Testing out a Sony Trinitron 20" CRT TV with VCR (Made in 1996)
Ғылым және технология
I recently bought an older Sony Trinitron CRT TV from an estate sale for $28 and wanted to do a full test on camera so I set up the Super Nintendo and pull out the VHS tapes.
This Sony is from 1996 and the model number is KV-20VM30.
It is a 20 inch Trinitron with an internal VCR that works great. It actually did eat my Whoopi Goldberg classic but I think it was my fault - I need to test out a null tape and see if it does it again. (I pressed STOP and the cassette barely came out but I think the tape was still wound up and I tried to pull it out of the VCR early).
The TV accepts composite RCA cables but only mono sound so I had to buy an adapter from stereo composite to mono composite.
TV works flawlessly and the Super Nintendo works amazing - I just bought that last week on eBay for $129 (plus tax and shipping) and it has a bit of yellowage but was disclosed in the listing. Works flawlessly and the two controllers do as well.
I also just bought a Super Mario World cartridge for $25 on OfferUp and it works as well. My next move is to buy a video capture device so that I can start screen recording walkthroughs and all that fun stuff. I'd love to go through this game completely before I buy another.
I've only been collecting VHS tapes for a few weeks and this is why I was attracted to this particular model of the Sony and I didn't know how much it cost when I saw it at an estate sale online. I was pleasantly surprised when I got to the sale and saw the $28 sticker. These have ranged from $0.50 to $1.59 from estate sales to Goodwill and thrift stores. I'm trying to only buy movies from the 1990s as a bit of a 90s collection.

Thank you so much! And yeah, whenever I bought a Super Nintendo last year I went to an estate sale to grab an old TV and this was the first one I found. I found out later that these Sonys are hot commodities! Glad I lucked out on the first try, it was $28 if I remember correctly.
Man, this is what my 19" Toshiba CRT/VCR combo unit wishes it could be. Just the same, moment I saw it after walking to the town Thrift Store looking to rebuild my DVD/VHS collection...I knew I was taking the bus home, and I didn't care about the looks I got considering I paid 12 bucks for it, in 2023, in Canadian Loonies. Also, love the shirt, my dude.

Haha too funny, riding on a bus with a CRT - hey I think it's worth it. Especially if that's the best way to get around town. I think these things are going to be hard to find soon so might as well find the best you can while people are still trying to throw them out. I now have 4 CRT TVs and 1 Sony LCD Projection TV - I'm about to clean them up and sell some of them. Keeping the Sony Trinitron and will probably keep one more but rotate it out as I find better ones. For now I'll probably keep the Toshiba 32" I found recently (for $20!) because it's a nice one and I don't feel like moving it again for awhile haha Glad you noticed the shirt too!
I always found crt tvs really interesting. Even as a kid it was like a magnifying glass to me. I had many crt tvs. I threw my last one out in 2019. Everything was failing on it. I had it for 17 years. I had the same Sylvania TV you have. The vcr was crap and chewed on my tapes. I only had it for two years. The only good thing was i could watch TV and dvds with it in my bedroom.

Tube TVs often had surprisingly beefy speakers, because the large chassis afforded to include them. I love the sound quality of my 32" widescreen Panasonic Quintrix CRT telly. Althought I would love to get a smaller 4:3 set. The Quintrix takes a lot of space and it weighs 60 kg / 132 lbs! The picture quality is lovely too, although its geometry could be better.

I’ve been thinking about getting one of these old vintage TVs with the built in VCR. Yes, it’d take up space and not really be necessary since I already have a modern smart TV in my room. But there’s this nostalgia about these vintage VCR TV types for me. And I’m beginning to appreciate the durability of VHS tapes, in terms of how DVDs start skipping from a few scratches over time by comparison.
@JaWayne

Yeah I've been playing hundreds of tapes and only a small percentage - maybe 1-3% of them have trouble playing. I'm actually looking at my death pile right now: I have 24 that broke or didn't play right out of hundreds that I've gone through (I play all of the tapes through to ensure they actually work). Those are some good odds!
Hey Jacob, for current-gen gaming consoles and Blu-ray players you can get an 'HDMI to RF' modulator like from Radio Shack or any online electronic parts vendor... Those are not really expensive at all. Then just pick up all the required cables that you'll need to hook everything up. The reason why I recommend RF over A/V composite, is because RF supports a HIGHER bandwidth. Just make shure the RF coaxial cable you'll be getting is TRIPLE-SHIELDED to prevent noise and artifacts. My friends and I used to do this kinda method to hook up our PS3s and Xbox 360s to older CRTs that don't even support A/V input jacks, and the picture/sound quality KICKS ASS. Everything looks at least 3 or 4 times better than compared to just hookin' up the game consoles up with the included stock A/V composite cables. The graphics looked SO sharp, that they have like a newspaper cut-out quality to them. And the colors will literally POP right off the screen. The modulator will also convert the mono to semi-stereo. You will NOT be needing a separate audio Y adapter for the sound. Tho it will still not be 100% true stereo (cuz your TV only has a single speaker), the processing from digital to analog will no doubt BOOST the audio signal quality significantly. You will begin to notice MUCH clearer/louder audio output from your TV. Hope this helps!

Wow, what the heck - this is all really neat and I appreciate the information! I'll have to try this out and let you know what I think. Maybe I can make a separate video on this exact process - of hooking it up with those cables.

Honestly, they take up so much space - I'd recommend only having one or two at a time You can play consoles on the one you like the best and sell the other one, then when you find an even better model, sell the lesser of the two. It will not only fund your collection (you can probably buy some old games/consoles too with that money) but you'll not have a pile of TVs taking up space. I'd wait to move out before filling your place with these things.
For me 20 inches for a crt is the sweet spot but 32inch sets are incredible especially Toshiba and Panasonic sets you should get a composite switcher for yours get a pelican hd system switcher it looses no image quality

@@joshuapowell1868 Awesome - thank you for the information! I'll try that out on the broken tapes.
It's sad to see they put a 4-head VCR in that nice TV. Hi-Fi sound provided by 6-head VCRs considerably improves the sound output. Without it, it's almost unbearable to watch EP-recorded tapes, for example (as long as the original recording was made in such a VCR as well).
@JaWayne
Жыл бұрын
That's crazy, I didn't know all of that. And yeah it's a shame the VCR is eating tapes. Not really sure what to do. Should I use the liquid cleaner solution in the tape cleaner? I actually have some of that from decades ago.
@CapTVchilenaShootingStarMax

@@JaWayne I don't think the heads have any influence regarding the VCR eating tapes. Perhaps the pinch rollers inside are getting sticky and need replacement, or there's an issue with a belt.

That's awesome! I didn't know that. I don't even know how I'd work on this VCR though since it's inside the TV frame. Does it drop down so you can work on it? Or do you have to take out the tube above it first?
@joshuapowell1868

You have to take out the chassis to replace belt because it's a combo tv VCR it's going to be a big job to get out but it can be done if you know how to work on one now if you don't know what am saying you can go online and say how to replace a belt in VCR tv combo and your tv is a combo you have to put that down to pull up the video's online what you need to see

It's actually better on these TVs if you're playing the old stuff - as you convert it to 1080 it actually causes a slight delay and you have to figure out the controls again. But I also am not a gamer so that's only my limited opinion. Maybe you're right! :)

It's fine, stop giving out misinformation. It's tilted from the Earth's magnetic field, if you keep rotating the set it will straighten out but that might not be an option if it's to go inside a cabinet or along a certain wall, it's just something people put up with as you can't tell watching videos. Tilt correction didn't come out until early 2000's flat screens and over 27" in size.

It is a typical european analoge connection for RGB Video it is similar to your yuv component cables that are more popular in the usa than in europe but we had that rgb connection for best picture qualit way earlier than you i think.. i think back in the they the best option for you was to look for a s-video connection if you want to get a better signal than RF and composite (yellow) I am not shure if the us snes carries rgb from stock without mods .. for europen it delivers the best picture .. if you want to use upscalers like framemeister, ossc, retrotink.. good shielded rgb scart cables are almost mandatory to use otherwise you wont get very happy with modee flat tvs... but as well my bang & olufsen crt never looked that good if i woule not use good rgb scart cables on it.. read the wikipedia page for scart .. but hey you had worse picture back in the day but you always had 60hz we got 60 hz since ps2 era as i remember.. before videogaming was just 50hz in europe
