Testing every utility knife, DeWalt, Stanley, Klein Tools, Irwin, Milwaukee, ToughBuilt, Fiskars Pro

Utility blades have been one of the most useful tools on the job, and in this video I aim to figure out which is the best as far as portability, features, and feel, in this video I explore subjective attributes, in a future video well put them to the test and explore the objective attributes.

    Stanley 10-499 Been using the same one I purchased in 1996. I use it while doing wood floor work since 1996. Used and abused. I did have to replace the holder for the extra blades from a new model. Slim and effective, extra blades in hand literally. Personally I loath most ergonomic oversized, over engineered hand tools. There is genius in simplicity. I tried one of the oversized type and it hasn't been used in 20 years.

    I have the folding version of the DeWalt and find it pretty good. I have switched to the Milwaukee, however, because it is a little slimmer but can still hold an extra blade in the handle. Another feature I prefer is a bright color so that I am less likely to overlook it when packing up my tools at a worksite. I've left behind a couple of flashlights now and then because of the color.

    Thnx alot! I really wanted to believe the Thoughbuild is good but had my doubts about the practicality and thickness of the knife. You demonstrated it exactly as I would use it. The Milwaukee it will be! But unfortunately it's not available in The Netherlands at the moment. So I have to wait.

    Canadian Tire Mastercraft. I liked it enough to have a bunch sent to me in Asia. Button lock, belt clip and lanyard hole. The knife and a few blades 9.99 cnd.

    I've had the same Stanley 10-499 for over 10 years cannot recommend it enough for actually using on the job. Have never carried it as a personal pocket knife due to it's size. Wish they made a version that was exactly the same without the string cutter, i have never needed this feature even when using string and sometimes it gets snagged on materials.

    at least you should be aware of the Tirant Razor V3 which is a so-called *EDC* folding utility knife, with the emphasis on "edc". i carry it all the time wherever i go, even at home indoors sitting at my office desk/PC like right now. best blade to have on you, even beyond work.

    My Fiskars Pro Compact doesn’t have the problems mentioned. Fits my large hand perfectly, comes out easily as the clip side is flat and is a quality product. I don’t need a large handle as it (and others of this size) are my EDC, used mostly for opening amazon boxes and cutting smaller items. It’s currently my favorite utility knife.

  • @james_gatlin

    The blade itself is replaceable and different brands will provide different durability, strength, and so on, but that is a matter of blade brand, no the utility knife itself.

    Th klein is also aluminum. The klein also failed on me 2 times at the belt clip and the construction doesn't make it favorable to repair.

    There is no cast iron anywhere here. You must mean cast alloy. The 10-499 is the champ especially if have to use it for hours. My pocket tops are already shredded from tape clips. I don’t need another clip on. If you use a utility knife all day a dedicated sheath is a good idea

  • @james_gatlin

    @james_gatlin

    Correct, i use iron as a general term, given that all magnetic alloys are made of an iron mix, (the ones i mentioned are magnetic) but it may be better to say its cast alloy, and yes the 10-499 is now my favorite toolbox blade.

    I think the fiskars does not get the love it deserves. When you carry a utility knife as an EDC your review might be fair but when you actually do real work with a knife it is a totally different story. You want the grip and ergonomics of the fiskars when, for example, cutting thick shingles with a hooked blade and not the toys that fit nicely in your pocket.

    Good take, i did however take it to a job site recently working on heavy equipment, I used it for about three days on some pretty harsh conditions, unfortunately, it is not flimsy, and has taken quite a bit of damage compared to what the Milwaukee would have, it’s good, certainly better than most all other nearly disposable ones, but the Milwaukee still proves to be the most durable
