TESTING A $12 KNIFE SHARPENING STONE FROM AMAZON. Knife sharpening doesn't have to be expensive.

Ойын-сауық

What is the best beginning knife sharpening stone to buy? There are a lot of questions you need to ask yourself when looking at sharpening stones. In this video I go over some of those question and some things to consider when looking at sharpening supplies.
I also test a $12 sharpening stone bought from amazon. This would make a good stone for a beginner looking to practice the basics of knife sharpening. I wouldn't recommend going out and buying a lot of expensive sharpening supplies, as you may end up deciding its not for you. Cheap sharpening gear is a much better place to start as you will not wast any money even if you decide to later on buy the more expensive whetstones.
I would recommend a sharpening stone with dual grits like this combination stone. It will give you more options at almost no additional cost. I also ALWAYS recommend a strop. You can either buy one like the Knives Plus Strop Block, or DIY a strop from an old leather belt.
Knife sharpening doesn't have to be expensive. 😀
The knife used in this video is a spyderco sage 1 in s30v steel
I bought everything in this video with my own money and make no money if you purchase any of these knife sharpening items.
I am not an "expert" and this is just my opinion. Your milage may vary.

Your videos have been immensely helpful to me. Right now I'm working with a sub $10 system. It consists of a sharpening stone from the dollar store, a $7 5-pc. buffing compound kit from Lowe's (even though I'm only using 2 compounds right now), a sharpie (which I had laying around), and cardboard from a pizza box. I've been practicing for a while now, but I just sharpened a knife in a way that's comparable to, but not as refined as, the sharpest knife that I own and have ever used. Your advice and tips have been key components in helping me with getting my knives sharper and more consistent. Using the buffing compound is particularly helpful. Thanks for the great content that you've been creating!

Wow sounds like a pretty good setup for under $10. It really is amazing what you can do on very cheap equipment. Although I try to avoid cardboard for stropping at all cost haha. No reason I just dont like it 😉 Buffing compound is the secret sauce. Once you find a system that works its all down hill. Thanks for watching I really do appreciate it!

I never really knew what stroping was until watching your videos. Growing up my mom's boyfriend had this old antique barber chair, it was really cool. Well it had these two foot long leather belts hanging off the side, about four or five, all difrent looking, I would always ask what they were, and he would tell me they were for sharpening the straight razors, as a kid I just he was pulling my chain. Lol

Nice videos! Solid information and strong production. There are good sharpeners out there who just turn on the camera and talk for a half-hour or more. They interrupt themselves, rephrase things, they walk out of frame to get some tool, and you're going a little nuts because honestly you're allowed to edit and make it good. Also thanks for the permission to try out the cheap stones. Amazon is awash with them and it looks like the only difference is the branding.

I would like to add something to my previous statement (i wrote a "Divine Comedy")... This is the first time i visit this channel, and I DO AGREE with everything this guy say; i think he is 100% right (for this reason I also subscribed to the channel); however... ...Based on my own experience (while "TRY to teach" other people about sharpening), i have more than a reason to believe that "FOR A NOVICE" it is easier to achieve better results with a "LESS AGGRESSIVE GRIT" (in most cases anyway). The technique he show with the "12 dollars stone + strop" "is just fine"; and "this is the problem"... ...There are MANY "little tricks that a novice does NOT know" or "is just unable to properly apply" (tricks that "The Man in the video is using Big Time" - i can easily see it -). A "novice skill/sensibility" is (USUALLY) "less than acceptable"; a novice DO MISTAKES (i did... A lot... Everyone did at start...). I have seen that "an higher grit" (1000 is the "Gold Standard") give to the user "the time to figure out that HE IS DOING SOMETHING WRONG", - limiting the amount of damage that occur to the blade in the process-. With the 1000/6000 combination is easier to "SOMEONE THAT HAVE NO CLUE" to achieve "good results" than using "a lower grit and a strop" - or "lower grit only" - (at least, this is what i witnesses with "most people" during the years... ..."Fine results while you are watching over them but A DISASTER when they try to replicate the process after a while alone..."). Also... I have to admit that "the 12 dollar stone" LOOK "TOO POROUS" to me (i can be wrong, i haven't used it; the video can be deceiving). I don't like "POROUS STONES", because those WEAR OUT "REALLY FAST" and "EAT TO MUCH MATERIAL while doing it" (it is the exact opposite of "a novice needs"). A "more dense and higher grit" stone is "more forgiving", better suited for "learning"... Just my 50 cents... P.S. there is also another reason behind my choice: it is "fairly easy" to find "aggressive materials around you" that can be used to "EASILY GRIND a blade" (like "condominium stairs", "the balcony edge", a "clay pot vase", "the back of a ceramic plate, or coffee cup"... "Ultra Fine materials" are commonly found too; for example "a bathroom sink" (usually made of ceramic) is probably "20'000+ grit"... ...But "it is harder to replicate a "GOOD, CONSISTENT, MEDIUM FINE GRIT, surface" (most commonly required, for most of the "every days tasks"). Again... "My personal opinion"; i can be wrong OFC

Hi. Thanks for your advice. I bought a cheap wet stone 400/1000 grit on amazon. I have three kitchen knives that I sharpen on the stone. After sharpening, I pull the edge of my blade through a bamboo cutting board because I haven't bought or made a strop yet. The knives work fine for my kitchen tasks which are mostly cutting veggies. For my purpose, this level of involvement ie utilitarian is enough. Not even a hobby, yet.

Thank you very, very much for your wonderful and informative video with practical application on sharpening knives with inexpensive stones. I would like to know, what inexpensive tools you would recommend to sharpen pruning scissors. I grow a lot of citrus plants/trees & prune a lot of them with the typical Fiskars pruning scissors. One of them has a really worn out blade because someone borrowed it, used it to cut wires and other things. I don't want to buy anything expensive as far as files or stones are concerned. Would you recommend something I can buy in local stores? Once again, great video! A big thank you!

I'm a professional knife sharpener and I have started with 4 Taidea stones. Not the best quality, you could say cheap stones. I was not sure in the beginning if I would stay passionate about sharpening so I started with low cost stones. Now I have the naniwas and mcustas... but you can sharpen basically on anything.. good video

Your content has gotten good. I subscribed not too long ago, but I just realized today I hated on one of your older videos about not buying a Japanese whetstone. Has your sharpening technique improved since then? The only reason I hated on that old video was because the knife didn't really seem that sharp. Haha.

Haha! Thanks for the sub👍 I haven't really gotten any better at sharpening since then, just better at filming. It can be hard to relay what is sharp, comparatively speaking through video. To some, simply shaving arm hair is considered sharp. To others, its not. Thanks for the comment😀

Excellent videos mate, very informative and easy to follow..I wonder could you do a video on how to sharpen a 5 and a quarter inch Dexter Russel sheep sknning knife, or, the 5 inch Victorinox of the same type. These knives are upswept slightly for skinning, and are hard to get the tip done. What stone to use to get a working edge for the job at a reasonable price...Thanks mate..John

Yes I've seen some of his vids. They are very nice indeed. Takes all the guess work out of it and very consistent. Id love to have one to play with haha. The price is crazy though. I don't think I could ever bring myself to spend that much unless I was doing it professionally.

Hi there, looking for a budget stone. I’ve got a bubba blade and have been filleting redfish with it. It’s starting to get dull after 50/60 fish, and advice on what grit or stone I should get to sharpen it every few months when it dulls again

  • @eamonnteh

This was coincidentally my first proper water stone, I got it from my local supermarket been using to learn honing knifes for years. Sucked at it. But thanks to you, I've got a breakthrough. At the very least with this 1000 grit version, I could shave some hair now xD only a few strands tho with some pressure - far cry from the edges you achieve with strops (which I don't/can't do) hahaha. Glad you mentioned the straight razor part ... folks forget that you want those super fine ... I do Customer razors all the way to 12,000 grit and strop then down to .5 micron

OUTDOORS55 a lot of folks don’t know about the difference between that edge and the edges you want in a knife... currently if you buy a straight razor at any art of shaving in San Diego you get one of my business cards for sharpening...

You are a grandmaster man. I spend hours on a blade and have never gotten one that sharp lol. This is an old vid so maybe there is one that is what I have in mind... but maybe a video on what you think many people are doing wrong.. and how to correct it. Also.. when you talk pressure.. if you could equate it with something.. I heard someone use a phrase like.. the "pressure of clicking a mouse" the other day. Infinitely more useful than "light to moderate". If I keep watching maybe I will finally get decent at this lol.
