Testing Dr Bronner's Castille Soap: How Well Does it Disinfect My House????

I had a great time testing out Dr Bronner's Castille Soap! While I did not see any claims to kill any percentage of bacteria by Dr Bronner's brand, I tested Dr Bronner's ability to disinfect because it was a view request! I test how well Dr Bronner disinfects by using sterile swabs and Petri dishes. Thanks for watching!

I love your testing videos! They are sooooo helpful! I have a VERY strange request/challenge for you though. I wonder if you can test the cleaning/disinfecting ability of certain OILS! There are three in particular that I have in mind and one maaaay surprise you: Can you test coconut oil, tea tree oil and lemon oil? You could do it in one video or separate ones, (whatever you feel is feasible or most effective). I’m not sure if you can test on your sink and toilet because it’s oil, but if you can PLEASE go for it!👍🏾 I’ve used coconut oil as a disinfectant on open wounds (mostly when I nursed my oldest) and it seemed to work really well, but I’m curious about what your findings would be.

I'm not a fan of Castile soap. Dr Bronners has lots of different oils that make up it's ingredients (6 or 7 if I remember correctly). My mother-in-law loves it and uses it without dilution, but unfortunately her shower gets blocked every few months and I have to rod it. We have hard water and I think it's reacting with the soap and leaving a residue of solidified oil down the pipe that's building up over time... it's a real pain. I'm hoping she'll heed my advice start diluting it significantly, as she's reluctant to give it up completely. Personally I can't recommend this brand or any other heavily oil based soap if you live in a hard water area.

Then, you’ll be able to know what type of product to test next without thinking “I have 200+ products to test, so I’ll get to that one in 4 years.” Idk, it’s just something I thought could be fun for your channel and viewers that at the end of your videos, we know what’s coming next. :)

As for my youtube viewers occasionally I will make a community post and let the viewers choose what video I edit that weekend. As for choosing products, I do what is mailed to my by viewers first, then I look at the list and see what has lots of requests, and what my home is ready for. Some tests take a month or more to complete. So for example, if I am in between bacteria testing, I will sneak in a soap scum video! Thanks for the suggestion!

@@FieldOfFocus I know you are probably already overwhelmed with all the suggestions you get, I have been experimenting with another natural cleaner and would love to see your tests on it. It is a homemade natural cleaner made with soap nuts. This is the recipe: 2 liters of water, 25-30 soap nuts boil down to 1 liter. If there are seeds inside, deseed them. Them squish the pulp to extract saponins. Strain. This can be used as an all purpose cleaner, hand wash, dish soap, body wash, floor cleaner, or can be used to do laundry. --dishsoap and hand wash: It can be used at full strength to wash the dishes or as hand wash. I would love to see its effectiveness, if it really does work well as good hand wash to remove bacteria. - all purpose cleaner: 25% soapberry extract and 75% water vs. full strength , I would be interested to see how it works on all the surfaces you normally do your testings on - for floor cleaner: 1,5 cups of soapnut water, 1 cup of vinegar, 1 big heaped teaspoon of pink Himalayan sea salt, 8 drops of tea tree essential oil, 8 drops of lavender oil. Mix together and dilute with water before using to clean the floor. 50-100 ml of the liquid for one bucket of water. - laundry: people seem to like using it as a natural laundry solution, there are two ways of using soap nuts for this purpose: one is to use 150-200 ml of Soapnut liquid (n the place provided for detergents) for about 6 kg of laundry. Another way is to take about 10-12 whole Soapnuts (can be deseeded or with seeds; this measurement is for 6-8 kgs of clothes) and put them in an old sock and tie the mouth of the socks tightly such that no soapnuts can escape. Then we throw in this sock along with the wash load (with the clothes, not in the place provided for detergents) and run the machine like we normally would . This maybe extremely time consuming, I just couldn’t stop myself from wondering about this after watching all of your videos and learning so much. Maybe that would also be interesting to you to see if homemade natural cleaners are any good at removing bacteria. Thank you again, your channel is one of my best finds on KZread. Have a beautiful day !

Hello! I have never had a front loader but I have heard horror stories about them. I do have two videos about cleaning my top loader HE “Fix a Stinky Washing Machine Using My Bissell Power Steamer!!” and “Clean Your Washing Machine Now!!!!!! Review of the Basket Clean Cycle.” I think if I were you, I would get a flashlight, get some wipes or a cloth and wipe the inside of the drum and see how much dirt/grime comes off. Look at the drain holes, are they clogged like mine where in the stinky washing machine video? Then wipe all around the gaskets, see if you can find the source of the moldy smell. Really get up into the folds and see if you can find the source. GOOD LUCK!!!

Add a cup of ammonia to every rinse, it takes out soap scum from your clothes. Your washer smell will be gone. You also can fill the washer without clothes and let it set over night then let it go through the cycle.

Didn't the website say to wait 10 minutes for the toilet, could that be why the toilet did so badly. I would think the Toilets would have the most germs, my kitchen counter and ect I wash a few times a day but my bathroom toilet I only do 3 times a week, could making the mixture a little stronger or letting it sit for the 10 work better for the toilet.

Hi there! Yes the website said wait 10 minutes and that is what I did for the toilet bowl. Sample, spray, wait ten minutes, scrub, flush, resample. I think the biggest thing to remember is that Dr Bronners is a cleaner, it is not a disinfectant or sanitizer. They do not have any claims that they remove bacteria. For my home, Dr Bronner's doesn't remove much bacteria from my toilet bowl. Would a less dilute solution work better? I am not sure, I haven't tested that yet.

thanks. Can you recommend some/a way to do these bacteria tests in our homes, places we frequent? Is there a way to DIY incubator or use a near by science lab? Then different sanitizers and disinfectants work differently on various surfaces and types of bacteria. the importance of adding essential oils is how and what you are cleaning. if you are cleaning and want more antimicrobial and anti bacterial clean you would want to add peppermint/ green tea essential oils and yuzu/ citrus oils... if you want to do something like laundry you would want to mix your essential oils with a floral essential oils... dr. bronners is best when mixed with essential oils but you need to learn how to use them... cause if you have hard water you should be using an apple cider vinegar mix with baking soda to rinse soap down afterwards.

Interesting. So when you say Dr Bronners is best when mixed with EO, how do you mean? I am absolutely willing to test out more EO in bacteria removal, just like I did for TJ's DIY cleaner video, but I need ratios or a recipe to make. Sounds like you know a lot about EOs, so perhaps you have a spray recipe you would share? I would like to test EO in a spray without soaps to see how well diluted EOs remove bacteria on their own. There are so many things to test out. I have a viewer suggestion list of about 250 now and would love to add some of those DIY EO cleaners. Oh and how do you use it in laundry? I'm a new sub, and only watched a few of your vids. My suggestion is that you might want to keep a running tally of your results with active ingredients broken out. Dr. Bronner's which I use for various things is really a Castille soap, with primarily: Organic Coconut Oil*, Organic Palm Oil*, Sodium Hydroxide**, Water, Organic Olive Oil*, Organic Hemp Oil, Organic Jojoba Oil, Sea Salt, Citric Acid, Tocopherol So old-school saponified soap with a little salt and citric acid and Lye. I know you had some good results with essential oils, however I am thinking in this case that would not be helpful here as the oils have been saponified. Would like to see you retest with the Tea Tree oil, however if you've already tested it which I think you did, I don't know if the dwell time is long enough to add anything spectacular. Its a great cleaner, just not much different than any basic soap. Just found the below site which can help find product ingredients. incidecoder.com/products/dr-bronners-pure-castile-bar-soap
