TESTED: Vauxhall Grandland Plug-in Hybrid-E. The perfect electric compromise?

Remember the old Vauxhall Grandland X? No, nor do we. The good news is that Vauxhall is fighting back a new range of electrified models with far more style than their predecessors. The new Grandland has lost its X and now comes with the same super-svelte schnozz as the Mokka. It's also CHEAPER than the outgoing car (yes, you read that right).
The Hybrid-e carries over the old Grandland X's plug-in hybrid powertrain lock stock and barrel, which consists of a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine that's supplemented by an electric motor, which in turn is powered by a 13.2kWh battery. Total power is 222bhp while the all-electric range is a claimed 39 miles, while a punchier four-wheel-drive Grandland Hybrid-e with just under 300bhp will be arriving later this year.
Join Tom as he puts the new Grandland through its paces in the UK. If you're not ready to go fully electric yet, could Vauxhall's family-friendly five-seater be the car for you?

Does it have a manual hand brake or an electronic one? Also I suspect that a spacer spare wheel cannot be fitted under the boot floor-cover ?

I have mixed views on PHEVS...but in the absence of directly comparable BEV seemingly for two or three years, a dual test duel between an Alfa Romeo Tonale and BMW 2 series Tourer looks like an interesting test for the Electrifying team to compete over, when the plugin versions become available. As a footnote...load space dimensions (including with the seats down are of significance , so having a tape measure available is of more interest than sitting in the boot (perhaps less amusing though !) Our current 2 series has the back seats flat most of the time for big plants and associated construction materials, so is a prime requirement.

Looking for a hybrid SUV, this looks like a reasonable choice.I would use it on e=pure electric except for the occasional long journey.

Interesting review, as more EVs and charging stations are available, it is strange to see carmakers offering hybrid models with such a small battery. Thank you for sharing! 🔌⚡🚘

PHEVs work for some, for example if you have to mostly commute shorter distances and occasionally drive somewhere further away which isn't well served by charging infrastructure. However, with charging infrastructure massively improving all the time, any of their advantages are rapidly being eaten away. And if you want a Stellantis PHEV, get the 3008!

For BIK if it is over 40 miles range the tax goes down to 8%...seems weird how quite a few hybrid come in at 39 mile range which makes BIK jump to 12%... This is what drove me to electric at 2% BIK 😌

Stellantis needs to put plug in hybrid in their vans, for example zafira life to give choice for big family not ready for electric - little range and diesel - not suited for city. For me the shortest version - 4,6 m and middle - 5 m with 8 seats could do.

They are great! Very useful for people with a house where they can charge it and that do small commutes but that sometimes need to go on long trips like for vacations. Unfortunately, that's not me. They are also great for people like me who do long freeway trips at high speeds if the plug in hybrid is a diesel plug in hybrid which this is ... NOT. So, they are useless for me.

PHEVs might make sense for some business users because of the low bik rates, but it's hard to see how they could make sense for a typical private motorist.

Yes, the Government seems to be pushing company car drivers towards PHEVs through the BIK tax system - sadly, though, to the likely detriment of the environment... Your average 750 mile-a-week rep hasn't the time nor inclination to plug their PHEV in and, even if they did, the daily mileage they cover simply means the car is lugging around a heavy lump of (discharged) battery for too much of the time to be efficient. Over 750 miles per week (150 daily miles), even being charged up every night, the very popular BMW 330e company car uses more fuel and emits more CO2 than the company's 320d model over the same mileage. Just as how the push towards diesel company cars back in the 90s has come back to bite the Government in the a**e re the environment, so will PHEVs prove to be more harmful in the long run.

Other thing is once the battery runs out they're very uneconomical on fuel on account of it being a petrol car lugging heavy batteries about the place plus with a crap infrastructure especially here in Northern Ireland where I live it'd be a definite no.

If I'm honest I understand them but think that plug in hybrids are pointless especially if like me you do a lot of motorway driving and its for that reason why I'll neither be going petrol or electric but sticking with diesel.

I ordered the U,it ate version of the standard 1.2l 3 cyl petrol, which when your test version came out was called ‘Elite’. Ordered in Sept 21. Vauxhall’s delivery to dealer is showing Feb March 23 now, with the Hybrids showing April-June 23. There have been some spec changes since your test as well, so some of the little Foybles you mention may have been addressed. The line up went from 12 versions originally to 9, if you include the engine differences within each trim level. Vauxhall changed the line up without informing those of us with pre orders, which would have been nice as they also upped the prices. There isn’t 1 dealership in the country that has a model for test drive either, which is frustrating. Likewise, the tv adverts are quoting 6 weeks for delivery from order date! I’m just hoping the Grandland lives up to expectation when it does finally arrive. I’ve got to get a wheelchair in the back as well. Swapping from a Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, which was adequate in load space. I won’t be sorry to see the back of the gearbox on that one though, as the gear change was like fighting with a mk1 Shogun manual. Anyway, thx for the review; you may need to revisit once the ‘23’ model as it will be, is released

I'm looking for a new car and mystified why all these car reviewers are obsessed with the 0 to 60mph performance. There are very few roads where you would actually do that, it's pointless.

People think that they need to able to drive 400 miles with out stopping. Your car might 400 do mile your bladder won't and the DoT recommends you take a test brake every 2 hours. Go straight to electric.
