I’ve been using the Pinion gearbox version on a priority 600 bicycle with a 500W front hub motor for 2 years now. Only cleaned the bike twice and not even changed the oil. Zero maintenance and the gears are perfect. The belt is still in great condition. Pinion gearboxes are seamless. If this MGU is half as good as the gearbox I’m using, I’m all in. Would never go back to chains and cassettes again.

I'm in the process of doing something similar, with the priority Apollo and a front hub (will be buying the bike soon and am looking at hubs). What is the top speed that you get on your 600? Any worries about the front fork spinning out? I'm wondering between the 600 and the Apollo which would be the best option for a 20 mile each way daily commute. Any response would be greatly appreciated haha. Cheers!

One more question: how come you decided to go with a front hub instead of the more traditional rear hub? At least with the Apollo, it has the igh so you can't do that, but with the pinion gearbox you now have that option.

Are the pedals directly connected to the chainring or does your pedal power go into the gearbox and then back out through the gearbox? What happens when you're out and the battery goes flat? Whatever gear you happened to be in, you're now stuck in? The removable chainstay required for a gates belt drive is not as strong as a normal chainstay.

Tried all the ones at the show. My opinion (based on flat busy test track) is the Bulls single pivot low speed version feels comfy I like this suspension. The full speed 45 KPH flyer is a real contender for my next bike, shame it costs 10K. The reason I like it as opposed to the weight conscious Bosch SX 120 RPM cadence is the pinion 900 Watt has a low Candance to reach and maintain the 45 kph speed. When I can get my hands on the flyer back at their base I will try it on steep climbs. Also note that Bulls have a high speed version as well and is 2k cheaper. 2024 delivery. I congratulate you Rob On realizing the obvious which seems to gone over the heads of the EMBN crowd that this system to going to be a Massive game changer for the Mass mobility market.

Already has the CAD design completed, expects to receive a motor from Pinion in about 2 months to build a prototype which has also been funded. Lucky you testing this bike almost alone without other bikers around you. And lucky me at last finding someone trying out the new system and answering all my questions (about the feeling, the noise from the engine and shifting the gearbox and about the drag over the cutting-off speed). Many rewievs I saw but nobody yet did s t f u to make it possible to listen to the noises coming out of the MGU. Thanks a lot! 🙌 One thing I really like about the MGU is that shifting is no longer independent from the engine. Since it's one unit it seems to work very well together. No more tricks as pulling the brake lever to interrupt the engine for smooth gear changes necessary 🤗

Rob, Among the ebike channels on You Tube. Your channel is the one that I trust the most. I also read and review other channels and articles. But it was your outstanding reviews of various ebike motors that influenced me which ebike motor I selected to power my custom built Retrotec gravel ebike.. I chose the Bosch Performance Speed. But, even if you are skeptical, this Pinion ebike motor is a paradigm shift in ebike motor technology, ebike design and philosophy. Pinion reinvented the heart of the ebike. Before, Pinion's ebike motor, ALL ebikes have their motor and drivetrain separate. In fact one could argue that the gearing drivetrain is an antiquated system trying its best to adapt to the ebike motor's capabilities. With Pinion, the ebike motor and gearing are now unified. That is like discovering the holy grail of ebike motor design. Pinion's new ebike motor , made ALL previous motors old, antiquated and second tier. I have been cycling since 1974, and has grown jaded to all the hype of cycling component makers. But, however you package it, Pinion's ebike motor is no hype. This is a truly revolutionary product, and a true game changer. I think, the only biggest hurdle for its domination of the ebike motor market, is its price. I could not wait for your intensive testing and review of this ebike motor. Thanks!!

This is some awesome tech, game changing even! I'd like to comment specifically on the belt: I have a Pinion Gearbox on my hardtail MTB with a Gates Carbon belt. I also have a single speed MTB with a Gates belt, and they have both been great. The belts last about 3 times as long as a chain. They are built to automotive standards. However, the fibers are arranged to be strong lengthwise, not necessarily widthwise. So when handling the belts, you need to be somewhat careful with them. Folding them, prying them into place, twisting them while in place, or banging them into rocks can potentially damage or weaken them. Also, in dryer climates they do start to squeak a bit and need to be sprayed with silicone lubricant after about every 50 miles or so. Pouring water on it stops it for a few miles, but the silicone spray really helps. You do not need to clean the belt before spraying it, a dusting of material along with the spray seems to be helpful out here in the desert. Take care of your belt and it will take care of you!

I've ridden a pinion gearbox hardtail about 4,000 mi over the last year, and with the manual shifter it has the same clunk between 4-5 and 8-9 as with this combined unit. I was hopeful for this technology update before I would buy an ebike (I'm 66 with one new knee and a second coming). My biggest complaint was the manual shift grip shifter. Re the belt, a spare is so light and easy to take along. They are pretty bulletproof as long as you keep the tension correct (there is an app for your phone that can tell when you twang the belt if the tension is good or not), and with the auto tensioner this bike has, I assume due to the rear suspension, you don't have to worry about it. I ride dusty roads alot and you do get a bit of a squeaking sound when the belt gets dusty. A squirt of water on the belt and the squeak goes away. Now I just have to muster the money and get over the shock of these expensive e-bikes... Thanks for the great review and bringing to our attention.

Seems like it's a 3x4 box. Like a Rohloff hub, some gears are louder than others. This makes sense on an EMTB becauses the losses you get from belt drive and gearbox don't really matter - until you go above the limit of course! Definitely a technology to watch.

ABOUT TIME!!! I don't understand why this hasn't come about sooner. Yamaha and other motorcycle manufacturers have been building integrated motor and gearbox units far longer than the 65 years I've been around, electronics should actually make that easier. As a retired machined parts inspector for Boeing my Dream bike is a Pole Voima with the Pinion drive!

Bought an Autobike 30 years ago. It uses three weights on the rear spokes. As centrifugal forces build with increased speed it moves the derailleur up the gear set, and then down again at lower wheel speeds. It works very well even after all this time with no real added weight and no electronics, and cost roughly 1/30th of this.

7:28 I wonder if some of the draggy feeling is the loss of efficiency inherent in belt drive. Having electric assist to overcome those losses, dropping the fragile derailleur and leaving behind an oily, slappy chain is worth it to me. Oh, and getting intelligent gear shifting even at standstill and moving all the weight to the middle of the bike. Sign me up (assuming I win the lottery).

I'm glad it seems like you can shift under load while pedaling. that was one of the main factors about the pinion gearboxes that i did NOT like for the longest time. you had to stop pedaling to shift gears and when youre on a tight and steep switchback, that really kills your momentum, hell, it even sometimes kills it on traditional derailleur and chain type drivetrains when they sometimes skip under heavy load

  • @Firepath

This is exactly what I was hoping for a year ago. Exactly, not almost, but exactly. Integrated Pinion gearbox with an electric motor, and use a belt drive. The weight off of the rear wheel, the lack of fragile derailleur, the low maintenance belt and gearbox, the possibility of automatic shifting. Top stuff! I also agree with some others that in my opinion (pun intended?) in 5 years this will be the default setup for the top e-mtbs.

Would be interesting to get a suspension guru on to explain the anti dive anti squat etc advantages of having a single chain pathway regardless of the gear you are in. I’d think you could seriously enhance the rear suspension kinematics with this unit. Although I agree that spring hanging down needs a serious bash guard!!

5:16 It's not a version one.11 years ago they announced E1.8 pinion drive system to be released the following year in 2013 with Nicolai Ion20 Mountain E-Climber. Then it didn't happen and they stayed eerily silent ever since. Something must've stopped them then and they worked on improving it I guess. So it's safe to say it has been in development for over 12 years at least.

Kidneys already up for sale to fund a Simplon, when they release it onto the market. Liked the Rotwild set up too, apart from their adoption of chain and chain ring as opposed to belt drive; seems counterintuitive to me to add consumables to the drive chain when the idea of the Pinion system, from the start, is to be “maintenance free”. Great review; watched it three times now, as well as hitting the Subscribe button.

I''ve been looking forward to this type of thing coming out, especially with the electronic shifter. I seriously doubt I can afford this in a bike any time soon, but this is still great. I love that they've put a belt drive on it as well. My biggest worry is what happens if the electronics die in the highest gear - are you stuck in 12th until you get to a mechanic or will it automatically end up in 4th? If that happens on a trial, I'd much rather it be stuck in 4th than 12th.

Nice of course! 🤙 However, I'm still waiting for that light-weight 7-spd IGH e-shifter by Kindernay VII. Sure, don't want the unsprung mass increase, but can be easily paired with any motor for flexibility and decrease motor complexity if something goes wrong. Plus, for the lighter Emtb class, can still get the streamlined motor mount and downtube. The new future battle e-IGH v. geared e-motor? A good one sure!

Alright! I agree it’s the future. I looked at a gravel bike years ago that used the pinion and was blown away. It just makes sense to goto this as long as it improves the industry. The manufacturers are so vested in their products that it will take MTBRS switching over in a big way for them to conform. It reminds me of Teslas and how they have started the manufacturers to have to start producing their own lines of electric cars. I’ll switch when it becomes feasible for sure.

Do the sprinting gear changes next to a derailleur shifting ebike and see which one you hear most, that is if the derailleur bike doesn't snap its chain.

I know you were mostly reviewing the motor and gearbox. Still I was wondering in its current iteration how solid is the bike frame? Are the brakes hydraulic? How well does the bike handle spills? Over time will the mud and dirt scratch up the chain stay? How does it perform on he downhill? In the rain? What does the entire bike weigh?
