The first PS2 game I loaded on the Steam Deck is Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks. Is was one of those games I loved in the PS2 times and it never got a remake or even something similar. So it was a blast being able to play it again in the Steam Deck!

Nice list of games! That's awesome that you can emulate PS2 games on the Deck! Can't wait to see what other consoles you'll try to emulate next... Dreamcast maybe? Vice City is my favorite in the series and for me nothing beats the vibe of the era of that game! Evil Dead, Hell yeah! I'm a huge Bruce fan so of course I like everything in that franchise! Great video and keep up the good work!

Oh yeah it's bonkers being able to run so many games from so many generations and PS2 does pretty well for the most part! Dreamcast games are DEFINITELY a possibility for a future video. I met Bruce once at a book signing here in Columbus and he's just such a chill dude! Thanks as always, homie :)

The Steam Deck aspect ratio is 16X10, I believe but Silent Hill 2 stretched out still looks great. I can’t tell the difference, despite being a 4:3 game. This is a great sign for other PS2 games on the Deck. Thanks so much for doing the test!

Emulating Silent Hill 2 on the PS2 looks pretty great, but personally, when my machine arrives, I'll be more interested to see if I can get the PC version with the Enhanced Edition mod running on the Steam Deck.

I love that you’re putting the steam deck through it’s paces and it doesn’t seem like anything is game breaking as far as graphics, frame rate, aspect ratio and weird lines on the PS2 emulation. What you said that really spoke volumes was how much you’re enjoying it and how much you are wanting to try everything on it. Great video. Quick tip if you have a keyboard connected or if you want to customize a button on your controller, you can set set or press F6 to cycle through widescreen modes in certain pcsx2 games with the option on the Deck.

I recently learned there is a PS2 remake of Phantasy 2 (my favorite Genesis game) exclusive to Japan, and the is a fan translated version of that. I think that will be my first emulated Deck experience.

Oh that's a cool use case! I love that you can find fan translations for various emulated titles- Pretty sure there was a Yakuza title exclusive to the PSP that was translated to English after it never got a release here.

I think the Silent Hill effect might have come from the fact that for the greatest hits version (called directors cut in EU) they added an effect to make it look like it was on film stock

Great video. I haven't emulated ps2 yet on my deck. I have setup Dreamcast emulation and it work great. For Dreamcast set the video cable setting to vga.

So you used another ps2 emulator not on Emudeck? The Emudeck one doesn’t work for me it says I didn’t have the Bios when I did put the Bios in the appropriate folder.

Well I (think) Emudeck installs PCSX2 by default but as I recall I had to track down the BIOS for it even though it was installed as part of that package. Same for the PS1 I believe so if it's not working maybe try a different model's BIOS? Think I had to try a couple of different ones before it would take myself.

You haven't beaten shadow of the colossus!? I feel sorry the joy you're missing. That game is art.

I've only emulated a few PS2 games- The only real problem I'm having is that I'm getting a lot of vertical lines during FMV sequences on Ar Tonelico, as well as some unwanted lines on character art.

That's unfortunate- I WAS able to rectify the lines problem on Silent Hill 2 after enabling auto hacks within the PCSX2 configuration so maybe that'd be worth a shot?

@@YourPlayer2 Thanks for your help- after I made my comment I set the resolution to 3x/1080 and that fixed the FMV issue, then turned off manual hacks which did fix the character artwork issue. Looks like the game is running well now.

Some of these games did have native versions on PC or other platforms that may make more sense to run. MGS2, Silent Hill 2, and GTA Vice City (original not trilogy version). Some were even on steam at one point but delisted. They may be a bit harder to get a hold of but in most cases I’d say about equal with the effort in emulation.

They do indeed! Although I don't think you can easily grab Silent HIll 2 from the Steam store so might take a bit of work to get it running. Personally I don't think I'm going to install Windows since so much runs on it already but it's cool that people have the option! For now I'll probably stick with PS2 emulation

Omg with SOTC as my favorite game of all time, watching the stab getting held longer than the foot shift was infuriating in a way I never knew it would be haha

@@YourPlayer2 Well, the foot shift is the signal you'll do full damage if you stab, now you know! Took me hours and hours to figure it out but that was way before LPs so I've never seen a beginner play now that I'm on the other side haha

Forgot to ask, are you running these at 2X resolution? Other than aspect ratio, did you leave the emulator settings alone for PS2? As a fellow survival horror fan, would love to see how games like Fatal Frame and Haunting Ground play on the Deck. I’m Q3, so looking forward to trying them out!

@@YourPlayer2 Yeah, SH2 might be one of the first PS2 games I play on the Deck. The PS2 was kind of the last golden age for survival horror…so many good titles and even niche ones like Rule of Rose, The Suffering, Clock Tower 3, etc. Of course, some of these are available on OG Xbox too but you hear less about emulating for that system than you do for PS2. Not sure why.

I would agree although I still haven't played Rule of Rose- Not gonna pay like 500 dollars for it though that's for sure :p There have been a few modern horror games I've been into though like The Quarry, The Medium, and I'm about to grab Madison for the PS5! Did you try using power tools? Recently saw someone cover All twisted Metals on the steam deck and for Twisted Metal Black they turned off SMT after one of their viewers recommended it in a previous video and they went from 40-60 fps to a constant 60fps! Crazy fps improvement. Heard people reporting same numbers when running dolphin for wii games too Wonder if it'd fix the stuttering problems for God of War and Shadow of the Colossus

Hey Josh, I don't own a Steam Deck but I managed to buy a Pre-Owned PS2 2 years ago, it's by far my favorite console and last month I bought Resident Evil Code Veronica X. I haven't tested it yet but the disc is in great condition. It's nice to see a portable system that can handle some PS2 Games. Take care. :)

Thanks a bunch, man! Mmm, I haven't encountered it myself so hard to say. Could be settings that need adjusted or maybe try a SD card with a higher speed rating? I mean I can't imagine it needs to push THAT much but maybe for games that were especially big or had a lot of FMV content it makes a difference.

Great video! Silent Hill 2 is a classic, looks like it works well on Steam Deck. Have you tride Solent Hill 4, bet that'd look good too. I always thought SH4 waa a really underrated game.

Aside from those weird lines it looks/plays great! I HAVE beaten Silent Hill 4 but haven't tried it on the Deck just yet I don't think. And agreed- even though people thought it wasn't a 'real' Silent Hill game initially apparently it totally was and those first-person sequences were WAY unnerving in the apartment. I HATED looking through the peephole.

The game shop I got it ftom on day of release were giving away a SE4 strategy guide book with it if you'd pre ordered It was such a good illustrated guide. I kind of miss those days queuing up to get a hot new game or console - it waa fun to just be there. We don't really have stuff like that now do we?

Sadly I haven't tried it yet so I can't really speak to it with any authority. I'm pretty sure you'd need a BIOS for the PS3, but at some point I'll have to do a video on this and test for myself!

Just about to dive into emulation with my Deck now. Can't wait to (hopefully) get Ghost Recon 2 working! I know it's much more arcade-y than the Xbox version, but it's a classic from simpler days. Definitely still enjoyable, and I really hope Ubisoft someday would pull an "MCC" type move, and remaster all their old games, porting them across platforms and maybe even doing some remasters/reskins for an "anniversary" celebration.

I remember hanging out with all my friends on the weekends and playing Battlefront II, Halo 2 & 3, Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon, Medal of Honor, (I actually *really* liked Rising Sun, with the suppressed Welrod pistol) The Two Towers (from when EA actually had good games lol) Jedi Outcast, Rogue Squadron... I'm disappointed those days are gone, but the memories still remain. :)

@@YourPlayer2 UPDATE: Ghost Recon 2 plays almost flawlessly through Dolphin! The PS2 version is absolute crap though. Looks like you're viewing the game through a million little crystals. Tried all the different rendering options, but it's just bad. Really bad. The GC version in comparison was so clear and sharp. Just 10/10 how I remembered it. FPS does drop here and there depending on if you're looking towards the edge or the middle of the map, but that's something I've always experienced with emulated FPS games. Now to try and get the other classics to work. (Side Note: I actually got GRAW 1 (native PC version) to run, and it controls quite well. Some of the controls are legitimately broken, but you can still control your squad from the tactical map, just not in first person. Still trying to get GRAW 2 to run, but keeps crashing on startup. Might be a problem with Nvidia Physx according to PCGamingWiki.)

what is the battery life like on the deck when running PS2 games? is it efficient?

Hmmm, maybe try a different BIOS file? Or check reddit and see if anyone else has encountered similar issues with the games you're trying to emulate.

The only PS2 game I've had an issue playing on the deck is Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII and PS1 emulation for the time being, seems broken. I can't get the emu to see my bios.

Dude the PS2 is honestly one of my favorite systems to play on here. It's just nuts that these games I have so many fond memories with from High School can be played in the handheld format!

I installed pcsx2 a few days ago because I wanted to play Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance 1-2, Champions of Norrath and GTA 3/VC/SA but unfortunately I'm looking at removing it now because it seems to matter what settings I use, the framerate is rather poor, like mostly in the low 20's with occasional jumps to 30+ and dips to the teens. I've tried all sorts of things but no joy. a shame really (how you got that framerate in Vice city is utterly beyond me!!)

Noooooo! I just ordered my steam deck and was so excited to try Baldurs and play Champions of Norrath/RTA for the first time in years. I'm not giving up, I will get them to work somehow 🤣

As I understand it, dips in FPS while emulating PS2 actually slow the gameplay. Basically, if you dip down to 40 FPS, you are playing in slow-mo. When emulating PS2, you should be targeting a locked 60 FPS, even more than usual because there is more than a cosmetic impact. I would have liked to see you test Burnout 3.

For silent hill 2, it's a known issue. Try: "unscale point line hack" in opengl hardware mode

LoL VERY quick update- I had the box checked for manual hacks which disabled automatic ones which was odd so I UN-checked it and now the lines are gone! You're an absolute legend :D

When you have emulation station setup use the standalone core as i find i get 60fps and a quick drop to 57fps on God of war 2.

Good info to have! I mostly just went with the default Emudeck setup but I need to try out the successor.

The xemu xbox emulator outright crashes or looks off with unsupported games and patches will fix it (I meant updates mainly). With PCSX2 and RPCS3 it is different. The PS2 emu has real issues imo. RPCS3 is the same type as xbox where it will be fixed with updates but here games like GTA 4 will make you infinitely fall down through the world or the right setting chosen will break consistent audio. In short the PS2 emu has really unique issues to run flawlessly vs the others including Dolphin and PPSSPP which are 10/10

I haven't tried xemu yet but based on this maybe it's good that I haven't! I've had some weird graphical issues here and there in certain titles but for the most part it's been playable for me. I have NOT tried PS3 emu yet but I'm guessing that'll be even more hit-or-miss. PPSSPP has been VERY stable for me though!

*God of War is my childhood favorite. Im definitely buying a Steam Deck*

7:46 I have all the original GTA games from 1&2 to III, VC, SA, to IV I think I must have bought them years ago on a sale. Maybe they got removed from the store after that. @@YourPlayer2 I also own the og trilogy on steam, but i prefer to emulate the ps2 versions purely for the atmosphere. The og trilogy runs great on the deck with the definitive edition project mod installed(adds controller support and other fixes). But even with ps2 effects mods and higher res, the og ps2 versions are still the best visually to me!

@@YourPlayer2 they removed them from the steam store because they wanted people to buy the remaster instead, but they got a lot of backlash because they did that, but then the remaster was ass. So they brought them back for a while, but maybe they've already taken them back down

You could play the original PC version of Vice City on Steam Deck if you bought it on Steam before Rockstar removed it.

does it run well? I have the bundle that had everything from 3 all the way to the first hd universe gta, but I didn't wanna bother trying because I thought it would have issues. I have san andreas like I said, but I chose to emulate it instead

the only game i desperately need on the deck is skate 2. as of now it doesnt run on the deck and (at least on my pc) runs very jank lol

Ah, fair enough.

for shadows of the colossus, I recommend you to play the ps3 version and downscale it to 720p through rpcs3 patches and you will get better performance than the ps2 version generally all ps2 classics that got ported to the ps3 will run better on rpcs3 than pcsx2

Indeed! So far it's been a pretty smooth experience and it's just so cool diving into favorites from that era on a handheld :) Hope you've been well, Lit!

Just so everyone knows, God of War and God of War 2 had HD versions released on PS3 that run very well on the steam deck in RPCS3 and they both looks better and perform better than the PS2 versions. They stay locked at 60fps with my TDP turned all the way down to 7 watts which gives me 5-6 hours of battery life playing them.

Would be helpful, to mention the most legitimate way of getting a ps2 Bios for Low Level Emulation. i.e.. Ripping from your personaly owned PS2. rather than first directing people to download from download sites (which is 100% illegal in most countries), also where the file or games downloaded from those sites could potentially contain viruses/malware if they accidentally go to wrong website. In general love your emulation content. It has really made me want to get a steam deck for emulation.. Would love to have it to play pcsx2 and other emulators on the go, with a device more powerful than my phone, or having to bring out the laptop.

Am I the only one who’s had crap performance on ps2? Vice city dips to like 40fps pretty regularly.

@@YourPlayer2 in case it helps anyone else, I'm getting good performance in most games by following the configuration in the phawx's tutorial. I think the key thing was setting crc hacks to aggressive.

Ya know, I have a conflicted relationship with Biomutant- I got it at launch on the Series X as a birthday present and I thought it was GORGEOUS but the constant narration for all the dialog started to get to me after a bit :p But I might have to give it another shot on the Deck since I'm sure it's been updated since then!
