, sealed seams or not. Also good to know: the grade of zipper. You can tell a lot by look and feel of course, but it's good to know the basic materials of tents. No pulls on the ties is another sign of cheapness.

We like to camp in the back of our van, and we have the Napier version of this. I bought it on sale. It adds only a tiny bit of extra room, but a lot of ventilation. The canopy is really handy as shelter in light rain. Easy to put on and off, after the first time, and once you've figured which way is up, and so forth. Just as you said, depending on the time of year, it's a handy thing.

I have a travel trailer i pull with my 2002 yukon and I discovered your channel and decided to take a trip to Florida from Delaware over thanksgiving week and suv camp, I bought a bluetti for power and 12v refrigerator and I know exactly what you mean about arriving to camp and no set required; you opened a new world for me of course it's not something I would do in the summer as it's so stinking hot and humid here but other season's it's wonderful , i've never did any tent camping just started camping as a whole about 6 years ago and i'm almost 60. It takes about 1-2 hours to set up trailer when I get to camp and I only have to pull out chair when in my suv, it's great. I think I might get one of those tents for more ventilation for the shoulder months just have to figure out how to keep the dogs inside:) Oh one more thing don't forget to turn off your dome light as I left my hatch window open during the day and didn't realize the inside lights were on because it was sunny out and depleted my battery.

I believe if you take a few minutes to spray tent 💦 repellent that would be most beneficial for seepage avoidance. Might want to tie the top area down more securely so rain won’t trickle down from rooftop.

Looks like the tent was very adjustable for being generic, especially given the price. You were able to make it fit your Suburban pretty well. Nice review.

I've seen these around for awhile and have never pulled the trigger on one. I agree with your general take that its just one more thing to futz with setting up. The reason I SUV camp rather than tent camp is so I can just pull over at the end of the day and be instantly ready to sleep. This kind of kills that flexibility. I also move sites every day (mostly) and I think I'd get annoyed setting this up and taking it down over and over. I have a 30 second rule of thumb, that generally speaking, if something takes more than 30 seconds to set up, I notice I don't tend to use it every day. Sometimes that's fine if its not something I need every day, I don't need daily showers or to cook an elaborate hot meal daily, so a little more setup and takedown is tolerable. But if its something I'm using daily like my bed, I want it to be maximally convenient. It needs to set up and break down with a minimum of fuss. I've noticed if I don't proactively plan for convenience, for me it becomes too tempting to occasionally opt out of camping and grab a hotel room during a long road trip, which kills your budget and makes it less likely you'll take frequent trips. My goal is to make car camping significantly more convenient than getting a hotel so I never get tempted Anyway, no judgement on people who settle in to a campsite for a few days and are willing to invest a little time to have an extra nice and roomy setup. It really boils down to camp style and knowing yourself and what works for you

I have Marmot tent for car camping. It's tape sealed and have never given a moment's trouble. This was a very good PART #1 Review of this little tent. PART #2 Repeat setting it up alone and showing it a few days later. In the 25mph winds with 40mph gusts of the Arizona deserts.😎

Cool video! I used to have a Honda Element and I added the Honda Cabana tent on the back. It was very similar to this one. Now I sleep in my FJ with no tent attached. I got a Kodiak canvas tent a couple years ago. I was surprised how much nicer a canvas tent is compared to a noisy nylon tent. The canvas is sturdy and quiet. Its also somewhat bulky though. The canvas breaths much better! I haven't had condensation. I highly recommend Kodiak and Springbar canvas tents for the times you are staying in one base camp for a few nights.

Did you get a truck specific tent or use one of these SUV ones? I have an 04 Tacoma with the 5ft bed. I'm short enough to sleep diagonally with a platform above the wheel wells but have been wanting a secondary setup for sleeping lengthwise so 2ppl can fit.

I camp in my minivan with a separate shelter for eating/cooking or relaxing in a chair (taking a nap!). These items have not appealed to me but I see how it can give the inside of the vehicle a lot of fresh air and openness. For hot summer nights it may be an advantage. So 4 or 5 minutes for setting or striking the shelter by yourself is not a problem, also the flapping of canvas, the pitter patter of rain or some wind is a campsite lullaby for me. The next question is what can you get at the high price range when your purchase will have greater expectations.

I have a 4runner. I plan to get canopy fittings, poles and a few large uv mosquitoe netting. Of course some spare tarps for when it rains to make the room water proof. This will create a large room for cooking, hanging out etc.

I got one of the type that’s an enclosed tent behind my SUV. I discovered that I can’t open or close my tailgate from inside either of the vehicles I camp in. I go in and out through the side door of my vehicle, I only use the back gate for loading or unloading. The particular tent I got has a very high threshold that I tripped over several times, and I fell out of the tent twice, once right on my face. Partly it was due to the angle of the tent with poor visibility as I was carrying something. I ended up selling it to a couple who were very happy with it. I think these can work very well for some people, but it certainly doesn’t suit my camping style.

I have a Napier tent that attaches over the rear hatch of my Toyota Prius. I'm using it for the first time in about 10 days for a week-long girls campout. Taking a cot to keep me off the ground for comfort. Can't wait to try it. They retail at $399 - the Sports to Go RV Tent. I purchased some heavy duty magnets from Amazon just in case I need to close up any gaps.

I was pondering making something like this years ago, with a wood folding platform extension thing that would stick out the back of the SUV. Pretty cool idea but I can see rain running in from the roof so maybe better for dry weather.

From looking at videos, rain coming in off of the roof is also a concern. Maybe we can find some reviews specific to this part of the design.
