I think you would probably get a faster burn by using a little more PN. I know that 75/15/10 is the usual mix and I've seen 74.6/13.5/11.9 claimed to be optimum, but I watched a lecture by a professor (who knows more chemistry than me) and his reaction equation gives the theoretical stoichiometric proportions as 78/12/10. I have also heard (so it may or may not be correct) that Swiss brand black powder uses 77% PN. I have not done any experimenting myself - but it might be something for you to play around with.

75.5 , 14.5 , 10 . Use only High quality finely milled charcoal ( willow or cedar ) Mill for 8 hrs . Use 91 alcohol to make a ball that just barely sticks together . Grate through heavy kitchen strainer to make aprox. FFFg. . spread on a cookie sheet to dry for a couple of Hrs. . This stuff doesn't burn ....It POOFS instantly .

What do you think of granulating flash powder?

I’ve never done it but I haven’t seen a video on that before. I personally wouldn’t because it works fine the way it comes out and I don’t use it for anything other than the salute.

I granulate Thunder #3 and MGAL based flash, adding +3% dextrin. It's a lot less dusty, flows great, and makes filling a bunch of inserts easier and faster. Some of the shells I build have 50+ inserts though, but if your only filling a couple salutes or a bottom shot then it might not be worth the time.

@@nokia5376 so I just did a test of my corned black powder. I didn’t even break it up all that well and it’s still burned pretty fast. I’m actually gonna be posting a video here soon about it. What ratio did you use for bp?

Good powder should ignite fast with just a match. A torch test is misleading. Try screening the charcoal ultra fine before putting everything into the ball mill. Run the mill at least 10 hours with 20 being better. Spread out some dust in a line and hold a match at one end. If it goes super fast you're ready for pucking, etc..

@@nokia5376 so what I would do is use a very fine mesh screen and screen mix them which is what I have done before but you can make a ball mill. I showed a video on how I made mine a few years ago.

@@nokia5376 Yes, GOOD way is use the grinder to grind each individual chem then mix them together in a bowl BETTER way is to screen mix them BEST way is to use the ball mill for hours and it will mix everything by crushing the powders.

I use the same alcohol water mix but with dextrin you want to use hot water to activate the dextrin but I do have willow airfloat charcoal as well but I made my own red cedar that’s in this video so I have a lot of it. Now for the chems I bought these years ago and have been just using them until they run out so I can buy new ones. It works just but little by little the residue is showing up and I’ve already baked my Kno3 prior to this. I can try to mill it for hours like you mentioned just to see.
