i have been told by coil people that turns ration primary to secondary makes a huge difference but will not really measure resistance levels and some coils have different core materials as in metals

Hey Jim, right, turns ratio, wire diameter, wind quality, core lamination material, and probably more all effect output and longevity. There's a lot that goes into it, thats for sure! ~Mike

Excellent demonstration. It is much harder to throw a spark at higher pressure, which occurs at low rpm and wide throttle, such as on a freeway on-ramp. My 1996 Plymouth 2.4 L DOHC started missing badly in those conditions, which stopped when I let off the throttle. I reduced the spark gaps from 60 mil to 50 mil, per a TSB for the turbo version of that engine (even higher pressure), and no more misfires. In contrast, sparks easily jump many feet in a high vacuum chamber thru the rarified air, which is easily ionized. BTW, my PCM took a hard hit in an accident, so perhaps a crack in a trace which controls spark or such. Re snake-oil plugs, the old Split-fire ads said they tested normal plugs on a dyno, then Split-fire and measured more engine power. Engine was cold in 1st run, then warmed-up in the Split-fire run.

Back in the 1960's, OEM's ran non-resistor spark plugs because contact point ign systems put out all of 25K Volts and needed all the help they could get! My parents 1960 Chevy Bel-Air 283 cu in, 2 speed powerglide used A/C 45S spark plugs. However, I can testify to the noisy AM radio at night when the radio signal was reduced in power due to some government regulation back in the 30's or 40's. Really sucked! Throw in arcing "generator" brushes and "vibrating contact voltage regulators" and.....well you get the picture. When resistor plugs came along some of those (small) early ign systems would misfire, usually under load foot-to-the-floor driving. Point bounce wss s whole different problem! Course there was also the "in-line" ign resistor (ballast or like GM, a LONG wire) to lower the primary ign voltage from 12 volts to 6 volts going into the ign coil. Slowly the resistor plug became better built quality so manufacturers substituted resistor plugs for non resistor plugs in their inventory. Less radio noise at night. Then came resistor ign wires (distributor cap to spark plug) and their quality became better like the spark plugs. A/C R45S spark plugs and Delco ign wires became the go to on GM vehicles. Almost totally quiet AM radios (all we had till mid to late 60's) at night. Along came "transistorized" ign systems followed by all the OEM Electronic Ignition Systems" Alternators, better built AM/FM Stereo radios and we thought we were styling!.......till "Computer Controlled Powertrain Management Systems." A whole new ballgame! And look at vehicles now! Stay with OEM coils and plugs! Especially in Ford F250 5.4L 2 Valve V8 and F350 - 550 6.8L 2 Valve V10's. Hope you're all doing well.

resistor plugs started way before computers to help with radio interference in passenger cars to go along with resistor wire or plug caps

Insane! From measuring resistance of an intended open circuit 😜 to remotely lighting the light on a cordless drill....lmao! I know lots of mechanics that would never believe a spark plug can damage the electronics of a vehicle!

Found your resistor plug interesting. I have worked on older farm tractors with six volt coil. The wrong plugs usually create no start or lots of miss fires. Goes back to put the right plug and wires in.

Also learned on antique farm tractors with magnetos , use copper core spark plug wires .

You didn't mention how when a car was developed, they didn't have the long term testing on the engine to determine if the spark plugs could be upgraded with improvements. They have this with oil on some cars.

Ya this was awesome. I'd like to see a fuel pump case study of sorts

gunships in vietnam could sniff vehicles out when they were running under jungle canopy by listening for this noise. i am not an EM specialist but always learning like you all, and enjoy your presentations. youve almost got the the point of developing basic radar 😎

I don't know how you guys have got to the conclusion that the higher pressure requires higher kV. The test showed the oposite, i.e. the higher pressure the lower kV is needed to reach "proper" kV. It seems like the logic failed here.

You guys performed a test which didn't confirm that "Performance coils are better", so couple of sentences later you show it as "confirmed". It's lame to me.

I guess that depends on the definition of performance coil to you. We tested what we could test, KV output and burn time in relation to load changes. You can be your own judge of the data and results, of course. ~Mike
