I tried free squats today for the first time in 27 years. I'm 47 now and have been working out for a couple of months now. Doing well, my back is very strong and my legs are ok, I can do 3 plates on the squat machine comfortably. Walked up to the squat rack, loaded one plate, did 10 reps, it was alright. did two more rounds then added a 25......I almost couldn't push it up when I squatted down and got light-headed lol!!!!! Free weight is another animal, but I'm going to start incorporating it and help condition my muscles for this. All I'm trying to say is that this shit is WAY harder than it looks and this man is a monster. Larry: The guy I grew up with had an unbelievable grip that Tommy Kono learned after he had his gym on Maui in the mid-1960s - Tommy had weightlifting and strength demonstrations and in one of them at the Kahului Shopping Center, Tommy bent a railroad spike which Frank straightened out and gave it back to Tommy! Frank Jacintho could tear 3 US quarters at once into 6 pieces, tear apart a US quarter into 3 pieces with the middle piece falling to the ground, etc. Frank was featured tearing a US quarter into two, quarter after quarter, on a late September 1982 episode of ABC's "That's Incredible". Frank was able to tighten and loosen lug nuts on trucks, carry a whole cane hauler wheel into the shop for repair ... instead of using the fork life (!), etc.

@Joel-McConnell Good job, sir. Very respectable scores. Age is not necessarily a huge determining factor, at least from what I have researched, in holding anyone back from being super strong for grip. Odd Haugen is a great example. He holds several World records to this day, competing with 20 year olds and still lifting more (usually on the Rolling thunder or similar). He is well into his 70s. Now don't get me wrong, if there are underlying health issues then grip strength can start diminishing. You are only 58! That is not old by today's standards. Also, the strongest grip in the world in my opinion is Carl Myerscough and he is nearly 50. Use it or lose it. You have heard this many times. Go out and buy some inexpensive grippers and other grip equipment and I guarantee that your dyno scores will go back up, if you care. But please don't use age as an excuse. 😊

@@degradated I get that but they train their grip purposefully, they are also outlirers for their ages. My grip was naturally gained over 30+ years of construction which I no longer do so my grip demises each and every year. I do have one of those high end Iron 80 grippers and can close the highest setting(I forget it's poundage?) but it is getting harder to do. I am not interested in wasting what time I have left on this planet training my grip, other things to be done with that time and limited energy before it is all gone along with my grip anyway. I use my gripper when I am watching armwrestling events and that is about the extent of my training to try and maintain what I have left, it does help to maintain it some but again other more import things to be worried about. Even my dynometer just sits in it's case collecting dust, rarely pull it out. I got it to check on my demises over time as I age like once per year......regards.

Just had the chance to try this for the first time ever, and I think it was the same machine as well! The one I used only seemed to be adjusted 1 notch wider -- not 100% sure. I managed to hit 75-76 kg, and I think on a good day I could possibly break 80 kg. Honestly, I think my grip is pretty solid, so I am quite impressed by everyone who hit 80+ on that thing. Some of those guys were like a 100 pounds lighter than me. Larry definitely attracted a strong crowd. Many of my friends who are physically active were around the 45-55 kg mark, which I believe to be around average for a healthy 25-40 year old man. EDIT: My friend adjusted the handle and I tried it again. Scored 82 kilograms.

120kgs is a serious pull! I train grip specifically (have taken it very seriously) and see myself as somewhat of an outlier (hehe) and the best I've ever put out was 124kgs (so far 130kgs this year hopefully!). Anything over 90kgs is an extremely good pull likely 1 in 500+ people when tested in a randomized sample of men. You can never guess what a person's grip is by just looking at someone and that's the beauty of grip sport! Many people have trained their grips without knowing it whether they have broken loose lug nuts at their dads mechanic shop when they were younger or they work with their hands in their day to day job. Truly, 80kgs is a very strong pull. People who begin their grip training journey usually see the numbers rise quickly which is what makes grip so cool. More to say! Awesome video. Larry your a beast have been watching you for years. Thanks for the years of entertainment in strength sports.

@@Ryan-wx1biHello. I am not known as a liar. I can show you scans of my two metacarpal broken in the right hand several months prior. My right hand was always about 1.5x stronger than left. The reason the results were so close between my two hands is because I was still in the recovery phase during the filming. A few months later, after plenty of training, I am at nearly 100kg now and back to full stength. 96.6kg is my highest peak performance that I have a photo of. I'd be happy to do a 90+kg pull on video if anyone wants to challenge me. Already did a CoC 2.5 close on my channel but people still criticize. Anyhow, I responded to most of your comments and challenges by immediately posting a 2.5 CoC close on my channel if you care to look. My right hand had been approximately 1.5x stronger than my left at my peak before the break, which explains similar figures during the healing phase. I am now hitting 98.35kg on my hand dynamometer with right and 93.75kg with left (with low testosterone), after a few months of training both hands. Those figures will improve when I get testosterone therapy, hopefully soon.

The ratings that COC give their grippers aren't related at all to numbers being squeezed on a dyno. COC 3 is rated at 280lbs by the company, but closing one doesn't require you to be ANYWHERE near 280 on a dyno. Not sure at all how they rate their grippers, but COC 3s are actually around 150lbs of resistance to close
