Testing a Turtle Wax Headlight Restoration Kit on a Lexus ES350 Xenon Headlight

In this video I will be testing out a Turtle Wax Headlight Lens Restorer kit that I picked up from my local target for about 8 dollars after tax.
You will see how to use the kit as well as the before and after results.
Overall it did not get the headlight looking brand new, but it certainly took years off of the look of the light and made it so that you can see the projector clearly again.
I would recommend this kit if you are in need of restoring the headlights on your vehicle.
EDIT:
As of today (10/24/2020) the kit is $7.19 (USD) at Target, regular price $8.99 www.target.com/p/turtle-wax-h...

    Brilliant video ! I tested it on my 15 yr old car with terrific result. I did however first start with sandpaper with grit 1000 to remove the worst scratches, after that I went for the pad #1 in the package and followed the rest of the instruction. Results are proportional to effort invested, I spent 45min on each headlight.

    I have used this exact kit from turtle wax before and the results is good. Per instructions, you supposed to clean dirt away from headlights and then try to get rid of the oxidation with the lens clarifying compound without using the sanding grits, if possible. I find this step kind of redundant because, if your headlights are so badly tarnished with oxidation, might as well hit it with the sanding grits from the beginning. Afterwards, then polish off with lens clarifying compound. Very important, do not open both packages of base coat and lens sealing wipes until you cleaned both headlights and ready to use them.

    It's because the oxidization that sheds initially (lots of dead clear) will clog the sanding pads quickly and make it so less complete correction is possible in the end result, as well as making the cut less consistent across the entire lens as the sanding surface loses effectiveness prematurely. Same principles with working to revive dead single-stage paint (compounding, but blowing out your pad frequently to maintain effectiveness).

  • @alegroman4294

    @alegroman4294

    I see your point, but if tarnish is so bad it’s going to clog up your sand paper regardless if you prep it or not. By wetting sandpaper constantly or rinsing with water, you can prevent the clogging you mentioned.

    I find that people tend to rush through this process too much. Even the cheap brand of headlight restorer will yield great results. I used this Turtle Wax brand. Was skeptical about it. Literally spent a good 30 mins on each light. Taking my time sanding and polishing. My headlights went from being completely hazed over to looking like I just bought the car new. I was amazed. Just have patience with the process.

TW should’ve included more base and sealing wipes instead of just that one pair. I would probably guess if you’re going to use the kit again, just use a quality sealant in place of the sealing wipes.

    Here is my experience of this product from the UK. I had my original faded headlamps sanded down by a mobile headlight restoration company 2 years ago. They were bad. I realised that the original coating would be lost. They guaranteed them for 1 year. Sure enough, after 1 year they started yellowing again. The car recently failed the MOT test as the headlamps were so bad. I bought this kit back in the summer, and planned to give it a try. Anyway, now in November with bad weather and a failed MOT, I was forced to give it a try. To my amazement, I used the cream only twice per headlight, with reasonable pressure and the headlights were back to like new. I was fully expecting to spend alot of time sanding. I could not apply the protective coating as it was forecast rain. I will do them again later and apply the protective coating. I really did not expect this result. I am very happy. I could see lots of yellow and black staining on the apllication cloth, so the cream was really taking off the contaminated layer on the lens.

    After restoring the headlights on my Saturn Ion I went over to Harbor Freight and picked up a $13 headlight restore drill attachment kit to knock out my other vehicles.

    I like the process taken to get the headlights like almost new, still it's a lot of work it's not that some of us car owner's are lazy to do this it's that we are constantly working is there a faster way to get them clear like glass?

    Thanks for your video. What is the shelf live of this product if unopened and left in the garage or in any other storage place. Can one box do for both headlights or I need to buy two sets?

    I had headlamps that looked as bad if not worse, I bought an average size orange.$1.50, cut it in half then sprinkled two tablespoons of bakingsoda onto it. Rubbing in a circular motion for approximately 5 minutes, rinse in warm water and mild soap. Dry, then apply wax, buff to a shine and all the discoloration and haze will be gone, and the wax will preserve this finish. Cost aproximately $4.00

    I just bought the kit. It tells you to try the cleaner first. If it works you don’t have to go any further. I didn’t have to work that hard and the headlights look new! No further steps needed! He didn’t follow most of the instructions. My were just starting to turn foggy. Get it done before it gets really bad. PS I didn’t remove the headlights.

    Damn I got screwed, this kit is between 11 and 12 bucks in Hawaii. Oahu, Hawaii is a crappy place to live and can't wait to leave. Thanks for posting this video, I was to lazy to read the directions and so far the lights are starting to look good. I am finished and my lights look great!

    Get one of the kits with a drill attachment. With a drill, it only takes a minute with each step of sanding/buffing and results are better.

  • @antoniogarcia
    @antoniogarcia4 жыл бұрын

    The kit is fine, but the quantities of the kit are very unbalanced, the sandpaper is barely enough for the two headlights, the lubricant is unnecessary, we can replace it with water, the clarifying compound gives to make about 10 headlights and we only have sealant wipes for a use. For slightly damaged headlights is fine, but for headlights with slightly greater damage, I would not use this kit.

    i agree.... i used this kit and was not happy with the results because it still was not completely clear. instead i bought some 800, 3000 and 5000 grit wet and dry and went to town. it got all of the yellow out and i used the polish that came with the kit and they look almost new now. they need to give you more sandpaper because finer grits seem to loose their abrasion quite quickly. i wanted them to be almost perfect because the yellowing was making the bulbs seem more yellow than they are. i bought some good ultra white bulbs, but that means nothing if the headlights have oxidation / yellowing on them. they now look very white so i am finally happy :)

    True...I bought the kit but my lights were too bad. So I ended up with the sandpaper and water. I still used the compound and the wipes from the kit. Job done with quite good results.

    it is a pretty cheap kit, you do get what you pay for. I've used this kit and doesn't seem to last too long, i think it great for headlights with light haze.

  • @antoniogarcia

    @@v1martini481 , It is not cheap if we consider that we can only restore the headlights of a single car. I am dedicated to restoring headlights and with a liquid polymer kit, wie hardly costs $ 30 and $ 10 more in sandpaper, I restore the headlights of 30 cars. Also obtaining infinitely better and much more durable results over time. Below I leave you a photograph of one of my works, made 22 months ago and the headlights are still the same as the first day ibb.co/N7B3P42
